A Handmade Christmas 2011

A collection of handmade projects for you.

Handmade is huge right now, as more and more people share projects they have created on blogs, and web sites such as Martha Stewart Living and Better Homes and Gardens.

To me it is nothing new, I have been creating since I was a child and especially at Christmas time. This is the season for crafting or diy projects I enjoy the most. I also make at least one handmade gift for everyone.

I have put together a collection of fun and unique projects to help you with your handmade fun for this November and December, and am revamping this lens from December 2010, with all new projects.

Time is running out, so let's get started.

Fun and Whimsical Felt Christmas Trees

The very creative people at Joggles.com have done it again. Last years trees are still wonderful too, but I am really loving what Barbara designed for this year. I am a white Shabby Chic girl so I especially love the white tree and will be making some for sure. They do look great and easy to sew in wool felt, but I am thinking they would look great made from muslin or even a nice print fabric.

You can find full instructions and patterns HERE, or view the video below , and if you are interested there are now kits for sale to make the trees at Joggles.com

Gift bags made from paper bags

and stitched on the machine

santa ornamentThis is a really easy project to make fun little gift bags for Christmas.
All you need are some paper bags, which can be any colour but mine happened to be the regular brown kraft lunch bags, some old sheet music , old book paper and a few bits and pieces.

You can find the tutorial HERE

I also made some ornaments out of brown kraft paper. Just draw a sketch on doubled up paper and stitch directly on to your drawing, adding a teeny piece of stuffing before you finish all the stitching, they are so cute.

Wooden Spool Christmas Tree

soooo cute

I thought this was really cute, a tree made from wooden spools. I think it would make a nice craft day project to work on together with the children too. You can buy a bag of wooden spools at your local craft shop, or maybe you have some old ones already in your stash. Some pretty papers, glue and buttons and there you have it.

Visit Steph at Silver Boxes for the instructions and a great blog experience.

Create some pretty ornaments.

Have more spools? You can make really pretty ornaments with them such as the ones shown here.

All you need are wooden spools, fabric or paper a few beads and some wire. Create them in your own style, maybe you like the traditional colours that Terry from Terry's Treasures used here, or use colours that match your style or the colours you like to use on your tree.

Easy to make felt ornaments

Do you have a lot of buttons in your craft supplies? I have hundreds and I can't seem to part with them, so I decided to use some on these cute heart ornaments and I really love the way they turned out.

They are so simple, and here is how you can make your own.

Cute out a small heart shape on paper, any size you prefer. Using your paper template cut out two pieces of wool felt.
Stitch on one heart shape some buttons. I decided to go all red on this one.
Find some ribbon or twine to hand with and slip it between your top and bottom piece.
Start hand stitching around the heart with embroidery thread. I did a back stitch but you can do whatever you prefer.
Once you have stitched everything but an inch or so, put a small amount of stuffing inside and finish stitching.
That's it !

Will you be going handmade this holiday?

Upcycle your empty toilet rolls

into beautiful Christmas gift ornaments.

Yes, this beautifully wrapped gift started with an empty toilet tissue roll.

Marilyn from The Artsy Girl Connection created these little gift ornaments for her family and inside has included her own handwritten notes to each recipient along with some candy and other goodies.

I think the note is my favourite part of this ornament, and I have already started making these for my own loved ones.

To see how they are created , and find all the instructions with lots of beautiful photographs at The Artsy Girl Connection.

Christmas Subway Art

to decorate your home

Subway art is very popular in the DIY blogging world, and I really like this one created by Nike who works on vinyl and sells her art at Creations by Heidi.

But wait, she also is offering us a freebie that we can print on paper or card stock and frame ourselves to make a lovely piece of Christmas wall art, or table art.

Available in a 5x7 print in red or white as shown below, you can find it at the Choose To Thrive Blog

Christmas Tree Decor using old books

I love this idea, using up old books and repurposing them is one of my favourite ways to create.
All you need to make these trees is an old book or you could use a magazine, some glue and something to stand them on such as the candle holders used here.

Want to give it a try? You can find the tutorial by Sue at Creative "Try"als .

I hopped over from Poutine's Easy to Make Crafts lens. I love the ideas here.
I made a new page on my blog for handmade in 2012. It has a linky to add urls to. If you wouldn't mind, and have the time, I would love for you to add the link to this lens as well as any of the other hand made lenses you have as well. I want 2012 to be majority hand made gifts.
