Dickens * A Christmas Carol * with Alastair Sim and Other Favorite Adaptions

Ranked #11,197 in Holidays & Celebrations, #191,791 overall | Donates to Food for Everyone Foundation

Everyone has a Favorite Version of A Christmas Carol

Whether it be as old as the 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol" with Alastair Sim which is celebrating it's 60th anniversary, or as new as Disney's 2009 adaption, "A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey, everyone has their favorite version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". Many love the wonderful story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, a man who transforms from a grouchy miser to a generous man who "knew how to keep Christmas well".

Your favorite version of the movie may depend on many things, for me it is based on family tradition. Each and every year we have made it a point of watching the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim playing the role of Scrooge. Personally, as good as many of the other versions are, and we'll look at as many as we can, none matches this one. Maybe it is due to tradition, maybe it is because the movie was released the same year that I was born which was only 2 days after Christmas in 1951, or maybe because Alastair Sim is Scottish, my heritage.

Another thing that I notice about this adaption of the movie is the reference by "the ghost of Christmas Present" to this being the time of year when we celebrate Christ's birth...and the reminder by him that some celebrate this not just one day of the year, but all days of the year, to me, this is what CHRISTmas is all about, so hate to see it left out of any adaption of the movie.

Lets take a look at the influence this single story by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, has had on movies, cartoons, television shows, and look ahead to a wonderful Christmas, trying to watch as many Christmas movies that have a good message behind them as we can.

Family Restoration and Forgiveness

Lessons learned from a movie

I have never watched this scene of the movie without getting a lump in my throat or a tear in my eyes. It is one of the last scenes in the movie, when Ebeneezer finally makes things right with his the nephew many years after his (Ebeneezer Scrooge's) sister died while giving his nephew life, just as Ebeneezer's mother had died during his own birth. There are so many life lessons in this movie, this one of forgiveness and restoration is so beautiful.

Good Business Practice

Another lesson from A Christmas Carol

After many years of giving his employee, Bob Cratchett, a meager salary and uncomfortable working conditions, Scrooge makes things right in this delightful scene from the end of the movie. Oh that all bosses that are struggling in business today could see that by giving, you receive. And that all employees could be like Bob Cratchett, willing to work and honor their bosses even if they don't always deserve it. Because Bob was able to hang in there, he was able to be part of this wonderful transformation in his boss, Ebeneezer Scrooge.

This scene makes me think of sitting with my father watching the movie. He was rather a stern man himself, secretly I would wish that he, too, could be transformed when I was a little girl, and I loved this part of the movie, because even my father laughed at it...I can hear him now...though he has been gone for years.

A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey

The latest adaption of A Christmas Carol

"A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey was released in 3D, IMAX in 2009, and is the latest of a long line of adaptions of the classic. It is an animated version, and though we didn't go to see it in the theater, from the trailer it appears that it was "over the top" when it comes to action and adventure. This will be one of those that we rent on DVD. It does look like fun!

Reading the story "A Christmas Carol" online (look along the left margin of the page this will lead to, and read each "Stave" and the conclusion) or by purchasing below may provide more facts than you see in the movies. Or say hello in my Guestbook!

I really like the Alistair Sim version, but I have the George C Scott version currently. I also like the adaptation made a while back 'An American Christmas Carol' with Henry Winkler as the Scrooge character.

I guess I don't have a favorite version yet. I'd have to watch them all, all the way through, to decide, but you've certainly covered the bases. I'm sure what you wrote will help people decide which version they'd like to try first. Great job of reviewing !

Hi .... this is happynutritionist's sister. (I benefited for years from the help that she gave me to get started with taking herbs and vitamins ... but I digress ... this is about one of my favorite, favorite subjects ... something having to do with Christmas :-) which I absolutely love). My husband and I are somewhat connoisseurs of Christmas Carols and here's our take: By far, our dear Alistaire Sim is the best Ebenezer Scrooge, both as the bad Scrooge and the redeemed Scrooge. But we agree that (and I have to put aside family tradition, I love all of you, but....) Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol is the best all round version. The Kelsey Grammar Christmas Carol is the best of the musicals and second best all round Carol. Jason Alexander (aka George Costanze from Seinfeld) gives the best Marley hauting with some other ghostly cohorts. The old musical (the one with Albert Finney) is not great, but the best part is the "Thank You Very Much" set, still love seeing old Ebenezer dancing on his own coffin. (We just watch that part.) The Mr. Magoo, an old classic is fun and has one of the sweetest songs about "having the Lord's bright blessing". The Muppet Christmas Carol is cute and fun and has some good fun parts. There was one that was forgotten, it is Rich Little's Christmas Carol and when my husband played it the first time one of our first Christmas's together, I could have sworn I remember watching it with my Dad, back when it was on TV. It has a slight twist on the Carol story and it is funny. Have a blessed Christmas everyone.
