Solar Power - Save Energy and Money With a DIY Home Solar Power System.

Solar power is the process of using the light from sun and turning it into an energy source.

Solar Power

Clean, Free, and Renewable Power From the Sun.

It has become a reliable alternative to regular power sources in remote areas. It has even been used in outer space. Solar power is used in homes, lighting, architectural projects, and cooking. It has become even more popular as the cost of fossil fuel continues to rise. Solar panels are designed to collect the power from the sun.

Once solar energy is collected by the solar panels it has to be converted into energy. This can be done by a process called solar thermal application.

It involves using the energy from the sun to directly heat air or liquids. The process of photoelectric application involves the use of photovoltaic cells to change the energy into electricity.

Solar power poses no harm to the environment. However, other threats to the environment may affect the ability to use solar power in the future.

A recent concern is global dimming, an effect of pollution that is allowing less sunlight to reach the Earth's surface. Global dimming is caused by pollution particles and global warming.

The Solar Electric Power Association is an organization of electric utility companies and the solar industry. They joined together to find solutions to meet our energy needs.

SEPA is a network of more than one hundred companies. Fifty are utility companies, twenty five are solar companies, and the rest are various types of businesses. They share experiences, knowledge, and information about solar programs, They also discuss policies and technology relating to their field.

Is Solar energy right for you? There are advantages to using this as a safe alternative to fossil fuel. Solar energy is free. It's clean and renewable. And It can be used in areas where electricity can't be set up easily.

The sun is not a resource that is going to be depleted. Disadvantages are that it doesn't work at night. The cost of creating solar power stations to store such energy is still fairly expensive. In some areas of the world, solar energy just isn't an option because the climate does not receive enough sun light.

How to Conserve Your House Energy

We all know how much of a headache bills can be. We all hate going to the mailbox, only to find a heap of bills waiting for us.

There's nothing more painful than paying for utilities. It seems that when we receive electricity bills, we are always surprised at how much energy we consume.

However high our house energy bills are, we see them as something we have to endure. After all, we all need to pay for our electricity, right? So whenever we see those high energy bills, we react with resignation, dig deep into our pockets and pay whatever the electric companies demand.

What you need to know is that there are ways to lower those house energy bills. There are a lot of simple and practical ways to conserve energy. By using these methods, you can significantly lower your house energy bill.

First of all, you need to realize that all the little things matter. You need to understand that there are a lot of small things we do that are wasteful of house energy. Some of these little wasteful habits may seem insignificant, but if they are combined, they might amount up to one third of your house energy bill.

Here are some of the habits which can cost you a lot.

1) Leaving the refrigerator door open - Some people may not see this habit as something that would significantly affect their energy bill. However, given the right information, you will see that this habit can actually cost you a lot of money.

You see, a refrigerator works by absorbing the heat within the compartment. If you open the refrigerator door, you let heat enter the system, which means that the refrigerator needs to consume more electricity in order to lower the temperature. By leaving the refrigerator door open, you are essentially trying to absorb all of the heat energy in the house.

Oh, yes, If you still do not know, the little light does go off when you close the refrigerator door so don't waste energy by trying to find out.

2) Leaving the lights on - This is a very common mistake made by every household in the world. Most people forget to turn off their lights and these lights consume electricity. Sure, one light turned on may not consume much house energy, but what if all your lights were left on? Surely, this would cost you a lot on your electricity bill.

If you can, you might want to open up your shades and let the sun shine into your life. Some people actually tend to draw their shades and then turn on their lights, what's more wasteful than rejecting free energy?

If you can't help forgetting to turn the lights off, you may want to consider buying some energy-saving lamps. These lights may cost you more when you first buy them, but these are guaranteed to save you a lot on house energy in the long term. By investing in these lights, you will be able to cut a lot off your house energy bill.

3) Playing with the thermostat - People hate being bored. However, please do not try and ease your boredom by turning the temperature up and down. Whenever you get the urge to adjust your thermostat, ask yourself this question: am I feeling uncomfortable because of the temperature or is it all in my head?

The same advice goes for air conditioners. Sometimes, people blame their discomfort on the temperature. However, you need to be honest with yourself and leave the thermostat alone, ok?

