Charles Dickens' Classic Novel in a New Light

A Christmas Carol is a classic tale written by Charles Dickens. I am sure most of you know the story about the bitter and miserly old moneylender Ebenezer Scrooge, who is being visited by three ghosts that show him his fate.

In 2009 Disney released an animated remake of this great story. Although there are hundreds of remakes out there already, Disney managed to bring to life a fairy tale which children of all ages can enjoy. The spirit of this story was captured perfectly and the animated 3D effects are the icing on the cake. If you did not see this movie yet I suggest you give it a try, it is the perfect story for a perfect Christmas.

What "A Christmas Carol" is About

A christmas carolEbenezer Scrooge is a wealthy but miserable old man who works in his counting house with his clerk, Bob Cratchit. On Christmas Eve Scrooge receives several visitors. One is his nephew, Fred, who invites Scrooge to dine with him for Christmas. He refuses. He is forcing his underpaid employee to beg to take the day off for his own family.

After he returns home, he is visited by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who died on Christmas Eve seven years before. His visitor, who is weighed down by a massive chain, made up of cash boxes, keys and padlocks, warns him that unless he changes, he too will have to wear a chain, even bigger than Marley's.

On this night, he is visited by three more spirits, the ghost of Christmas past, the ghost of Christmas present and the ghost of Christmas future, who show him visions of his life in the hopes that Scrooge will change. Scrooge awakens on Christmas Day to find that all three spirits have visited him in a dream over the course of one night. The story concludes with Scrooge living the rest of his life as a second father to Tiny Tim, and as a changed man who embodies the spirit of Christmas.

Why is It Worth Watching

A christmas carol

Disney's "A Christmas Carol" is a stunning 3D animation. They made a great 3D movie that fits perfectly in our time while still being loyal to the original story. I have to admit, Charles Dickens' original story is timeless and will probably always be a tale that parents read to their children for Christmas, but every story becomes a little out of date by the tame it turns a hundred years old. Still, Robert Zemeckis did a great job bringing the this story back to life without changing the original tale.

As soon as I and my family watched the movie, we knew watching it would become one of our traditions. And it did. Every year at Christmas time this movie is playing in the background while we decorate the Christmas tree. It replaced all of our other Christmas movies.

And it's not hard to understand why. This story tells us a message of peace and goodness. It tells us that no man is an island for himself and that we all are connected.

Christmas has become a materialistic holiday, and while presents are great, they became the reason many people celebrate it. This movie reminds us what Christmas and life itself is all about.

That is the reason why this movie is so great. Well, that and the stunning and detailed animations.

The Soundtrack to the Movie

Of course they also released the soundtrack to the movie, they always do. The songs you can find here reflect the same Christmas cheer as the movie. I hope you enjoy Christmas songs as much as I do, I especially like "God Bless Us Everyone" by Andrea Bocelli.

Tell Us Your Opinion

In my opinion, this movie is great, but I'm sure there are people who don't think so.
Do you think they ruined this original tale or made it better? And why do you think this way?

Do you like Disney's interpretation of A Christmas Carol?

cffutah says:

unfortunately I did get bored of it, its hard to keep watching this same ole show, I'm sure I sound like a scrooge right now, sorry.

anusk1313 says:

Yes i love it ... last time I saw it was last Christmas

humboldt84 says:

I think they did a great job! Disney is always a winner. But I am still a fan of the Alastair Sim movie!

No, it would be better if they never released this movie!

Cercis says:

This is a great lens...but I am on the fence as to how to answer this question. I haven't seen the movie, but I wonder how it's possible to take the universal Dickensonian theme and prune it down so simply that young children "enjoy" it. I really don't think Dickens "A Christmas Carol" was meant to be enjoyed.

petraskarja says:

I think that is not really nice movie for children. Not at all! In this movie they want to show all the children that rich people are bad people but that is not true and ti is not right to programe our children with that kind of thinking.
