Your Dogs!

Hello there...!

Imagine our world without our dogs!

How Do We Choose the Names We Give Our Dogs?

Getting a new dog is such an exciting event for the whole family and will start endless discussions and arguments about the new pet's name...

It is unlikely that everyone will agree, so you might have to put the names in a hat and pull out the winning one!

It will be interesting to see, under which group your choice of name will fall.

There seem to be five main groups...

Traditional

This includes names like Buster, Fido, Rover, Butch and Jock. These names have been chosen for dogs over many years and are still popular today.

Character

This is obviously either a character desired in the dog or one observed. Examples of this are Danger, Cheeky, Sweetie and Skippy.

Appearance

What does the pet look like - a grey dog could be Misty, a tan coloured dog may be called Rusty, a white puppy could be Snowy or what about Latte - a wonderful colour!

Celebrities

A popular choice especially amongst the young pet owners...Beckham, Rooney, Britney, Posh or Beyonce depending on who you admire most, or TV Celebrities such as Snoopy, Pippin, Lassie, Laddie, Wogan, Digger and Doodles.

Children love to name their pets after their favourite characters and not only if the characters are dogs, but others like Noddy, Micky, Minnie, Milo and Dipsy, to name but a few.

What if the pet is a substitute child?

Then the names get very human such as George, Samantha, Sally, Jessie or Jack.

Of course if you are getting two dogs, then you can have a lot of fun choosing a pair of names!

Some that come to mind are Tom and Jerry, Posh and Becks, Will and Harry, Ant and Dec, Fred and Ginger, Sugar and Spice, Romeo and Juliet and many more I am sure you can think of!

So have fun and take your time - the dog and it's name will be with you for a very long time...make sure it has a name that you feel proud and happy to call out loud, when being the family dog walker!

How to Build a Play Sand Pit - for Your Dogs!

You can play in it too...!

Dogs that dig - the trick is to teach them to dig, where you want them to dig...and not in your flowerbeds...!

So make them a sand pit!

Dogs love to dig and some more than others, so why not let them do what dogs do naturally and at the same time enjoy yourself too, having fun playing with your dog.

Approximate size of sand pit for a small dog is 4x4ft (1.2 x 1.2m) and a large dog is 8x8ft (2.4 x 2.4m)

Dig out the hole and lay a bed of stone chips, for drainage, in the bottom of the cavity.

Line the sides of the hole with treated garden timber and fill with play pit sand (timber and sand available from garden centres). Dampen the sand with some water, to make for easier digging.

You will need to cover the pit when not in use, so as not to allow the local feline population to treat it as their own deluxe personal toilet! Heavy plastic can be used and weighed down with four wooden planks or bricks.

Right...sand pit ready! Now to get the dog used to the idea, that he is allowed to dig here, start off by finding some treasure.

Treasure Suggestions

Hard Dog Biscuits
Large uncooked Marrow Bones
Rawhide Dog Treats
His Toys such as Balls (Toys can hidden in paper (not plastic) bags to make it even more exciting!)

Bury the treasure and then encourage your dog to start digging to find it! Go on, get down there and dig with him! He will soon get the idea and enjoy the digging and chewing involved!

Tidy up Time

Before you cover up the area, do take a rake and clear out any bits of food or bones. This will keep the pit clean, odour-free and loosen and level the sand for the next session.

Have fun with your dogs and their sand pit!

Dogs Save the Health Service Thousands of Pounds!

The mental health of the nation is protected...not by the NHS but by Your Dogs!

Well that is something to think about!

How much better is our day having a dog at home.

You have a bad day ot the office, commute for an hour on a train, drive in traffic from hell (in the rain) and when you arrive home, who is beside herself with joy to see you...your wife? Your kids? No...they might be happy that you are there, but not wriggling in absolute ecstasy at your feet, eyes shining with unconditional love...Oh well if your wife did that, you would think she had totally lost it, but you get my drift!

But imagine what that welcome does for your mental health...!

And then the walk that follows, with this same loving dog, makes you feel even better. Exercise and relaxation...no pill or treatment can ever replace that combination.

My Dog, My Comforter

The world had all gone wrong that day
And tired and in despair,
Discouraged with the ways of life,
I sank into my chair.

A soft caress fell on my cheek,
My hands were thrust apart.
And two big sympathizing eyes
Gazed down into my heart.

I had a friend; what cared I now
For fifty worlds? I knew
One heart was anxious when I grieved--
My dog's heart, loyal, true.

"God bless him," breathed I soft and low,
And hugged him close and tight.
One lingering lick upon my ear
And we were happy--quite.

when crossing a bridge near her home, she

trying to drown a little dog..."

The story is of good people, a brave dog and how good deeds are rewarded...

Pet Loss - How to Help Children Grieve

It's hard when a pet dies...

Children can be devastated by the death of a pet, even a little hamster or a rat. A structured sequence of events will help them let go and move on.

When a pet dies, be practical and upfront. Tell the child that it is natures way - animals are born, they live their lives and they die. Better not to give them hope that they are just asleep or they will expect them to wake up and be alive again. More pain when they realize this is not going to happen. Get them busy with making decisions about what happens next.

If practical, decide where the animal is to be buried. Talk about how the chosen place is "nice and shady" or "under their favourite tree" to make them feel the pet would like to lie in rest in that spot.

If not practical (ie. the animal is being buried elsewhere) then choose a place where a little memorial can be set up.

Let the child take a sheet of paper and draw a picture and /or write a few words about their pet. Slip the paper into a plastic sleeve and attach it to a cross (garden cane can be used to make a cross - use string to bind the two sticks together) If a cross is not appropriate for your religion, then just use the cane as a stake.

Hold a little ceremony and help the child put his picture up on the spot chosen. If you feel the child will be too upset, seeing the actual burial, then arrange for that to be done without him there and then have the ceremony later. If practical, a small plant can be planted on the site or place a flower in a simple container, like a jam jar.

Give the child a small photo album or scrapbook and let him put together (with your help if needed) some of the photos you have of the pet and let him draw and write about any of the memories you have of his pet ... funny things he did, where he liked to sleep, tricks, his favourite food, naughty things he did and so on. (If it is say a rat and you don't have photos, then look on the Internet and find a similar looking rat.)

While a new pet will never replace, exactly, the one just lost, it will go a long way in easing the pain and distracting the child from his loss. Don't think, that it is not a good idea, as it too will die one day. That is life and children are better for growing up aware, that that is how it is.
