Do Let Us Know That You Called By and Support the Dog Is For Life Message :-)

From the lens A Dog Is For Life.

Saw this on another lens so I wanted to take a look. Adding it to my new lens on adopting a pet if that's ok.
  • AlphaChic Feb 19, 2012 @ 7:19 am | delete
A dog is definitely for life. I would pass up a job/promotion/anything before moving somewhere my dog couldn't go with me. My dogs are my family. Oh, yeah, and hubby, too ;)

We love our rescue dog and find she is the best pet we've ever known. Before we adopted her from the Humane Society, the vet there told us she would need a tooth pulled. We first checked with our own vet to make sure we could afford the antibiotic medicine and the operation as well as special diet needs. Needless to say, we took her in and got her all fixed up. :) She is a joy to us everyday (and not just for Christmas.) :)
  • karmicchristian Feb 10, 2012 @ 12:49 pm | delete
I am frankly not a great fan of 'personal pets' though I love all free animals and birds! Shared with those who are more discerning than an insensitive me! :)
  • OhMe Jan 20, 2012 @ 7:11 pm | delete
Yes, I do support the Dog Is For Life Message. I know that ours always have been.
  • Christene Jan 20, 2012 @ 7:04 pm | delete
I have 3 children. Two of them happen to be dogs. ;)
They are my babies! Definitely family to us.
  • grannysage Jan 20, 2012 @ 6:25 pm | delete
My family seemed to just "get" dogs, someone would give us one, or we would find a stray. A lot of them were not suited to us, one killed chickens, others chased cows, one was so hyper he knocked the kids down. My youngest daughter has a natural talent for training dogs so the dogs in her care do better than the previous ones did. I agree, it is important to find the right breed. I have a friend who writes about Australian Shepherds and claims they are truly special.

We recently adopted a dog from a family member. It's our first dog ever. Have always had cats (am a cat person..*hides*). Have always felt a dog is a needier animal and having so many children in our lives we knew we couldn't devote the time and energy that a dog needs..So now we are dog owners, as I mentioned for the first time, and we are so in love with her. She is the light in this house. As soon as the kids walk through the front door, it's "where's Mitzy" ..have even put videos up on the internet of here..she talks..it's so funny. Thanks for the lens, Dogs are for life!

Back to visit this lens again. It made such an impression on me when I visited before, that I had "liked" it, but I was not an angel then. So now that I am, I came back to bless this lens. People need to realize that a pet is a responsibility for 24/7, and can't be put away somewhere when they're not convenient, so buying a pet for Christmas is not a good idea.
  • colleen_w Nov 20, 2011 @ 5:01 pm | delete
So true that your adopted pet is for a lifetime. Too quickly people adopt a cute little puppy for a family pet for the holidays. The holidays come and go and it is discovered that the cute little puppy grows up and requires attention, love and training. A puppy is a commitment of time, love, training and money for life.
I have 2 English Springer Spaniels. They are brother and sister separated by 1 litter.
They are our family for life.
  • PamelaDW Nov 13, 2011 @ 6:39 pm | delete
Great tips. Glad you put so much information on adopting from shelters.

Might be good to also warn folks that pet store puppies are usually provided by puppy mills.
  • nancycarol Nov 12, 2011 @ 11:53 am | delete
I totally support the Dog is for Life Message. Giving a child a dog for Christmas is one of the reasons the turned-in-to-the-pound statistics go up in January, February and March. The owners had no idea what they were getting into and got the pet on impulse, which is never a good idea. Good lens and thanks for sharing.

I wondered if you would like to add Puppy And Dog Care by Alexandra Santos to your book list. She is a lifelong dog lover and trainer and the book is really very good. Worth a look, it's on Amazon.
  • SheilaSchnauzies Nov 8, 2011 @ 11:09 am | delete
Blessings to you today from a Miniature Schnauzer rescuer and Squid Angel. This is a very important message you're trying to get out to the world. Fabulous lens!

Yes, research and get a breed that fits with your activity level. With my mobility issues, I needed a dog who would be satisfied and stay healthy with a rather sedentary lifestyle. I ended up with a pug and it could not be a better fit. We seem capable of about the same amount of exercise at this point. We are very happy together. An energetic dog would have been miserable here and would have no doubt ended up causing problems. The time spent in research definitely pays off! Great advice!

Excellent advice and well written lens. Blessed!
  • gottaloveit Nov 5, 2011 @ 7:14 am | delete
This is one of the most important Squidoo pages I've read and I can't agree more - just ask my 6 rescues (2 of whom were Christmas puppies for some other family who wouldn't train them). This should be necessary reading. Well done.
  • lestroischenes Nov 5, 2011 @ 2:22 am | delete
Great lens full of excellent advice. I'd recommend an English pointer as a family dog if you can give it tons of exercise. Our dog, Molly, spends all day all summer running around our garden but she goes loopy if she can't get out for a really good run.

