Not Your Ordinary Love Story~ Justin & Christa
This story is not going to be your average love story. This is a story of great pain, sickness, tolerance, patience, hope, faith, and triumph. Meet Justin and Christa, a couple that has grown stronger through very trying circumstances.
Meet Justin and Christa

Justin was just your average typical guy, working on his carpentry apprenticeship. He loved boating and motor biking.
Christa was a young lady who was working towards finishing up BIble School in New Zealand. Then something went wrong and she became very sick. After three months of dealing with symptoms of headaches, body pain, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, night sweats, night terrors, and a rapid heart beat of over 200 beats per minute, she was hospitalized for two weeks. She had several MRIs, blood tests, and even a spinal tap, but the tests didn't show what was wrong and she had no answers.
Christas parents flew out to New Zealand to fly home with her back to Canada. A couple months later she was trying to get into the Mayo clinic to try to get some answers. On this day she met Justin. They spent the day talking about everything. And a romance was born.
New Zealand and and Christa health deteriorates
Christa had experienced a couple good months where it seemed like she might be improving. Justin and Christa planned to go back to New Zealand. Christa could continue her Bible School and Justin could work on some carpentry at the school. They had some good times, visiting the beach, dirt biking, spending good quality time with eachother.

Then, the symptoms started coming back. She started experiencing debilitating pain again, and suffered an ovarian cyst rupture. She started having to miss lectures and activities.
They decided it would be better to return home. They left New Zealand knowing they had met great friends, and had made some great memories they would remember forever.
Their days bounced between our great happy times and the scary times where her symptoms got really bad and would flare our of control.

We' re Engaged!

On April 12th, 2008 Christa and Justin got engaged! They went to Calgary to ski and celebrate! That didn't go as planned when Justin fell after showing off for his new fiance. Justin suffered a seperated shoulder. But life went on and they continued to plan their big day.

They didn't know what was in store for them, as Christa continued to suffer terrible headaches and unexplained body pain. All they knew is they were in love and living life together and happy.

You are now "Man and Wife"
August 16th, 2008

On August 16th, 2008 Justin and Christa got married. It was a beautiful day. But Christa was in a lot of pain. She had to take a lot of painkillers just to make it through the day. But she is strong and she did.

Off they went to California for their honeymoon!

They went on a whale watching trip but the boat got stuck due to a storm, for hours at sea. That night Christa'a body collapsed. Several times they debated on going to the Emergency Room or not.
Eventually they went home to try to continue on with their life.

We Are Not Our Disease!
Yes, we are sick, but that doesn't mean we have to lose ourselves.
New House

They continues their new life together. Christa's symptoms would come and go. Sometimes hour by hour. They noticed they were getting consistently worse. After many trips to the ER they still had no answers. How could she be so sick but nothing show up on tests?
Christa would lay in bed and scream from the pain at night. They would sleep in different rooms so Justin could sleep so he was able to still get up and go to work in the morning. But hearing his new bride screaming in pain was relentless. There were many times it got so bad, that Christa would pass out from the pain.
Justin would walk the halls at night trying to think of something to help his young bride. There has to be answers.
In November, 17 months after Christa first got sick, they moved into the in laws house so they could take shifts taking care of Christa.

Christa was so brave. On days she would feel good she would cook or make crafts for others. But the pain would always come back.
Dr Visits
Still No Anwers

In Mid-November they finally had a Dr appointment that seemed like it may be hopeful. They drove to Vancouver to a specialist. But after waiting all that time, over a year, the top neurologist they waited to see, still had no answers. They saw more specialists, no one had answers. On the trip back from Vancouver, Christa's symptoms got really bad and Justin had to keep pulling over so she could throw up on the side of the road. And if that was bad enough an Elk ran out in front of them on the way home and they totalled their car.

When they got back, Justin decided he had to quit work being a carpenter. He had to stay home full time to take care of Christa, things had gotten so bad. Christa also quit her job teaching special needs kids and had to drop our of college. It had gotten so bad that Justin was having to carry her in and out of her class and she had started passing out in the hallway.

At this point they were really overwhelmed. They had to pretty much drop out of everything. Christa also suffered a miscarriage at this point.
Christa would rate her pain on a 1-10 scale. She never gave up. When her pain would go under a six, she would work on her little business she had making cards.

