Why not have a Party based on your favorite Christmas Movie

Do you have to watch A Christmas Story every holiday season or it just does not feel like the holidays? If you answered yes than you are like the majority of people out there like myself. This movie is a true classic and a must see every year. If you have yet to see it than you are truly missing out on a great movie and better add it to your to do list.

Recently I came across A Christmas Story Party Supplies and I got so excited. Being I am a party planner and love parties - I also love this movie. So I wanted to make a page full of ideas on how you can have a party based all around this Classic Movie. So here we go - Lets get the Party Started.....Wait until you see all the things I have found and come up with.

A Christmas Story Leg Lamp

Available in so many Sizes

You cannot host A Christmas Story Party without having the Famous Leg Lamp in the room. This is one of the most iconic pieces from the movie. When Ralhie's father won this lamp it was a major award. Remember the scene when he read the crate? "FRAGILE (FRA-GEE_LAY) it must be Italian!" Too funny.

Christmas Story Party Game Ideas

Some ideas I came up with playing off the movie

  1. How do Piggies Eat - Ralphie's brother always had to be coaxed to eat so his mom would have him pretend he was a pig and oink to get him to do so. So with that in mind pick a food that you want to use and put the same amount on plates for your party guests. Hands behind back they all must Oink like pigs while they race to see who can finish first.
  2. Crossword Game Raphies father won his famous Leg Lamp by completing a Crossword Puzzle that had to do with Great Figures in American Literature and mailing it in. So a twist on that - create a Crossword Puzzle on whatever subject you want that is age appropriate for the party and have a race to see who can complete it first. You can play in teams or individually. When done they must run a place it in a make shift mailbox you can set up. Once checked if all the answers are correct they are the winner. The prize can be Leg Lamp Puzzle, Keychain, Lamp or other Leg Lamp item. Here is a site where you can create your own Crossword Puzzles: Crossword Puzzle Maker
  3. What did you say? - Who can forget when Ralphie was helping his dad change the flat tire on the car and he dropped the bolts and said "Fudge", but that is not really what he said. So when he got home his punishment was to have a bar of Lifebuoy Soap in his mouth. So here is what you can do for the twist on this one. Have a small bar of soap for each guest - make a hole in one end and string it with a thin rope that would be tough enough to hold it. You are going to make each guest a soap necklace to wear around their necks. When the guests arrive you are going to pick a word they are not allowed to say - obviously make it one that will be used often (does not have to be a curse word - unless of course it is adults only). So for example - Christmas, Birthday, Party etc.. When someone hears another person use the word that person must then place the soap in their mouth for a set time - maybe 30 seconds. Now you can find things that look like bars of soap, but are edible if it sounds to gross - but really that is the point. This will be very funny.
  4. Want Ralphie Wants - For this game you can play it like telephone. Hand the first player in line the paper showing what Ralphie wants for Christmas. If you do not remember here it is: An official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model BB rifle with a compass in the stock and that thing which tells time. Then they whisper that in the next persons ear and so on down the line. See what the last person who has to repeat it aloud comes out with - it is not easy to remember unless you are a die hard movie fan.
  5. Little Ophan Annie's Message - Remember Ralphie waiting for his Little Orphan Annie Secret Society Decoder Pin to come in the mail? Then he had to listen the the radio show to hear the code so he can get his secret message and use his decoder pin to tell him what it was? Well to play off of this you can create your own Secret Decoders and see who can decode a special message you give them. So how do you make your own decoder? You did not think I would not tell you did you? I found a How to right here: How to make your own Pocket Decoder And just to know the numbers Ralphie was given were: 12,11,2,8,25,14,11,18,16,23,12,23,21,3,25 and his message was Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.
So a good prize for the one who can decode your message the quickest could be of course - Ovaltine.
  6. Help Save Flick's Tongue - So one of the most famous scenes from the movie is when Flick was Triple Dog Dared to stick his tongue to the pole outside and it got stuck. So a fun play on this would be to take a Toy Tongue or Candy Tongue if you can find one (have one for each guest) and freeze in a ice block. What you do is take a plastic cup and add water part way and let it freeze then take the tongue add it in and cover with water and let that freeze. Once frozen peel off the plastic cup and the Tongue should be frozen in the middle. Do this for each guest. Then take the frozen ice and stick them into plastic ziploc bags. When it is game time give each guest a bag and the object is to see who can get their Tongue unfrozen first. This is done by them having to melt the ice without breaking it - they can sit on it, rub it - whatever it takes. The first person to have their tongue free wins. So Triple Dog Dare your guests to be the one to get it out first.

