A Pre-Shot Routine......What's That?

This is a series of moves which helps you assume the correct address position and posture every time you stand to the ball. If you need convincing of the importance of the address position, study professionals in action and see how meticulous they are in this area. They are aware that no matter how well the gun is firing it must be pointing in the right direction for the bullet to hit its mark. It is essential that you also develop your own pre-shot routine, ideally based on the following six principles.

Master These Six Principles for a Lower Golf Handicap

1) Ensure that you tee up the ball correctly and at the right height for the shot you are to play.

2) Now stand behind the ball and carefully observe the layout of the hole and determine where would be the best place for the ball to end up. Visualise the shot you want to play. This helps you focus your mind at the task at hand while fixing the target line in your head.
This is a highly important part of the routine and will enable your mind and body to prepare for the shot ahead.

3) Make a couple of practice swings. The swing you practice should be the same one that you plan to execute when hitting the ball. This gives your body a feel of the swing and helps to improve your execution of the stroke through muscle memory.

4) Now align the clubface square to the target line by identifying an intermediate target just in front of you, such as an old divot mark or a leaf. It is easier to aim the clubface at a close target than at an object some 200 yards distant.

5) Secure your hands comfortably on the grip and then build your stance around the clubface. Focus on achieving a good posture and keep your knees bent while bending forward from the hips. Try to get everything as square to the bottom edge of the clubface as possible; that is, in perfect parallel alignment. Remember, your body alignment determines the path along which the clubhead is swung, and is crucial to a good shot.

6) Once you're set, waggle the clubhead back and forth a couple of times to ease the tension in your hands, arms and shoulders. This relaxation promotes fluidity of movement. Provided your posture is also good, you are now in great shape to swing the club correctly away from the ball.