They came across a doctor in Calgary that treated people with symptoms like Christa's. So they gave it a shot. She was put on a bunch of meds. She got yet another MRI but results were inconclusive.

But things just kept getting worse.
She was still up screaming all night from unbearable pain. He'd stay up with her almost every night, he'd make her food at 4am or do whatever it was she needed. Many times she would throw up all night long. Despite so much unbearable suffering and pain they chose to stay in love. And every once in awhile Christa would have a good moment and they could spend enjoyable time together. There would be a couple surprise times where Christa would have some good days.
Justin started taking a real estate course. He needed some distraction.

Christa did not respond well to the treatment in Calvary and even went into full body paralysis. They decided to stop treatment and move back to Vernon. This was Christa's 22nd month of sickness. Christa was passing out from pain on an average of ten times a day.
In May of 2009, Christa's dad came across a magazine article that talked about Lyme Disease. Out of 75 symptoms associated with Lyme Disease, Christa had at last 60. They both were so exhausted. They waited on the Lyme test results. Finally they came in.

After 25 months of not having answers they thought they finally had one! They soon found out there was no help in Canada for Lyme Disease however. They traveled to Seattle to see a top specialist for Lyme. As Justin was driving Christa was next to him having seizures and passing out.
July 2009 Christa started antibiotics to start the fight against the spirochetes that were in her body that cause Lyme Disease. Things did not go easy. Christa was still up all night in severe pain. Justin sat with her night after night.
They were determined to stay in love through all of this and would find little ways to let eachother know how much they loved eachother. They would do little things like fill the refrigerator with love notes.

They made it to their one year anniversary!

February 2010 Christa starts to have some good days. She experiences about three weeks of low level pain. She enjoys cooking for her husband again and working on her crafts again. It has been over a year since she has had a break in pain levels. She continues her Lyme treatment.
Pain Free for Three Weeks
Then The Pain Returns

Justin tries different distractions for Christa. He buys her a kitten. Christa would continue to distract herself on days she was well enough by making cards for people. She would also reach out to others online to encourage them.

Through all of this, Christa and Justins parents stand by their children. Can you even imagine the heartbreak of watching your kids go through this? Their parents did all they could. Chipping in for vacations so the kids could get away, letting them stay with them so Christa had someone to sit up with her.
After a long hospital stay the hospital put in a permanent IV line, so that Christa could inject her own meds at home.

Justin says his faith has been redefined and rebuilt through this experience. He says, "The Bible is his blueprint. It never promises us we won't have suffering."

Justin continues taking Christa to many dr appointments. They are determined to beat this disease. Many many waiting rooms, and doctors, and a Naturopath.

Doctors Stop Lyme Treatment

July 2010, Christa's ID doctor decides to stop treatment because Christa is not responding to it after three weeks. This throws them out of the system and leaves them on their own to find care. Christa feels abandoned by her own doctors. Unfortunately with Lyme, this is an all too familiar story. Christa continues through her journey of pain, throwing up nightly, with Justin by her side.
Justin and Christa celebrate their two year anniversary. For about two hours she was able to celebrate.
Christa is mainly trapped in bed due to her pain. For days on end she doens't even leave her bedroom. She just throws up, has seizures, and passes out from tremendous pain. All Justin can do is sit there and try to comfort her.
Then in the Fall of 2010 they found a new doctor right in Vernon. This brings hope.
As you read this lens, please say a prayer for all who suffer from Lyme Disease and other co-infections.

Month 44

After twelve months on oral antibiotics, six months or iv antibiotics, Christa was still not improving so they decided to dig even deeper to try to find a solution. In early December they came across a Lab named Fry Labs. They decided to order a full blood panel to see what would show up.
The Lyme test came back negative, so they had the picc line removed. But there was a positive on a protozoa called FL1953. It is a malarial like parasite that needs a different kind of treatment then Lyme. Treatment for this protozoa involves a no-fat diet to starve the "film' and and anti-malarial medicine to kill the parasite.
After starting the treatment however, Christa began to develop severe abdominal pain. This pain led to her 15th trip to the ER in the last couple years. It was not to be her last trip. Apparently the last year and a half on antibiotics lead to her having C Diff. So she had to stop the treatment for the Protozoa and go on different antibiotics to fight the C Diff.
After a couple rough battles with C Diff, Christa was finally able to start the antibiotics to fight the Protozoa FL 1953 again. The no fat diet took it's toll on Christa however, giving her symptoms of dementia, which lasted about seven weeks.
The 18th ER Trip~ Losing Hope
Then getting it back.