Did you mention worming and children? (Forgive me if I missed it). Worms was one of my greatest fears when Molly came to live with us as a puppy and my son was 5 years old.
  • ChrissLJ Nov 4, 2011 @ 7:14 am | delete
I'm a major advocate for only adopting from shelters. In the States 75-90% of all dogs that enter any given animal shelter (that's non-kill) will be euthanized. The vast majority of these lovely dogs are there through no fault of their own but because people did get their children dogs for Christmas and just didn't realize what that meant or their economic situation changed.
  • Ramkitten Jul 25, 2011 @ 1:12 pm | delete
    Excellent advice and information. *blessed*
  • sebastian1234 Apr 23, 2011 @ 6:08 pm | delete
I love this lens. There's so many people out there that take on a pet, not taking in consideration the responsibility that goes with it. Lensrolling this lens.

I do so want to adopt a shelter dog. I have been dogless for more than 15 years and much as I love my cats, a dogs love is something I miss dearly. Just approved this award winning lens to the voting plexo at Purple Star Pastiche -welcome!

I am lenrolling this to my Teddybears Story lens, about my brave dog in a wheel cart. Please keep up the great efforts here.
  • Momsbusy247 Dec 4, 2010 @ 12:56 pm | delete
Thank you, such an important message. My dog is 16 and lost the use of her back legs, but has her own little wheel cart to get around, I will never give up on her, as she has never given up on me. Wonderful lens. I wish I was a squid angel right now!!!
  • KiwiGayle Nov 24, 2010 @ 10:59 pm | delete
I think the point should be as far as the dog is concerned his/her person is for life and it's never going to enter their head to move on because they've met a new dog, or got a new kennel. It is inconceivable to them that their person will not always be there!
  • Cath1125 Nov 11, 2010 @ 3:13 am | delete
I wrote this on my schoolbag in 1985 when I was 15, people just laughed at it, but it is so true, I do not know how anybody can be cruel to dogs. They are so much part of my life.
  • sandyspider Apr 5, 2010 @ 8:41 pm | delete
I grew up with pets. The short breaks in between were hard to take. They are part of my life. Wonderful lens. I will lensroll this in some of my pet lenses.

Great lens! I love that slogan "A dog is for life." It really applies to all pets as well. It's sad that many people don't put real thought into this. It's a lifetime commitment that we make as pet owners. I love my furry little critters (4 cats!). 1 is a rescue cat and 3 were strays.

I've had one **distant** family member in particular that every other year thinks that it's a good idea to get a small dog for her kids (just because it's cute) and sure enough ends up giving it away later. It's heartbreaking and I wish more people would realize that pets are not toys to just give away when they are tired of them. Great lens again!
Pets are little angels that we should love and respect!
  • pkmcr Nov 21, 2009 @ 5:52 pm | delete
Thank you for your kind words of support and also for sharing the unfortunate reality that many pets have to endure - hopefully by continuing to press home the message we can make a difference
  • lens4Him Nov 17, 2009 @ 7:50 pm | delete
I see you have a photo of my Jack Russell on your lens (again) LOL. Good advice, and the fact that the 'a dog is for life not for Christmas' slogan is 30 years old is a reminder that I am no longer the puppy I used to be :)

The local humane society is located right next to the park here where I take my dog for a walk every day..... it really is quite sad to hear the dogs barking knowing that, unlike my dog (who incidentally we rescued), they don't have a loving home of their own.

Tomorrow I have to take my dog Ulysses to the Vet. He has a swelling inside his ear that I know will will require surgery. But like you say, having these animals means I must take care of them when they get sick, and it is my pleasure to do so!!

This is great information and super advice. We have had at least two dogs for many years. Yes, it is terrible to lose one, and they do have relatively short life spans, but oh the joy they add to our lives. I hope every parent who is considering a Christmas puppy will take the time to read and heed your wonderful advice. Blessed.

Wonderful advice! We spent months visiting breeders, asking questions, seeing different characteristics of the breed before we found the Sheltie that was meant to share his life with our family. We had 9 wonderful years with him before he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Good helpful advice and information for anybody considering getting a dog. One of our dogs died 7 weeks ago and we are heartbroken. A dog is not only NOT just for Christmas, it is a member of the family and needs care, protection and love and then tears when they go. Blessed by an Angel.

Carol thank you so much and my heart goes out to you and yours - the little one had a wonderful home and all the love in the world and that is very special

You make a commitment to your dog as strong as any other contract. To get rid of one just because it is not what you thought is ludicrous. Be sure you know what you are doing before you make your choice. It is for life!!!!!
