Animal Lovers

I don't even think one has to qualify as an animal lover to be moved to tears by seeing a starving, homeless animal digging through garbage cans. Or, to see a tiny kitten following it's mother through the snow in the dead of winter searching for shelter. These wonderful creatures did not ask to come into the world and yet here they are, mostly shunned by people who are far too busy with other things to notice.

When challenged by Rocket Moms to create a charity lens, I had no idea what I would create a lens on. That is until I read the information for PAWS Animal Kingdom. What a wonderful organization and a wonderful dream they have. It is one I would like to be a part of and I hope that after reading this lens, you will too.

What is PAWS Animal Kingdom?

An animal Utopia

The first stage of the plan for Paws Animal Kingdom is to purchase 100 plus acres of land which will become a sanctuary for homeless animals. From there, they plan to build more animal kingdoms throughout the country so there can be a safe haven, no kill place where abandoned and homeless animals can live out their lives.

They are trying to establish a network of volunteers across the nation to help them realize their dream. Of course, donations are always welcomed too. They currently support a trap, neuter and release program that will also eventually reach across the country. They offer programs to help educate people on how to help support a no kill plan as opposed to one which kills those for which no home can be found.

What Paws does now

Programs and projects

These are some of the wonderful things Paws Animal Kingdom is doing right now to help animals and pet owners:

  • PAWS MEALS ON WHEELS - WE BRING PET FOOD TO PEOPLE WHO CAN'T AFFORD IT, OR SIMPLY CANT GET TO THE STORE TO PICK IT UP. THIS PROGRAM IS AIMED AT HELPING SENIORS, DISABLED INDIVIDUALS, AND ANYONE WHO CAN NOT AFFORD TO FEED THEIR ANIMALS. CALL US IF WE CAN HELP YOU.

  • PAWS SPAY AND NEUTER PROGRAM - WE WILL SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR ANIMAL FOR FREE IF YOU QUALIFY. WE CAN ALWAYS DO IT AT A VERY LOW COST IF NOT FOR FREE. SPAYING AND NEUTERING OUR PETS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ACTION WE AS ANIMAL LOVERS CAN TAKE TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PETS WITHOUT HOMES.

  • PAWS-A-DISSECTION - THIS PROGRAM IS AIMED AT NOT JUST PAUSING DISSECTION OF ANIMALS, BUT ENDING IT OUTRIGHT. THROUGH EDUCATION, WE AIM SHOW HOW THIS OUTDATED PRACTICE IS NO LONGER NECESSARY UTILIZING TODAYS TECHNOLOGY. WE FOCUS OUR EDUCATION ON HIGH SCHOOLS THAT PROMOTE DISSECTION IN SCIENCE CLASSES. WE ENCOURAGE ALL STUDENTS TO SAY NO TO DISSECTION. "The animals of the planet are in desperate peril. Without free animal life I believe we lose the spiritual equivalent of oxygen." - Alice Walker

These are only a few of the programs that are underway. It truly is geared toward the needs of the animals. Imagine it; little patches of land where all homeless and abandoned animals can life out there lives without starvation, without braving the elements and without fear of being killed.

My Feral Family

I've adopted them

Until recently, it was illegal (according to the Humane Society) to feed or give shelter to feral families of cats. Now you can obtain a license which allows you to not only feed and care for the animals but also to try to trap them for the TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program. I know the feral cats in my neighborhood very well. I've watched as a mama will arrive in the alley with 2 or 3 kittens but by the end of the winter there may only be one left. I leave food out for them and I try to build some sort of shelter for them when it is particularly cold or snowing. There also is a garage across the alley that has gone unused for some time now and many of the cats have their kittens in there. At least it is shelter.

I have lived here long enough that I now see the 5th and 6th generation of feral cats. I see the dominant male and how he chooses which females to mate and which to kill or chase off. Actually, there is only one male that I have seen kill several other cats and I keep hoping another male will run him off. I have come to care about these cats even though most of them do not trust me. They do not trust any human.

I'm sure in your neighborhood there is a feral family. Although many of them go unnoticed, there are tens of thousands of feral cats and cat societies in the United States. Paws Animal Kingdom wants to help these creatures as much as they possibly can. Won't you help be a part of the dream? Give to Paws Animal Kingdom today or check into their volunteer programs.

I'd love to have your feedback