Here are some things you should do to conserve house energy:

1) Try to look for alternatives - In order to save on your house energy, try to look at alternative energy options.

You see, there are a lot of different home alternative energy devices available in the market today. These devices can actually support small home appliances by supplying them with free energy.

2) Try to look for energy-saving devices - There are a lot of devices available today that can maximize your house energy efficiency. These devices often only require you to plug them into a socket and they monitor your energy consumption. These ensure that no energy is wastes when you are operating your house appliances.

For now, these may cost you a pretty penny, but as the technology continues to develop, expect prices to drop significantly.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation - A Form of Alternative Energy

Insulate your home to conserve energy and save on utility bills.

It helps to be practical nowadays.

Household don't need additional costs in their expenses. Therefore, more and more households are opting for insulation to reduce their energy bills.

Heating and cooling your household takes up 50 to 70 percent of the total energy that is allocated for the usage of the entire home. By adding insulation, utility bills will be reduced. Also, if insulation has been installed properly, you will notice the dramatic reduction of energy costs.

Insulate various areas in your home. The priority in insulation is the attic. Include the access door which is located under the floor and above the heater. Then you should also double check the crawl spaces, as well as the edge of slabs.

Insulating walls that are already there may be limited but you have the option of remodeling these areas to make it accessible. Just make sure that the amount of insulation you apply here is recommended for the area that has been reconstructed.

As a guide, you can check out insulation books or go online for a visual manual of where to insulate and the recommended R-values of a particular area in the household.

Know that these changes in each household. In order for you to get the recommended R-value in the area you are residing, it is best that you call your electric company or your gas company. They will gladly recommend which R-value is appropriate with your zip code and your area.

Did you know that the greatest savings of energy are results of insulation installations? You can add more to your savings by adding insulation to your household.

Some homeowners have theirs installed in a comfortable manner for their convenience. This is because too much insulation in a particular area can reduce the insulation's effectiveness. If this happens, the whole point of it all will just be wasted.

Many households confirm that insulation increases their energy savings as much as 10 percent. This can be done by plugging air leaks to the insulation leaks. These are also found in outlets, electrical switches, pipes and bathtub and shower stalls. These are greater than the obvious insulation but by taking care of these, you are sure to have better insulation and more savings.

So why spend when you can save money in the first place? Just be sure that you are insulating those areas the right way though.

Solar Energy - This Commodity is Not for Sale

If anything good came out during the recent increases of the fuel oil prices, it is that once again, there is a merry interest in alternative sources of energy.

Even when gas prices have been decreasing like nothing we have seen before, the uproar created and the pain it did to business will have a good chance of sticking. The desire for alternative sources of energy is on the forefront and may it stay there for good - as it should.

Extracting oil from crops is a good idea; the downside is that food supplies could be dramatically reduced. Wind power is another excellent thing except for the many buts that wind power generation have.

If costs is the main objection to solar power generation that should be the least of worries.

The installation of solar panels is until today, considered a specialized job. Like any commodity in the market, when the demand is high but the supply is limited, the cost increase.

As more and more homes clamor for alternative sources of energy, better technology and more labor is drawn to the job that market forces could take place and result into much lowered prices. This though is still in the future.

Today the reality is the instability and the unpredictability of gas prices. But even if it does provide stable and predictable price movement, Solar energy is free and it is inexhaustible.

While the technology of tapping out this resource is not, homes that are solar powered are getting back dividends in terms of higher appraisal for their homes, confidence in not being surprised by power shortage and outage, not being dependent on the fluctuation in power prices and the definite advantage of having provided a better environment solution.

Today, the typical ways at tapping this resource usually are:

*Through a Heliostat - this are focusing collectors composed of mirrors that are aimed at the sun to collect the energy. The temperature that heliostats could provide reaches more that 4,000 degrees centigrade. This high temperature is sufficient for use even for furnaces.

*Through Flat Plate Collectors - employ a system of pipes. The water inside the pipes becomes heated and is ideal for heating purposes like schools, homes swimming pools, offices etc.

*Through Solar Distillation - instead of heat, this provides water. The mechanics is similar to the processes of plate collectors except that this is generally used to steam salt water. To do this, tanks and ducts are usually installed in surfaces that receive a good sun. Through the heat, the salt water turns into steam and when the steam condenses, the water is collected for regular use.