Month #50 into Christa's illness they still were not seeing any improvement so her doctor wanted to add in one more medicine. They added in a powder that helps bind toxins together and help you pass them out your body.
1 in 5 people cannot get rid of toxins on their own. Toxins come from infections and exposure to chemicals or molds.
About three weeks after Christa started the powder, she began getting better. By about six weeks, she was 50% better. She even planned a surprise birthday party for Justin!

She continues to get better.
Many people don't know about
Biotoxin Illness. It can mimic the infection you are trying to kill when the toxins are trapped in your body.
Justin and Christa are on their way to finally being able to enjoy their marriage. Justin has even started working at a normal job for the first time in three years.
They also celebrated their third Wedding Anniversary. They are renting a condo, and they are starting a new life. Through this all neither one ever gave up their faith. The path is not over, Christa has a long way to go, but it is a new beginning on the way to healing.
Christa's LLND

Christa says her LLMDND has always been amazing and has never given up on her even though he said, despite having treated hundreds of people around the world, Christa truly was his most complex, most horrifying case, he just kept searching, and seeking any info from other docs around the globe etc and attending seminars. He never gave up!

- Hey, some great news! I have a young friend, a teenager. When we met her she was in a wheel chair. It's been a long few years and she is walking again, but it has been undiagnosed Lymes disease. They knew, but the doctors were not in agreement. They finally found a doctor who did correct diagnosis and she is almost in remission now. It's a difficult disease to deal with, as doctors can be less than helpful sometimes.

To endure so many years of such severe pain, fighting through it and coming out on the other side, living in faith and helping others who may be going through similar situations. This video has changed the way I look at my life...this life is so precious and we should fight for it and live every day to the fullest! Maybe we all need that reminder every now and then. Blessed!

- I was already misty but the rainbow got me...its a promise! Christa and Justin are the sweetest of the sweet and made even sweeter on this journey. Let's all think again when we think we're having a bad day. A ton of scriptures have swirled through my thoughts as I've read along and will share the one that goes something like this, "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man what God has laid up for those who love him and are called according to His purpose." Blessed.

- Christa and Justin - My husband has suffered from lyme disease and coinfections for more than two years and possibly since 2007. We have a good lyme doctor but the struggles and pain are so intense it is terrifying. But God brings us through each day and some days are good days and some are bad days. It is encouraging to see that there can be improvement and look forward to that day. Pray you continue to heal.

- Hi Justin and Christa, I also have Chronic Neurological Lyme Disease and have been battling it for around 7 years. My husband as well as family members help out a lot! I am very sick as well and I just started seeing a doctor in Redwood City California, he is very well known and is one of the top doctors on the west coast. I highly recommend him. I have seen many doctors who have put me on all kinds of antibiotics and herbal remedies and yet I still suffer from short term memory loss, extreme pain which is now pretty much gone because I am on the Fentanyl Patch which as been a miracle for pain. I have double vision, headaches, shakiness, loss of the ability to walk, I been in a wheelchair steady for over a year now and before that I use a cane and crutches when I'm not too wobbly, along with many other symptoms. This disease is horrible and I'm so happy to hear that you have so many people that are supporting you. You need a support system to get through everyday! I would love to talk more with you both if you'd like. I too have a video of what I've been going through as well. My email address is charity.mcgill@gmail.com. I have tried many things that have helped my symptoms as well as wasted money on scam type systems. I too am from Canada and many people come down to Redwood City to see this doctor because he is so good. If you'd like his name and more information please feel free to email me. It's nice to have other people to talk to that know what you are going through. I will pray for you. Take Care.

- You have done a huge service by sharing your story. I have a family member who went through a similar experience with Lyme's but not nearly as horrendous as yours. You are both very brave and inspirational. Blessings.

