A Guide to Fasting

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying,

"Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?"

And Jesus said to them,

"Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said,

"If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."

But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ' He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, ' In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"

Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."

Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'" Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Nor is this the work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have transgressed in this matter. Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter." Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support. Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain heads of the fathers' households, were set apart by the fathers' households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food." And he said, "While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?'

But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

"Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!"

Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said,

"He is dead."

But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?"

So He said to them, "This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting."

there are some of us who might associate fasting with food. that is right, but perhaps partially so. fasting is a process where we deny ourselves the very things we desire so as to seek Him. these things might range from food to the activities we engage in, even the words we choose to say. we might choose to fast from judgment, to seek first to understand, to listen before we jump to conclusions. for some of us who might have a repertoire of unhealthy words, be it negative or swear words, a fast from these and an indulgence in God's Word can cleanse our minds and heart. God's Words in
Luke 6:45 (New King James Version) says:

"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks."

lets spend some time to examine our heart, to "And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139:24)

some of us might totally abstain from both water and food for a given period of time. there is no right or wrong in terms of the criteria of a fast, such that a total abstinence from all food and drinks is more acceptable than a water only fast. but instead God looks at our hearts. God's Word says in 1 Samuel 16:7 (New International Version, ©2010) that

"The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

lets take a moment to examine our hearts to see if our reasons for fasting is acceptable to Him.

in our lives we have many different things that vie for our attention. these things might be bad things, urgent things, important things, and even good things. we might have our work, friends, people, and even ministry that struggles to 'dethrone' God in our lives. God is very clear about idols and He writes in Exodus 20:4-6 (New International Version, ©2010) that

"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

lets lay down our idols and look to Him, and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10 (New International Version, ©2010)), for He will be exalted among the nations and in the earth.

for some of us, fasting a whole day, or days at a row, is not possible due to health reasons or lifestyle demands. some might find the one meal fast more suitable for it means taking the time during of of our meals to pray and seek God rather than having our meal. the hunger we experience from the one meal abstinence will remind us throughout the day to pray and seek Him. at the end of the day, it really is our heart that He seeks.