*Through photovoltaic Cells - These are the most common type of collecting solar energy characterized by solar panels installed in rooftops and other flat surfaces that there is a good sun, converting the power collected into electricity.

Unlike any products, whether refined or manufactured, the processing of solar energy do not need additional costs of energy to power it up. It is energy generating by itself. Except maybe for regular inspection and replacement of parts (when it employs a mechanical device), the tapping of solar energy is virtually maintenance free.

Once installed, it could be used for as long as needed for the amount of energy, (depending on the capacity of the unit), which the owner requires.

A kiddie solution in lowering your utility bills

Maintaining a household has never been as difficult as before considering the escalating costs of many utilities.

Not only do you have to worry about the food you need to serve everyday but you also have to plan a strategy to pay for the many costs generated by your family.

Among them is the key cost of generating sources are utilities, which include, electricity and water.

Here are some ideas to get kids involved in lowering utility bills.

LIMIT USE OF ELECTRONIC GAMES IN THE HOUSE

It is no secret that kids love electronic games, as this is a great way to pass the time and is surely fun. If your house has a video game console or computer try to assign a time when the kids can play with it.

As much as possible don't let your kids play with their video games around the clock, as this will result in soaring electric bills. Remember that when playing video game consoles the kids will also use the television. That in itself shows that more than one electronic appliance is running at full tilt.

Assign a time for video games and never allow the kids to exceed. It is advisable to keep a limit of one to two hours of gameplay during weekdays and four hours during the weekend. Also make sure that your kids study first before they plug in their consoles or even computers.

Another key method is asking your kids to unplug their electric gadgets when not in use, as these devices eat up electricity even when in stand-by mode. This practice also teaches them to be neat, as they would be forced to properly store their electronic toys.

PRESERVE USE OF WATER

Advise your kids to preserve their use of water. This can done by limiting the use of the shower or the bathtub.

Try to use a medium-sized container for kiddie baths instead of the shower to help control consumption.

Tell them to close the faucet in the middle of brushing and just fill up a small cup when gargling. While it is also fun to splash around in the bathtub, remember you need at list 25 gallons of water to fill up a stardard-sized tub. Limit use of the tub during weekends.

In order to help control you utility bills, the kids need to be involved is working towards efficiency. It is always helpful when a child becomes responsible at an early age, as he or she will carry this up to adulthood.

Parents should also realize that maintaining a household is basically a team effort and all of the family members should do their part.

Solar Powered Lights

All of our energy comes from the sun. Solar powered lights offer a low cost and do not pollute the environment.

Such lights are very popular for garden use and landscaping. They are hassle free. There are no cables to worry about or the possibility of being electrocuted.

Are solar powered lights right for your home? These lights produce an intense glow and shadowing around the surrounding areas.

Solar powered lights are perfect for those applications where a regular power source is unavailable. The solar panel collects sunlight and converts electricity. The electricity is stored in rechargeable batteries. The lights will be strongest during the first few hours of operation and then slowly diminish in output.

There are many styles and brands of solar powered lights to choose from. They are inexpensive. They are designed to accent your home. Many choose this option because it is much cheaper that installing electricity to another area as well as the environmental impact.

Most individuals can install solar powered lights easily by themselves. This again saves money over having a professional come to set up for electricity.

The internet offers many reviews on brands of solar powered lights. It is a great resource for comparing cost and effectiveness of the products available.

Several towns have taken to installing solar powered lights as street lights. They are able to store up energy from the sun during the day and operate on that energy until early morning. The Solar Outdoor Lighting company donated and installed such lighting at the Ocala National Forest.

Miami International Airport installed solar powered lights to offer additional security for their employees. They chose them for their low cost, environmental friendliness, the fact that they took a fifth of the time to install as regular lighting fixtures, and that they are going to be undergoing construction soon. The solar powered lights can be moved easily.

The biggest disadvantage of the solar powered lights is that they do require an adequate amount to sunlight to create the energy. If you have several days of cloudy weather, the lights may not operate effectively.

This has affected the decision of some businesses. They feel if it is important enough to install lighting, then it needs to be reliable and available on a regular basis.
