A Garden Theme for a Growing Girl’s Bedroom

As your little girl grows up you may notice that one day her room simply does not fit her anymore. She is not quite a grown up, but she is certainly not a child any more, and here bedroom should reflect this progression of time. While she may still love some of her childhood toys, she is also beginning to develop her own personal style that can express in her room.

As you are designing her new space, do it together and you will both have a memorable experience. She may begin to appreciate your decorating skills, and you may begin to appreciate her fresh sense of creativity. Solicit her opinion when you are in the planning stages. If you like using a garden theme for your daughter's room, then sell it to her. A garden theme can be feminine; it can be whimsical, or it can be funky.

Of course once you all choose to go with the garden theme, the real fun can begin. While flowers are a natural element of a garden theme, you do not want to overdo them, because you may end up with a room better suited for grandma than your daughter. So even if your daughter loves flowers, make sure you find a way to make them youthful, and keep their numbers balanced in your room design.
When you are selecting your flower designs you may wish to take a graphic interpretation or you may rather have a literal interpretation of the flowers that you choose. Try to select flowers that are reminiscent of a garden like roses, orchids, carnations and hydrangeas rather than flowers that may be more tropical like hibiscus or bird or paradise.

If your daughter wants her room to be pretty, you may opt for a cottage garden theme for her room. Soft, pale colors in pink, blue and green help create a youthful and feminine space that is neither too old nor too young for your child's bedroom. By adding a cottage flavor to your garden theme, you can include patterns that will combine nicely with the pastels to create a harmonious look that is at once feminine and fun.
When you are deciding how you want to paint the walls in your daughter's room you can choose a faux paint technique like color washing to add depth and texture to the walls, or you may choose to hang wallpaper instead. Either way, look for soft pastels and muted patterns to achieve a cottage garden look in your daughter's room.

When it comes to bedding, you will probably want to steer towards lighter fabrics like cotton and stay away from heavy wool covers. If included these heavier items would be best incorporated into the room as a lap blanket or a throw blanket. For the bed itself, an iron framed bed is a great way to continue the garden aesthetic, as it is reminiscent of a garden gate. The lines of a wrought iron bed can also add a very feminine aesthetic to the bedroom.

Then bring in wall art and accessories: You can include a metal wall vase filled with faux flowers, or a grouping or metal art leaves on the wall. This type of wall treatment can keep the room from being a little too frilly.

While there are many different themes that will work for the bedroom of a young teen girl, the cottage theme can make her feel at once youthful and grown up.
