A Christmas Tree with a Little Boy theme
Twenty-two years ago when we learned we were to have a little boy, we began to collect Christmas tree ornaments with a little boy theme. We had a lot of fun shopping for "boy" ornaments. As it happened, we had two more boys so we continued to add to our collection. Each ornament was associated with a memory, reflecting something that our boys were interested in. This has been the theme of our Christmas tree over the years. Pictured on this page are ornaments that we might have chosen for our tree if they had been available at the time.
A Little Christmas History
The day we celebrate Christmas.
The day on which Jesus Christ died is plainly distinguishable, but the day of His birth is very much open to question. December 25 is only the day on which His birth is celebrated, not his actual natal day.It is thought that Jesus Christ was born in the night, because it was night when the angel declared His birth to the shepherds.

The Vernal Equinox
Some think that the date of 25th December, which certainly began in the Roman Church, was chosen to avoid the multiplication of festivals around the vernal equinox, and to appropriate to a Christian use the existing festival of the winter solstice-the returning sun symbolizing Christ's visit to earth. Another purpose was to draw Christian converts from those pagan observances with which the closing of the year was crowded. The license of the Saturnalia was turned into the merriment of Christmas. The Three Wisemen
Star of the East

STAR OF THE EAST
Star of the East, that long ago
Brought wise men on their way
Where, angels singing to and fro,
The Child of Bethlehem lay-
Above that Syrian hill afar
Thou shinest out to-night, O Star!

History of Christmas Carols
Christmas Traditions
Christmas carols are commemorative of the angels' song to the shepherds on the plains of Bethlehem. The English serenaders, who sang under the squires' windows in hopes of receiving a "Christmas box," add a touch of romance to the associations of the season. Red Tricycle Christmas Tree Ornament
The boys had a red tricycle like this.
More on Christmas Carols
Do you know these old favorite Christmas carols?

The mere mention of the names of the old time carols recalls the scent of evergreens, the pealing of the organ, the tinkle of sleigh bells and the music of the Christmas chimes. "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!" "While Shepherds Watched their Flocks by Night," "Gloria in Excelsis" and many others embody the very spirit of the season.
"Sing the song of great joy that the angels began,
Sing of glory to God and of good will to man!
While joining in chorus,
The heavens bend o'er us,
The dark night is ending and dawn has begun."

The Mistletoe
Thoughts on the Christmas Tradition of Mistletoe
"...and the mistletoe, with its white berries, hung up, to the imminent peril of all the pretty housemaids""If we are to believe the evidence presented by Caesar and his contemporary historians, the early Europeans were men enough to take their kisses where they found them, without waiting for such faint-hearted excuses as a cluster of greenish berries and waxen leaves overhead."
"Harvesting mistletoe must be quite an industry, for remember that you cannot go out and chop down a big tree of the stuff, just like that - mistletoe leads a wild, scattered life, as do most criminal characters. You have to go on a regular hunt for it; take along an axe, trace it to its lair, and slay it with one deadly stroke."
The Tradition of the Boar's Head
The Boar's Head Christmas custom.
During the reign of Elizabeth, the boar's head was the favorite holiday dish, and was served with mustard (then a rare and costly condiment), and decorated with bay-leaves and rosemary, which was said to strengthen the memory, to clear the brain and to stimulate affection. Boars were originally sacrificed to the Scandinavian gods of peace and plenty, and many odes were composed in their honor. The Wassail
More Christmas Traditions
That remarkable compound known as "wassail" was composed of warm ale or wine, sweetened with sugar and flavored with spices. Floating on its surface were bits of toast, roasted crabs and apples. The large bowl, festively decorated with ribbons, was passed around the table, each guest taking a serving, as a sign of friendship and good fellowship. Padres Baseball Cap Ornament

Why we eat Mince Pie on Christmas
History of Mince PIe
The triumph of the pastry cook's art was mince pie, the history of which goes back a long way. The shape used to be a narrow oblong, representing the manger at Bethlehem. The fruits and spices used in the mince pie were symbolic of those that the wise men of the Orient brought as offerings to their newborn King. Hockey Skates Ornament

The First Community Christmas Tree
A Public Christmas Tree in Madison Square
The first community Christmas tree was placed in Madison Square, New York City, during the Christmas season of 1912. It was inspired by the loneliness of a young American student in a strange German town during the holiday season of 1911. He resolved that on the following Christmas he would, if possible, provide a Christmas tree for lonely people. He told his experience to a friend in New York City. She conceived the idea of a public Christmas tree. Ten thousand people gathered about the tree on Christmas Eve. Keyboard Ornament

A Schoolboy's Christmas Recitation
A cute Christmas Poem
Somebody is Coming (Recitation)Somebody is coming in his big, big sleigh.
Hurry with the stockings, ere he comes this way!
There 's no need to tell you how he really looks.
You have seen his picture many times, in books!
Then hurry with the stockings and hang them in a row;
Teddy Bear must hang his, too - he wants a ribbon bow!
Be sure, when they are ready, you straightway go to sleep,
For, Somebody will never come, if once you take a peep!

The Spirit of Christmas
The Traditions of Christmas
The spirit of Christmas is a sacred thing. The holly wreaths hanging in a thousand windows, the tinseled trees and gifts for the children, the gatherings from far and near, for the one great occasion of the year when family ties are paramount. These things are symbols without which we should be poor indeed. Not for anything would we give them up, for they signify that which lies very close to our hearts. The true traditions of Christmas, the traditions which mark the love and reverence of countless generations for the real spirit of the day - hold them close to your heart.

- Being a mom of boys, I love this lens! Great selections. I particularly like the superhero ornaments as my sons loved to dress up as superheroes as well. Most recently we've had a patriotic theme for our tree since we have two war veterans now, but I do love this trip down memory lane for families with boys!