A fun prize idea for the winner could be this Inflatable Tongue.
  7. You're gonna Shoot your Eye Out - Everyone kept telling Ralphie "You're gonna Shoot your Eye Out" every time he told them what he wanted for Christmas. So for this what you can do is get A Christmas Story Poster and glue it down to a Thick Poster board or Cardboard, then with an exacto knife carefully cut out Ralphie's Eyes leaving the glasses. So the only thing missing would be the spaces in the glasses. Then take some Tin Foil and make them into balls smaller enough that one could fit through the holes. These will be your BB's. Then your guests will see who has the best shot and can shoot the BB and get it through Ralphie's Glasses.
You can also just use the poster as is and make silver circles (to represent BB's) and just like a Pin the tail on the Donkey Game you can see who can pin the BB closest to his eye.
  8. I Can't put my Arms Down - Ralphie's brother Randy gets dressed to go to school by his mother and it is winter so she bundles him up so much he can't put his arms down. So what you can do with this is make 2 piles of winter clothing - hats lots of shirts, jackets, scarves, gloves mittens etc... Try to make both piles even. On go and one a a time each team member must go to the pile and put on all the winter clothing in the pile. It should be so much that when on they can hardly move - just like Randy. Then you can have some fun with it and make a mini obstacle course they have to go through before having to come back get undressed and tag the next team member to go. First team to complete wins.
A fun prize idea can be a Winter Hat, Scarf and Gloves.

How to make a Leg Lamp Cake

Now this is a Party Cake

The Leg Lamp Cake in the Photo was made by a Cub Scout Pack in Dayton, Ohio for their annual Cake Bake Contest and won the prize in the Funniest Cake Category.

So how do you make one?

You will need to be a little creative for this one, but it is not as hard as it looks. I would suggest you start off by drawing a pattern of the Leg Lamp on a piece of large paper or poster board. Once done with that I would cut it into sections. Cut out the Lamp Shade up to the knee and then do the same for the rest of the leg - so you have 2 pieces. Get a large piece of Cardboard and cover it with foil or any paper you choose for your cake to be displayed on (Go solid because you want your cake to stand out). Bake 2 Sheet cake size cakes and then use your patten on top of the cakes, follow and cut out your shapes. You should have enough for both pieces of your pattern - one per cake.

When done with that it is time to frost and decorate.
For the Lamp Shade you can add some yellow food coloring to Vanilla frosting to get your desired shade color. For the fringe you can use thin black licorice and stick all across the bottom.
Now for the Leg - to get a Skin Tone you can either purchase Wilton's Paste Colour - Copper (Light Skintone) or you can make it yourself following this: Take your food coloring and mix 8 drops of Yellow, 6 Drops of Red and 2 drops of Green then add it to your tub of Vanilla Frosting a small amount at a time until you get your desired shade of Skin Tone.
For the Shoe - That will be frosted all Black and you can use Wilton Black Icing Color or any Black Frosting you can purchase at the store.
For the Fish Net Stockings - You will need a steady hand for this part, but it should be quite easy. Just take a Thin Black Cake Decorator tip or Tube with the Black Frosting and make a Criss Cross Pattern all the way down the leg to look like a Fish Net.

You can adjust your cake size to whatever you want - it is your pattern. Have fun with it and know this will be the talk of the party!!!

A Christmas Story Party Food

What to serve at the party

Do you remember in the movie Ralphie's dad being so excited for the Turkey? When he kept trying to steal a taste and being yelled at by his wife. Then as that Turkey sat on the table the neighbor's dogs came running in and took Christmas Dinner right out the door. Then his father made the decision to go to a Chinese Restaurant - Chop Suey Palace to be exact and there they would eat their "Chinese Turkey". Peking Duck aka Chinese Turkey.

So with that being said your food should all be Chinese. You can serve any variation and I would even add in some Turkey just for the fun of it. I would set the table adding in Chopsticks and Take out Containers that your food can be served in etc....
