Everyone has a Favorite Version of A Christmas Carol

Everyone has their favorite version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", the wonderful story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, the man who transforms from a grouchy miser to a generous man who "knew how to keep Christmas well".  Your favorite version of the movie may depend on many things, for me it is based on family tradition.  I have quite a few on this lens, and hope you'll let me know if I'm missing any.

Each and every year we have made it a point of watching the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim playing the role of Scrooge.  Personally, as good as many of the other versions are, and we'll look at as many as we can, none matches this one.  Maybe it is due to tradition, maybe it is because the movie was made and introduced the same year that I was born which was only 2 days after Christmas in 1951.

Another thing that I notice about this adaption of the movie is the reference by "the ghost of Christmas Present" to this being the time of year when we celebrate Christ's birth...and the reminder by him that some celebrate this not just one day of the year, but all days of the year

Lets take a look at the influence this single story has had on movies, cartoons, television shows, and look ahead to a wonderful Christmas, trying to watch as many Christmas movies that have a good message behind them as we can.

A Lesson in Family Restoration and Forgiveness

I have never watched this scene of the movie without getting a lump in my throat or a tear in my eyes. It is one of the last scenes in the movie, when Ebeneezer finally makes things right with his the nephew many years after his (Ebeneezer Scrooge's) sister died while giving his nephew life, just as Ebeneezer's mother had died during his own birth. There are so many life lessons in this movie, this one of forgiveness and restoration is so beautiful.

Scrooge's Redemption

The scene that, for me, is at the heart of the movie, A Christmas Carol. This is the best version -- we all know that.

A Christmas Carol, Alistair Sim, 1951 DVD

You will find both the black and white and colorized version of the movie on this DVD, I enjoy both...but when really in a sentimental mood, black and white wins every time. This is also available in Blu-Ray, click through and search for the movie if you prefer Blu-Ray.

A Lesson in Good Business Practice

After many years of giving his employee, Bob Cratchett, a meager salary and uncomfortable working conditions, Scrooge makes things right in this delightful scene from the end of the movie. Oh that all bosses that are struggling in business today could see that by giving, you receive. And that all employees could be like Bob Cratchett, willing to work and honor their bosses even if they don't always deserve it. Because Bob was able to hang in there, he was able to be part of this wonderful transformation in his boss, Ebeneezer Scrooge.

This scene makes me think of sitting with my father watching the movie. He was rather a stern man himself, secretly I would wish that he, too, could be transformed when I was a little girl, and I loved this part of the movie, because even my father laughed at it...I can hear him now...though he has been gone for years.

A Christmas Carol's Historical Context

This is a description of the movie from Wikipedia of the story by Charles Dickens, a place where anyone can write about anything from their perspective...a lot of great historical information about the conditions in England at the time of the writing, and the life of the author, Charles Dickens. A writer's experience often affects his writing.

A Christmas Carol (sub-titled "In Prose. Being A Ghost Story of Christmas")The first edition title page in its entirety reads: A CHRISTMAS CAROL / IN PROSE. / Being / A Ghost Story of Christmas. / BY / CHARLES DICKENS / WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY JOHN LEECH. / LONDON / CHAPMAN & HALL, 186, STRAND. / MDCCCXLIII. is a novella by English author Charles Dickens, about a miserly, cold-hearted curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge and his holiday conversion and redemption after being visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve. The book was first published on 19 December 1843 with illustrations by John Leech, and quickly met with commercial success and critical acclaim. The tale has been viewed as an indictment of nineteenth century industrial capitalism and has been credited with returning the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and sombreness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print,Douglas-Fairhurst viii and has been adapted to film, opera, and other media.

NEW in 2009!! A Christmas Carol with JIM CARREY

This year the newest IMAX and 3D adaption of the timeless story is coming out and I only have been able to view the trailer you see here. It is an animated version, and from what I can see will be "over the top" when it comes to action and adventure, my hope is that the spirit of the story will not be lost, we'll all have to wait and see! It does look like fun!

Would You Rather Read "A Christmas Carol"?

Reading the story "Stave by Stave" may provide more facts than you see in the movies...that is what they called the chapters in the old original text, isn't it? You may enjoy reading editions written especially for your children.

Hi .... this is happynutritionist's sister. (I benefited for years from the help that she gave me to get started with taking herbs and vitamins ... but I digress ... this is about one of my favorite, favorite subjects ... something having to do with Christmas :-) which I absolutely love). My husband and I are somewhat connoisseurs of Christmas Carols and here's our take: By far, our dear Alistaire Sim is the best Ebenezer Scrooge, both as the bad Scrooge and the redeemed Scrooge. But we agree that (and I have to put aside family tradition, I love all of you, but....) Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol is the best all round version. The Kelsey Grammar Christmas Carol is the best of the musicals and second best all round Carol. Jason Alexander (aka George Costanze from Seinfeld) gives the best Marley hauting with some other ghostly cohorts. The old musical (the one with Albert Finney) is not great, but the best part is the "Thank You Very Much" set, still love seeing old Ebenezer dancing on his own coffin. (We just watch that part.) The Mr. Magoo, an old classic is fun and has one of the sweetest songs about "having the Lord's bright blessing". The Muppet Christmas Carol is cute and fun and has some good fun parts. There was one that was forgotten, it is Rich Little's Christmas Carol and when my husband played it the first time one of our first Christmas's together, I could have sworn I remember watching it with my Dad, back when it was on TV. It has a slight twist on the Carol story and it is funny. Have a blessed Christmas everyone.
