A Dog's Crate is her Cave
Ranked #5,936 in Pets & Animals, #147,728 overall
Choosing the right crate for your dog is important!
Did you know that your dog views her crate as her personal "cave" or "sanctuary?" The crate should be a safe place for your dog to rest and to "get away from it all."
Choosing the right crate for your dog is one of most important decisions that you will make for your pet. It must be sturdy and comfortable for her, as well as being the right size.
Note: I do not intend to talk about crate training on this page.
Should you crate train your dog?
I think so...
Crate training is a relatively new phenomenon for dog owners. I remember when I had my first dog, and our potty training experience was pretty awful. The entire kitchen was lined with newspaper and the dog was allowed to do his business in the kitchen. I was young, and I don't remember how this resolved itself except that he was finally housebroken and turned out to be a fairly well trained little Shih Tzu.
What makes a big difference with crate training is that this is about more than just potty training your puppy. Your dog's crate becomes a safe place where she can go if she feels threatened or if she just needs to rest. This is your dog's "happy place," probably much like your own bedroom is.
Crate training is not difficult. I'm not talking about potty training or housebreaking here. I'm talking about teaching your dog to trust and to use her crate.
Your dog's crate needs to be a safe place. Please don't ever use the crate as a place to punish your pet! Your dog might not understand a "time out" and the crate would not be an appropriate place to give your dog a "time out" anyway.
Crate Size is Important
Choosing the right sized crate
Your dog's crate should be big enough for her to stand up and turn around. That's it. It should certainly be no smaller than that, as it will be cramped, and it shouldn't be any larger than that.
If you are concerned about purchasing a crate that your puppy will only grow out of, there are ways to partition the crate and expand it as your dog gets bigger. However, much of the purpose of the crate will be lost if your dog's crate is too big or too small, and if it is too big, it will be almost useless as a potty training tool.
Below you will find crates in several sizes, available on Amazon. A good idea would be to measure your dog's height and length, and then choose a crate that is close to (and slightly bigger than) your dog's measurements.
What About Travel Crates or Carriers?
If you travel, then you may want to purchase a travel crate for your dog. About a year ago, my husband and I purchased an inexpensive travel crate at Walmart for our sugar gliders when we were traveling. It was a collapsible model that lasted us for about eight months before it needed to be replaced, and it was only being used by two very small creatures who weigh in at less than two ounces each!
For obvious reasons I recommend getting a sturdy travel crate such as those below. None of these are carriers, though you will be able to find those easily enough if you look through the related products on Amazon.
A travel crate allows you to take your dog's den with her wherever she goes!
Making the Crate a Pleasant Place
Your dog's crate needs to be a happy place. I've already said to please not use your dog's crate as a place for punishment, but how do you encourage your dog to like the crate if she is shy about it?
I really struggled with this at first. I couldn't see a place where my dog would be confined for up to three hours at a time as being a "happy" place for her, especially considering that it is not recommended to put dog beds in your dog's crate.
I fed Libby in her crate. That is the main thing, and we still do it. Her food is always placed inside her crate at mealtimes. She also has a water bottle in her crate for when she must remain in it and we aren't at home.
Finally, give your dog toys in her crate. My favorite to use is the Kong toy. Stuff one of these with peanut butter and then freeze and offer to your dog. It will keep her busy for quite a while!

- Crates sure make traveling pets a lot safer than they were in the past. What one fellow I saw did was fill gallon milk jugs with water, freeze them, and then set these cool bottles in with the pup to keep her cool. She also licked the side of the jug for water he said. I thought that was a great idea for summer travelers.

- Our dogs love their crates. We use them for training puppies, but as the dogs grow up they still like having their crates. I don't think we've closed a crate door in over 3 years now - but most days each dog gives herself a little crate time, usually when they are very tired and want a place where it's easy for them to prop their feet up when they are sleeping on their backs. :)
