Loving this phase of my life...

I grew up and still live in the great state of Indiana. I am proud to be a Hoosier, although there is much disagreement on what a Hoosier really is. Most of all, I am thrilled to have reached the phase in my life where three little girls call me Grandma. It truly is the best "gig" I have ever had.

My Mom used to love to tell the story that when I was asked as a little girl what I wanted to grow up to be my answer was often: "I want to be a Grandma!" She would laugh and tell how confused it made me when the adults would tell me that I had to be a Mommy before I could be a Grandma. A little self analysis makes me wonder if at my young age, I was trying to convey that I wanted to be like my Grandma and not my Mom. Ahh, but that is a different therapy session altogether.

In the next few paragraphs, I want to give some reasons why I think growing up in Indiana gave me some skills in grandparenting.

Hoosier Hospitality And Grandmas

Indiana MapPeople from Indiana, known as Hoosiers, are rather renowned for our hospitality. Most natives of Indiana have a courteous, open, and friendly nature to them, maybe it is something in the water we drink. At an early age we see the example of being helpful and friendly to our neighbors and newcomers. I grew up thinking it was some sort of sin if a person didn't go help a neighbor in need or take a plate of cookies and some iced tea or lemonade to a new neighbor.

So, how does that relate to being a Grandma? Well, in my humble opinion, quite a lot. When you listen to people talk about their favorite Grandma don't they usually expound on the qualities that she had that defines hospitality? Grandmas tend to be loving souls who make you feel that you are the most special person in the world. They are glad you came to visit and they are always there with a helping hand. At least that is the way my Grandma was and it probably didn't have anything to do with her being from Indiana. She adored her grandchildren and let them know it in very special ways. It is the type of Grandma I want to be with my own grandchildren.

Some Famous Folks From Indiana

Although, I am not famous for being a Hoosier or for being a Grandma; there are some rather famous people who also grew up in the wonderful state of Indiana.

What I Want For My Grandchildren

Grandma's familyHardly a day goes by that I don't recall at least one of my Grandma's little "pearls" of wisdom. She really was a great role model for me growing up. She was a remarkable woman who made every one of her 11 children and the grandchildren who followed feel special. The picture at the right is from the early 1960s with Grandma and Grandpa in the center and a few of us who came for Sunday Dinner. She, happily, cooked for the whole crowd.

My favorite saying from Grandma was: "Every morning when you look in the mirror, you best be liking that person lookin' back at you." Pretty profound for a simple woman but it is something that I have really tried to live by. My hope as a Grandma is that I can guide them gently with my little pieces of advice as they grow and that they will hear my voice encouraging them even when I no longer walk the earth with them.

I want my grandchildren to be happy with who they are and what they choose to become. I want them to have wonderful memories of coming to Grandma's house and knowing that they were loved unconditionally.

Memories of:
  • baking cookies and cupcakes
  • dancing the jitterbug
  • my laughter
  • reading to them
  • home cooked meals
  • family history
  • encouragement
  • compassion

I do not care so much that they remember "things" I gave them but I do hope that they remember the example of living that I shared with them as they grew.

Bev with brothers

I had an instinct for mothering....that is me trying to calm my baby brother down. Lord, that boy could throw a tantrum!

A Blog And An Afghan

I recently designed and created an afghan for my grandchild expected to arrive in August but entered the world in September. You can get the free pattern with the link below. I will be creating another as my oldest grandchild has now decided she wants a special blanket made by Grandma. You know, that just warmed my old heart!

I also love to look for gifts for my grandchildren and blog about the things that I have found.

Everyone Has A Grandma Dear To Them

Well, at least most people have fond memories of one or both of their Grandmas. My hope is that my grandchildren will have the same sort of fond memories of me that I have of my Grandma and that having a figurine like the one below will help them remember the time we shared.

A Few Other Thoughts About Being A Grandma

Written while sitting at my desk in Indiana, I have shared some other ideas on being a Grandma.

A cupcake and coffee sounds great. I've enjoyed reading this lens. Sounds like my grandma. The ripple afghan is one of my favorites to make. A nice pattern to pass on.

I'm just in Ohio...I would love to stop by for cupcakes and coffee and talk about those "pearls of wisdom" you were offering:)! Love the lens...

I enjoyed learning about you. Absolutely love the photos. Yes cupcakes and coffee please!

Love reading grandma stories since I don't have that opportunity. Raising a grandchild does not allow me to be the grandma except at bedtime when the parenting roles are put away. I bet you are the best grandma ever!

I love your line: Grandmas Are: Mothers with more experience! My grandmother was the most special person in the world to me and her 'words of wisdom' are remembered to this day. I'm now a grandma to 3 Boys and love being called "Grandma". Enjoy your girls ... and that new little one coming along.

I was blessed to know both my grandmas, two great-grandmas and a great-great grandma. Growing up, my Granny (great-grandma) lived across the street and was one of the most important people in my life. I miss her.
