The best line ever:

Sometimes I am a poorly monkey, and my CPAP helps me to breathe all night long while I sleep. It helps me to sleep soundly and dream about bananas.

If you need to use a CPAP or a ventilator machine it is natural to worry about your children's reaction.

Will they be upset if they see you with a mask on your face?
What will they think about the hose hanging from it?

This book was written specially for families like yours.
It aims to show that the machine is just a useful gadget that some people need to make life easier for them.

Perhaps you have a special needs child who uses CPAP themselves but is not confident with the mask? Help to overcome their reluctance by showing them that they have a machine just like the monkey in the story!

Our hero, Rufus the Chatty Chimp, loves bananas and eats them all the time.
He has lots of interesting things in his home, including his CPAP and its mask which help him when he's poorly.

Rufus invites the reader to look around his home as he describes all the things he uses each day.

His CPAP is just one of those useful every-day things.

He likes it, it is part of his usual bed-time routine, and he is shown wearing the mask and sleeping soundly.

Read the book with your child and discuss each item as it appears - the CPAP is just another one of these normal things.

Encourage your child to get involved with the story by searching for the mouse that is hiding about the house.

You'll also spot the cat who joins in the fun too!

Together, you and your children can look at the book, and talk about how each gadget helps us.
Bring up the subject of your own respiratory equipment, without any undue emphasis.

You'll be able to say what the mask is, and how it helps you to keep well and happy at home.

Perhaps you can discuss other people your family knows who also use medical aids -
'Billy's Daddy has his leg in plaster, Granny needs a walking stick, Sarah's Mummy uses a wheelchair, and I have my ventilator!'

A patient recalls,
"I remember being worried what my daughter would think when she saw me with this 'thing' on my face.
We decided to just say that it is Mummy's ventilator.
It helps Mummy while she is sleeping, and hopefully it will help her stay well so she doesn't have to go back into hospital."

Rufus says, "This is my favourite banana song."

What is CPAP? Mechanical Respiratory Support while you sleep

Photo copyright J Bilner 2011

CPAP machineCPAP equipment - pronounced Cee-Pap - is used to treat breathing problems such as sleep apnea - Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

It's also used for infants whose lungs have not yet fully developed, or for children who have respiratory distress and special needs.

A CPAP machine, (Continuous Positive Airways Pressure), pumps ambient air, under pressure, via a hose and mask, into the patient's nose.

The air gently inflates the throat and holds open the relaxed muscles of the patient's airways, preventing them from collapsing during sleep.

It allows the patient to breathe normally and can help reduce or eliminate snoring.
