For Those "Party Animals" Out There.... Another Chance for a Party!

One of my favorite occasions or events when I was a biology major studying at the University of Guam, was the annual UOG Marine Laboratory halloween party. It was a major party... yes, there was always excellent food (potluck, Guam-style!), usually excellent location (aka warm, perhaps a gentle breeze, outdoor in a beach-side/tropical setting), and, of course, with costumes! And the students and friends of the Marine Lab always excelled with creativity with their costumes! Since many of the Marine Lab students were graduate students, quite a few had families... with kids ranging from babies, toddlers, all the way through to teenagers--so our costumes had to be somewhat tame so that they wouldn't freak out the little kids or be inappropriate for the older kids.

Many times, our costumes would relate to what we were studying for our projects--either in the biology department or at the marine laboratory. This Squidoo lens should give you some ideas for your own great costume party! (If you have a tropical setting/location, you could combine your costume party ideas with that for a Tropical Luau Party... and really make it a bash to remember!)

If you are going to have a party like what we used to have at the UOG Marine Laboratory, you'll need to do some planning -- Project Planning.

Consider:

These parties (although you can have a costume party whenever you really like having one), usually happen around October--and close to or on Halloween night.

So, if you are wanting to have the party, you should start thinking about it perhaps in July (August, September, October.... yup... about three months lead time to get everything arranged).

Set the date in July and start kicking around ideas for the location (institutional facility, backyard, park?), theme (if you're planning on having one), food set-up (catering, pot-luck, both?), furniture (tables, chairs, coolers, etc.), kid activities (if you're having families with kids showing up), maybe a costume awards lineup (funniest, prettiest, ugliest, scariest, dumbest, most obscure, overall best/grand prize), pumpkin carving contest, music (DJ, participation by guests, band?), activities/games (dunking for apples, pinata, sherades, water-balloon-toss, and so on.

Send out the invitations for the party no later than mid-September... because you need to give your guests time to cook up their costumes--and maybe come up with creative foods, if this will be a pot-luck event.

Depending on the complexity of your costumes, you might want to start on them at least a month in advance, if not earlier.. to give you enough time to cook up something really good!

Want to Make Your Own Costume? --Sometimes It Takes a Plan! (Part 1)

I've been to a lot of costume parties --yeah, most of them during Halloween season... so, I've got some real experience to share here.

Okay... let's say you want to make your own costume. How to start?

Kick Around Some Ideas
Check various sites for ideas, use some of your experiences to come up with ideas, maybe you have hobbies or interests that suggest ideas. There are ideas here that can give you some "starters" for your own concept.

Sketch Out Potential Candidates
On some paper (Graph paper is also good, because it can help you with "dimensions" later), sketch out your ideas... include a figure to represent yourself ... if you aren't much of an artist, at least use a "stick-figure" to show where the head, arms, legs would go in the costume.

Decide on a Costume
Consider how much work it will take to create this costume... some will be more involved than others. How much time do you have available to create this costume. What materials are you considering for creating this costume.

Want to Make Your Own Costume? --Sometimes It Takes a Plan! (Part 2)

Make a "Prototype" - Small Model
If your costume looks like it might take some major construction, find a similar material from which you can make a smaller version of your intended costume. You may find ways to improve on the design or construction (and you will find ways that don't work, as well--sparing you the misery of screwing up the main attraction).

Start Building the Costume
Whatever materials you choose, make sure you take into account how long it takes for glue to set, paint to dry, fabric to cut and sew, and basic other assembly tasks (your prototype version should give you some clues on this). If you have a spare room in your house or a vacant place in your garage or patio--use this place to do the work. If you have to pack your project up between work sessions, the set-up and take-down time will wear you out and make the task more of a pain in the butt.

Consider if Your Costume Requires Painting or Sloppy Work
If your costume requires painting or something like paper mache', make sure you have a handy place where you can take your costume outside for the paint and/or paper mache' --otherwise, it can make a real mess for cleaning up in your house or garage.

Do a "Trial Run" Wearing of the Costume Before the Party
Once the paper mache' has dried, the paint has dried, the glue has set... put the costume on and walk around a bit with it in your backyard and/or house. This is the time you can make "fine adjustments" to make sure that you can see adequately and walk adequately. Be aware that sometimes your costume may be so tall to get tangled in ceiling fans, laundry clotheslines, volleyball nets, low-hanging branches of trees, and other obstacles. Checking your costume before the party will help to eliminate many of these problems.

Of course... Get Pictures of Your Masterpiece--Either at Home or At the Party!
It's always cool to have pictures of your handicraft... who knows, maybe it will lead to a job with Hollywood as a makeup or special effects artist! (Hello? Any studio reps out there? I'm available!)

Next to Cleaning Out Your Closet, Cardboard is Handy for Halloween Costumes!

For this costume, cardboard came in handy again. This particular year, I was studying deep-water shrimp at the Marine Laboratory. I drew out some sketches of what I thought could be a costume... then did some dumpster diving behind a grocery store and found some cardboard boxes that might be useful.

Again, I made a small "prototype" of the costume with some old file-folders before trying to make the full-size thing.

The cardboard was easy to cut with an X-Acto knife.. and I assembled the segments of the "carapace" and taped it with duck tape. After the whole contraption was assembled, I spray painted the thing bright orange (what one of these shrimps looks like when cooked!).

Two toilet-paper rolls (painted orange) became the shrimp's "eyestalks"... two ping-pong balls made black using a permanent marker became the "eyes" at the end of the stalks.

Unfortunately, that night was a bit rainy... and the underside of the costume got wet and disintegrated before I could get a picture of the whole thing. The "antenae" pulled out from the top of the carapace as well.... And then, to make matters worse, I walked under a clothesline (couldn't see it in the dark and with the costume on) and bent up the "rostrum" (nose) of the costume. Bummer. But I *did* get a picture of me and my date for "historical records"!

(My partner had never been to a Halloween costume party before.. so I dug through my closet and scrounged up the pancho and old boonie hat for her. She was somewhat amused... but just didn't get it.)

Side note to this story: The following Monday, I needed to get to the bank to cash a paycheck... and I was standing in line minding my own business... and this lady came up to me and said "Hey! You were the SHRIMP at the Halloween party the other night!" .... The whole crowd at the bank turned around and stared at her and me. (Yeah, I'm sort of short, but geeeeze... did ya have to make a big point about it at the bank?)... When she realized what she had said, her face got all red and she humbly apologized... by that time, I was laughing... She did think the costume was good and amusing... and I bet she'll never forget the aftermath experience either!
