How To Grow A Kitchen Garden

Your Kitchen Garden

Are you thinking about creating a Kitchen Garden and perhaps wondering how you can create one even in a small garden space.

As we have discovered there is nothing quite like being able to eat food which you have grown yourself!

There are lots of benefits to gardening. We have found that planting and maintaining a vegetable garden gives us fresh food to eat and enjoy during the summer and early fall.

We can then preserve the extras we have grown so that we can eat them throughout the winter. If you have kids, then getting them involved in gardening is both a fun and educational experience for them.

Some people mistakenly believe that you need lots of land to be able to plant a garden. However, even with a small yard, you can plant a small Kitchen Garden and to be honest you can even plant some of your favorite vegetables in a large pot.

How To Make Your Kitchen Garden

When it comes to creating your own Kitchen Garden these are the first steps you need to take:

1. Firstly you need to decide on a space for your garden. Ideally, it should be an area that gets something in the region of eight hours of sun every day. It also needs to have at least six square feet of space for actually planting in. Ideally it should be relatively close to the kitchen so that you can get to it easily for both maintenance and also when the time comes for harvesting.

2. If you plan planting in the ground, then you will need to ensure that you till the soil. If you intend planting in a container, then you will need to use a lighter weight soil and can look at packaged potting soil which you should easily be able to obtain from your local garden center.

3. Plan out your garden. If you spend time planning your Kitchen Garden carefully then you will get far more from it than if you simply throw it together. You can plant your early season crops first then your midseason crops once your first harvest has taken place. Then you can plant your late season crops once you have harvested your mid season crops. You will find that most seed packets carry instructions as to when you should plant and harvest.

4. You need to think about how tall everything will grow. Make sure that you plant things which you know will be the tallest in the center of your garden, or the back if your Kitchen Garden plot is located against a wall. In that way they will not shade the shorter ones.

5. Do make sure that you pay attention to how far apart everything should be planted. You will find that some will need several feet of space between them, whilst others may only require a few inches between them. The best thing to do is to draw a diagram of your Kitchen Garden space to scale on graph paper and then plan out where you intend planting each of your crops.

6. Now you have reached the point where you can start planting!. Make sure that you have a decent set of gardening tools and then you are all ready to start to enjoy creating your kitchen garden.

Maintaining Your Kitchen Garden

Make sure that you water your plants each day or as frequently as the instructions tell you.

You will find that Kitchen Gardens planted in containers will tend to dry out quite quickly.

So it maybe that you need to water then twice a day especially if they get a lot of sunlight. Keep watering until water runs out of the drainage holes.

Make sure that you try to fertilize your garden about once every two to three weeks.

But do be aware that if you over fertilize you could damage or even kill the plants! So make sure to read directions carefully.

Nice lense, I enjoyed reading it.
I have herbs in a couple of containers and have been snipping them pretty regularly. Fresh herbs are great to have at the ready.

Spring is coming! (technically I guess it's here, even tho we still have snow) I can't wait to get out into my garden...bring on the sun!

The snow is slowly melting, and I am starting to think about gardening! After too many years of feeling overwhelmed with putting in a big garden (and not getting it done), I think I finally have realized that smaller would be more manageable for me.
