All the research and photos that you did for this lens were certainly worth it. I was captivated by your swallowtail butterfly tale. Beautifully done.

Great lens, glad you gave me the link. We do not have that butterfly in New Zealand, but I can understand how you felt about it, as we were the same watching those Monarch Butterflies. Thanks for sharing it is a wonderful experience to go through, new life.
    Have a nice day.

Great photos and videos to document your caterpillars and resulting butterfly. My sister used to raise some butterflies for her 4-H entomology project. This was quite informative and fun reading. Blessed by a Squid Angel and will be featured on The Best Insect Pages on Squidoo.

I had a bunch of all green caterpillars on my tomatoes this spring - ate half the plant similar looking to your parsley - don't know if they became butterflies - all I know is they were well fed suckers - I figured they ate until they exploded :) The tomato plant was practically a two foot tall 'stem' system. I hope it was butterflies and now I know to pay more attention next year!

Yes, several years a go my sons and I found a group of what turned out to be Mourning Cloak caterpillars feeding on a small willow tree and did something similar. So exciting to see them hatch. Great lens!

Back again and lensrolling. Your videos are wonderful! And the caterpillars are just amazing. I too learned about Black Swallowtails after finding them in my parsley!

Thanks for your story. My grandaon, age 3 and I have been catching and releasing butterflys all summer. Two days ago I captured a black swallow caterpillar, I'm not sure if it will mature this summer or not,we live in Maine. Your story gave me hope.

I found 2 of these lovely little guys in with my carrots at the end of harvest last year.. right around Aug 10th. One JUST emerged this morning. He is Beautiful! I know what you mean though... with the both of them over-wintering I thought they were dead. LOL Now I can't wait to see the next one. Hopefully soon!!

OMG! Love this lens!! My husband and I experienced a Luna Moth manifestation while we were homesteading, and it was the most fantastic journey EVER! This luna butterfly was so inspiring that I painted it on some handmade totes I made for a gallery. I know the excitement you had watching this process. "Blessed by a SquidAngel"

Hi! I'm so glad to hear your finally came out. I have three swallowtail chrysalises in a habitat that I thought would have emerged by now. The first has been a chrysalis for over 3 weeks, the last about two. I'm still a little worried they died as we are in Houston and it is not exactly wintry here. But I will give them more time. Hope I get a happy ending, too!

How exciting! We found one of those caterpillars on our parsley just a couple of weeks ago and then identified that it was a black swallowtail and put it in our netted bug box. We fed him fresh parsley every day and yesterday he disappeared into his cacoon! I stumbled on your site while trying to find out how long he will be in there. We can't wait but it sounds like we may need to wait all winter! YIKES! I hope we can keep him alive that long! Thanks for your wonderful story and amazing pictures!
  • clouda9 Sep 21, 2009 @ 5:24 pm | delete
Wonderful story and pictures! So what's a little nibble or two from your parsley to have been able to experience this.

We've raised a ton of caterpillars with our homeschool studies. Monarchs, black swallowtails like you have here, Great Leopard Moths, furcula etc. etc. Watching one come out of chrysalis never fails to amaze me. Only God can so such things. 5*'s great lens with a personal touch.

Great pictures. I'm raising 5 parsley worms at the moment. They are just about ready to go into their chrysalis stage. Hopefully they will emerge in about 2 weeks. I can't wait.

Beautiful lens! We haven't raised caterpillars; but my husband is a bug-guy, so we're very familiar with bugs--almost intimate-LOL. Anyway, thanks for a great Lens!

Hi there. Thanks for visiting my Infinite God lens and your lovely comments. When I was a teenager I once raised emperor moths. I found the eggs on a windowsill near a dead moth and looked up what they ate. They were wonderful. I had several become cocoons and one that hatched and flew away. What a wonderful experience as I'm sure you have also found it to be. 5 stars

Exquisite photos! We used to raise silk worms and we had tons of Mulberry trees because that's all they would eat. Such neat little critters. Great lens. Thanks for sharing! I look forward to seeing more of your lenses through the Rocket Moms. Have a great day!

I'm watching every day to see if our little friend is ready to break out of his cocoon ... I hope I can film it. If not, I'll at least get a snapshot before he leaves us.
  • alteredkat Jun 10, 2009 @ 6:58 am | delete
Great lens! I love the pics! Hope there's a follow up pic of him hatching...if you've ever seen a butterfly emerge from it's cocoon it's amazing!

Thanks for popping into my depression glass lens...your collection sounds interesting!

Very original, and a story well-told! I battle with caterpillars every year, both here in Spain and in England where I come from. If I find them, I never kill them - just relocate! I love seeing butterflies in the garden.
    5*
