A Dedication to Mothers

This lens is a tribute to mothers and the contribution they give to their children's lives. Through their nurturing love, they help us to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. They set us on the right path and are always there to give us guidance when we lose our way. They give their children a strong foundation in life by providing them with a loving and safe environment in which to grow enabling them to discover their unique talents, believe in themselves, face life's challenges, and care about others.

The Mother

By Gwendolyn Brooks

All the Gifts You've Given to Me

You gave me love when I first drew breath...
You nourished my body and soul.
You gave me the gift to believe in myself,
helping me become the unique person I am.
You gave me an understanding of the value of life...
a desire to share my special talents with others
and to love others with the love you
so generously bestowed on me...
and I will leave this world a better place
for having made a difference.

Mothers Help to Create A More Humane World

They Give Us the Capacity to Show Empathy for Others

Mothers and childrenThrough the example that they set in their unwavering love for us, they in turn give us the capacity to share our love and gifts with others. Thus their uniquely significant role in raising happy and productive children who have empathy for the lives of others has profound effects in helping to create a more civilized world where we recognize the value of others' lives and have compassion for all sentient beings.

A Poem About the Mother and Child Bond Which Lasts a Lifetime and Even Beyond...

Auguste Reading to Her Daughter by Mary Cassatt

A Mother's Love

She holds a mirror to what we can be
and helps to cultivate
what others may not see...
helping her children to succeed.

As she binds wounds
wiping the tears as they fall...
with her words she nurtures our souls
as deftly as she mends torn clothes.

She gives us a sense of the magic about life
and that the secret of happiness
is to follow our hearts...
and have faith in our dreams.

She gives us the freedom to find our own path
but guidance when we go astray,
and with the insight of new wisdom
to know we are going the right way.

We learn the importance of honor
and the virtues of loyalty and truth
as she reminds us never to abandon our values
in a meaningless chase of material pursuit.

She teaches us how to build character
as we learn from our mistakes,
and from the midst of our sorrow
to have hope for a brighter tomorrow.

We learn from her example
how to handle strife...
and the importance of forgiveness
as we go along in our life.

When tested to our endurance,
she reminds us of a larger purpose
as we learn from her example
that we have sufficient strength.

She inspires us with her words,
empowers with her faith in us,
and gives us the capacity to love others
with the love she's given us.

I see her face through tears
when I was first a child
learning to face my fears,
and an illuminating light for all these years...

She will remain my truest friend
until the very end
and even beyond...

A Poem About How Mothers Nurture A Promising Life

The Family by Mary Cassatt

Mother and Children by Mary Cassatt

A Mother's Loving Heart

With alchemist's power,
she transforms base metal into gold
as she sees gifts
that others may be unable to behold.

She values each and every child
for she knows best their individual worth,
giving them the power to believe-
holding a vision of what they might be.

And for one cast aside by others,
just as an object of art
spared by a collector from a pile of scrap-
she sees its beauty in the rough.
With special care,
she lends a loving hand
to bring forth beauty anew...
so that others may see it too.

She doesn't accept the judgement of others
which may be flawed;
but instead through a mother's insight,
spares a radiant light from being dimmed
and a soul from being imprisoned.

And nurturing this promising life
with both love and guiding light...
so with its true nature unthwarted
may give rise to glorious bloom.

A Mother's Day poem

A Rose for You, Mother

A Rose for You, Mother

I remember when I was a little girl
if I had my feelings hurt,
you gave me a rose
and said,
"this rose is a symbol for all the
love I have for you...
and for your family who loves you too."

I remember when I lost a music contest,
you gave me a rose
and said,
"this is for all your effort
and the next time you'll do better.
Look at this lovely rose...
remember, it took awhile before it became
such a beautiful flower."

If I brought a report card home
that was a disappointment to me...
you said,
"The enjoyment of learning
is far more important
as it will help improve your grades,
and has greater impact in determining
what we can do...
learning doesn't just end with school.

Think of this rose
to remind you that
life has its ups and downs...
and you will have your days
when sunshine abounds."

As a symbol of the magic
of your love and the wisdom
you gave me to fulfill my dreams,
I now present this rose to you
on Mother's Day
as a beloved token of these memories
that I will always cherish,
and of the love I'll always have for you.

The Importance of Spending Quality Time With your Children

Mother and Child in the Park by August Macke

Spend quality time with your children. It is so important for their minds, bodies, and spirits. Reading a book to them, going to the park, playing with them, making bread or brownies, drawing a picture or making a holiday craft together, going for a nature hike, a dog walk, to a museum, a concert, or telling them a story; all of these are wonderful ways to spend time with them. Try to do one of these activites everyday or at least two or three times weekly if you can't do them each day. But, you can at least spend some time talking daily to your children to see how they are doing and to show them how important their lives are to you. Try to spend some separate time with each of your children, if you have more than one, to develop a strong bond with each and get to know them as unique individuals. And remember, give them a hug everyday and tell them you love them before they go to school and go to bed.