- I hope this story spreads throughout Canada and opens the door for diagnosis and treatment of others who suffer from TBDs but are dismissed because these illnesses "don't exist in Canada".
This story came to my facebook page - and so I read it. Whoa, sad stuff, I thought, and considered bailing out. But I stuck with the narrative until suddenly I realized that Christa's story was all too familiar. At least the sick part - not the supportive family part. I have Lyme and Babesiosis (a protozoa). As I read your story, I could feel what was being described (except for the loving support of family).
So at the end of it all, my first thought was how wonderful your husband and parents are to care for you in spite of the difficulties. To believe that you were ill with Something - and not finding reasons to blame you for your condition. I know that TBDs are not validated in Canada, especially Lyme. So I also ended with great respect for your doctor.
But after all that - my thoughts turn to what Christa lived through and still found reasons to enjoy life. Even if it was in minutes and not days. I live in my minutes and sometimes they stretch into a day or two.
And Justin - I can't find the words to describe how incredible he is to see through the pain and debility to the heart of the person he loved. And then to stay with her, to help her, even when she was barely present.
So at the end, I'm glad I read your story as it gave me hope that others who share this journey can find someone to diagnose and treat their illness(es). And maybe it will help husbands and other family members validate and accept one of their family who has these overwhelmingly complex symptoms without a definition.

- Christa and Justin, could you share the name of the LLMD who helped you pls? We live in Vancouver and i desperately need to find a good doctor for my sister who has had Lyme for 10+ years and all treatments so far have failed. Kudos to you both for hanging in and making this journey together.

- Way to keep love the center of your marriage, despite massive difficulties. Your commitment to each other is incredible. My husband and I went through a fraction of this when I injured my back and could find no answers for the pain. Jeff was with me through every treatment: multiple surgeries, injections, medicines, etc. I even became addicted to Oxycontin and he saw me through the horror of it. I wish you both nothing but quality time together and many more beautiful rainbows!

- May God always bless you and keep you both in His loving arms. I have Ankylosing spondylitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis (from the base of my skull to my toes) and I also pass out and convulse from uncontrollable and unimaginable pain. With that said, I am SO SO SO truly blessed!!! God saw fit to bless me with an amazing husband who loves me so deeply that he gets frustrated only because he can not bare my pain for me, He also blessed me with 5 fantastic kiddos. I can only pray that our Father in heaven will continue to send down his Holy Messenger to carry and protect you through all your future endeavors in life!

- OMG.... I watched the whole video, all 1 hour, 14 minutes of it. I don't think I have ever seen a person in so much pain. That poor girl. My heart was breaking for them both. What a wonderful husband she has there with her. So happy that she is now on the road to recovery finally!! I think I would have given up along time ago. They really do have such great strength and FAITH.

- I just read your story and I am so sorry that you had to endure all that but am VERY happy to hear that Justin stuck by you through it all. I hope you are feeling better and enjoying your life with Justin. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and it took FOUR years of doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I was in hell. Constant severe pain. I almost died while in a fever coma due to neutropenia following an allergic reaction to a heavy duty antibiotic that they put in on through a PICC line. I still am in severe pain and sickness every day as my doctors and I are trying to find a medication to treat my symptoms. There is no cure yet. I have hope. God Bless you and keep you!! Keep the faith!

- Christa, I have Chronic Lyme's so I understand your pain, fear, frustrations, and struggles. You are very blessed to have Justin as your husband. You both are standing in the "for better or worse, in sickness and in health" part of your marriage. Trust in the Lord. I would suggest you keep looking for a Lyme Literate Doctor. From my experience going through series of medications does help. Avoid super high doses as it can mess with your stomach, liver, and kidneys. When I had my PICC line my CD57 (lyme test) scores were at their best. I had to have my line removed due to infection. Know that you are not alone. I'm praying for you.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes we did. The "binding powder" is Cholestyramine. It is not an infection killer, only a biotoxin remover. For more info on the science and research behind it: www.survivingmold.com God bless.

