Gardening is for kids too!
Children love hands on activities, and it seems the dirtier they get the happier they are. And gardening is one of those activities that most children seem to enjoy. It gives them an excuse to dig in the dirt, and get grim under their fingernails and not have to worry about what their parents are going to do. Gardening is a great way to spend more time with your children, especially the little ones. Have you've ever listen to your son after his class did the 'bean in a moist towel' experiment? Notice how his little eyes light up as he talks about how it was just a bean and then it sprout? Now think what will happen when you get him in the garden. It doesn't have to be hard work, and after he's plant a few tomato seeds or plants he'll feel like he's accomplished something grand. And you can use the garden to teach your daughter responsibility, if she can keep a garden alive for a year or two or beyond it might be time to see how she handles that kitten she's been asking about. Of course, cats are a different type of living thing. You might want to stick to the garden.

Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots: Gardening Together with Children
Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots
A children's gardening book review
In Roots, Shoots, Buckets, & Boots, Sharon Lovejoy strings an enchanting tale as she writes about a subject she loves, and it is obvious in her book. She describes wonderful garden creations that are sure to have you children oohing and awing in their glee. Not only will you learn about the proper plants and tools to use but Lovejoy leaves a trail of interesting facts, about nature, for you to discover as you turn the pages. She fills the book with instructions about vegetable gardens, and flower gardens. Some of the gardens in the book need a few more adults if you want to get things done but Lovejoy provides clear steps to follow on how to get that garden planted. Your children will hardly be able to wait once they've seen some of the projects in the book. Of course be aware that some of the flower plants included in this book are dangerous if consumed or comes in contact with a scrape or cut in the skin. You don't want any poisonous plants anywhere near your herb garden. Although some of these plants can be beautiful, it is best not to have them anywhere near your children, because even the older ones can make a mistake. If you are intrigued by the gardens that have those flowers hold off on planting the gardens or find a substitute. Some of the flowers to be weary of are Morning glories, jasmine tobacco, four-o-clocks, and moon flowers which have either poisonous leaves, seeds, or roots. Don't let your children near them.