Reading to your child every day when they are young, even starting as babies, will cultivate a life long love of reading, and help them aquire the necessary language and writing skills that they need to have to do well not only in school but in life.

Encourage their intellectual growth by taking them to the library, showing a keen interest in their education, helping them with their homework if they need you, and encouraging their participation in the arts, the sciences, and extracurricular activities. Encourage your children to set goals for themselves and being supportive of them in trying to achieve them despite setbacks. They will learn the value of persistence and with your steadfast belief in them, they will eventually succeed.

Instead of comparing your children with others, give your children the emotional support they need to discover their own special gifts and talents. As mothers, we play a vital role in helping our children develop the necessary feelings of self-worth and the coping skills they need psychologically to face life's challenges and overcome adversity. We also help our children develop their unique potential, the skills they need to interact with others, and to find their own niche in society which will bring them happiness and fulfillment. And we contribute significantly by our own example to our children becoming good parents themselves and thus helping to forge future generations to be the leaders, visionaries, and innovators we need in an ever changing, dynamic world. Wow, what an awesome and amazing gift it is to be a mother!

Take the Time to Make Beautiful Memories with Your Child

A Poetry Book That is A Tribute to The Memories I Cherish with My Daughter

Mother and Child Reading by Frederick Warren Freer

As a person who always loved nature, I would take my daughter on nature hikes when she was just a little girl. She would love to talk about all the interesting and lovely sights there were. Often times, we would bring along sketch pads and crayons so as to forever capture these beautiful moments. Then we would come home and read about some of the animals and plants we saw, and we would proudly display her drawings up in her bedroom. Because she loved ladybugs so much, I decided to write a poetry book about ladybugs and how they could teach us to treasure life's magical moments.

A Poetry Book for Mothers and Children to Share

"This is a magical book of poetry for children and adults about ladybugs who teach us to celebrate our lives, to be in touch with our hearts, and to be happy with who we are. Whether it be a poem about a little ladybug who enjoys having tea with her friends and finds contentment with life's simple joys, a poem about a child who visits an enchanting town of ladybugs, another about a ballerina as she recalls her childhood and a ladybug who inspired her to become a dancer, or a poem that expresses the importance of being free to follow our dreams; each one is a little gem about a ladybug who has something to say about happiness and the precious gift of life. The lovely imagery of the poems is accompanied by illustrations that are as richly imagined and lovingly rendered as the words of each poem." Editorial Review

"A simply inspiring collection of poems that honors mothers all over the world for the contribution they give to their children and to the world around us in raising children who can live purposeful lives, enrich the world with their special gifts, and have the capacity to care about the lives of others.

This is a book that any mother would love receiving for Mother's Day or as a present for any occasion as a cherished keepsake of the special bond that they will forever share with their children. The beautiful artwork featured in the book by Mary Cassatt is a great choice by the poet as the touching illustrations enhance the heartfelt messages of the poetry." Editorial Review

This lens reminds us all of the importance of mothers and the nurturing role they play in their children's lives. The message that mothers can make the world a better place for all, by raising children who can care about the lives of others because they have been loved and cared for, is a very signifcant one. I feel the other point that the author has made about how mothers effect the psychological health of their children by helping them to develop feelings of self-worth does indeed have a profound impact on their children's lives. By giving children the confidence they need, our children won't be afraid to accept new challenges which can help them to discover their unique gifts and the perseverance necessary to develop these gifts. This is what enables them to find their niche in society and ultimately find fullfillment and happiness in their work.

This is such a powerful, beautiful, and emotional lens. I love the paintings by Mary Cassatt. What a great, tasteful choice by the author. The poems are beautifully written and so thoughtful. Many lines brought tears to my eyes, and I remember growing up and having such wonderful memories with my mother. This author clearly should give parenting classes! If all mothers were as loving and encouraging as these profound words describe, we would all be better off. "A Mother's Loving Heart" was a poem I particularly enjoyed - as I thought the author's description of love was so accurate and deep. This lens also reminds us to spend time with our children as they grow up so fast!

To celebrate Mother's Day once a year seems far too infrequent and this lens "A Tribute to a Mother's Love" by Marie Lawrence makes this ever so apparent. The motherly love that Ms. Lawrence describes here provides the nurturing warmth that is the foundation of a child's self concept, feelings of self-worth, and is essential in living a happy and rewarding life.

The quotes and beautiful works of art by Mary Cassatt and others made me smile while Marie's poetry was so touching, it brought tears to my eyes.

Mothers do help create a more humane world by giving us the capacity to show empathy for others and for that alone, we owe a measure of gratitude. For me, I wish to show gratitude to you Ms. Lawrence for creating such a heartfelt tribute to mothers.