- Justin and Christa's story is so very precious and you are definitely one couple I would love to connect personally with.
My first thought was, can I clone this man! Justin, no one knows what it is like for the caregiver to love sacrificially, but to be driven by such a love. You are so on fire for the Lord and there to support your beautiful wife every second of the day. You understood the needed partnership with Christa's family so that she could live!
Christa, you are such a strong woman of God, an amazing fighter and I pray you continue to run your race in your fight with Lyme and any co-infections you have, thankfully pushed into remission!!!
I know exactly what you have and continue to go through in the battle. Yours is the closest story to mine that we have seen yet. I can personally can relate to the intensity of your pain. Most of the scenes were to close to home.
Singing through the pain when possible or singing when even slight waves of relief from the pain, reading scripture, trusting sight unseen -yet suffering...I know how much you depend on the Lord for His mercy and comfort and His help to pull you through.
Through this though, I appreciated your cry out to the Lord and your continually seeking him. It is truly the only way!
I smiled when I heard a Josh Groban song was playing in the background on one of your good days. I see we both run to the same inspiration on rough days. There is something healing in his voice that sings with passion, pain, and strength with faith as the solid ground.
I hope everyone who crosses this story and video takes the time to view it.
I pray knowing that God will continue to help guide you and bring healing in all the ways that you now need. And I hope for the day we can meet. In Christ, HeatherRose

- I cried a few times watching this part of your life. Mostly for what you have gone though and some for myself also living with undignosed lyme for 5 years. I am no where as sick as you were but I do live most of my days in bed with fatigue and pain. I am not able to have a life. Before I got sick I remarried (I lost my first husband of 14 years from cancer) We were married three years before he left me. He was nowhere near the man you are Justin. He is alot like most of the doctors and friends that we met. Its sad but true. I have also run into the same thing with family. They get sick of you being sick. The illness, pain and fatigue is only part of the terrible incounters. I am so happy that you have finally gotten answers and even more so that you are on the path to recovery. Thank you for sharing this with others.

- Christa and Justin. I truly understand the hardships you both have been through. I have late stage lyme as well. I've had it since I was treated (unsuccesfully) 20+ years ago. I was fortunate to only experience what would be "close" to the suffering you had for several months, not years. Misdiagnosed with R-Arthritis for a yr, I was treated on IV for 3 wks. The pain and flu like symtoms went away but the lyme slowly penetrated my central nervous system, causing serious nerve problems, emotional disturbance and neurological disorders that plagued my life since. We are fortunate to have found the help we needed. Marriage has been a rough road, especially for the 6 years we didn't know what was wrong. I wish you both all the best and a healthy future for your cherished marriage. We are waiting for the same thing!

- PLEASE will you ttext me the name of this powder that you took to get rid of the biotoxins? I am desperate for help. I have had active, chronic Lyme since I was about 25 and I am soon a very young (but feel old) 52. I know this is a ridiculously long period of time, but I can't get over the Lyme. I have babesia as well. Dr's this I have been bitten a MINIMUM of 5-6 times and I carry multiple strains as well as babesia. I just threw up on our bed while I was reading your story. I need your help. I am too sick to check my e-mail on a regular basis, but you could text me at 814-823-7703 or friend me on Facebook and send me a message there. If you do not have those means avbailable to you, and I don't hear from you on one, I will check my e-mail. I just usually can't keep up with it as I get a massive volume. Thanks so much for helping me if yoiu do. If you don't, I would appreciate your prayers. You will be in mine. I have brain damage from Lyme, and a damaged heart and a heart implant. I am scared that I will die very young as it is a real possibility because of my heart. Tonight I am suffering from fever, sweats, severe headache, nausea, and vomiting. I can barely stand to be alive. My husband is upset with me because I threw up. He isn't as caring of me and as understanding as in your situation. Sad, but true. Congratulations on your happy marriage and your remission. I pray that you will stay healthy and happy. You have a touching and heartwarming story. God bless!! Thank you Karen Reichter (on Facebook my date of birth is March 21 and my hometown is Embarrass Minnesota) (US) Again, thanks. I appreciate this so very much. I am struggling as only you and other Lymies understand.... (e-mail is nmnrangergirl@yahoo.com)

- Karen, the powder is likely Cholestyramine. It's used to bind cholesterol in the GI tract. But, it is also recommended to bind the die-off toxins that make us so much sicker when killing the lyme/tick bacteria's (this keeps them from re-absorbing into our bodies). I am also from MN! So sorry you are having such a hard time! I get it! I will email you.
Wheresthekarma, This is a lovely story! Thank you for sharing it. It gives us, who have such similar uphill battles with Lyme/Co-infections, some hope! May He bless you, Justin, for being His Hands & Feet to Christa in her times of need. May the Lord bless you, Christa, with continued healing and hope!
