He once retrieved someone's dentures from the bottom of the river and was awarded with a generous $10 dollar tip.

He was promoted to First Lieutenant of the Provisional Task Force Show Unit in 1943 at Burbank, California and then returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit for another promotion to Captain in July, 1943.

The "Gipper"

The great depression was no stranger to Reagan as he sought work after college and eventually landed a sport's announcer job at a radio station in Davenport, Iowa. He was well-liked and earned a position at a Des Moines, Iowa radio station called "WHO." His job for WHO brought him to California to cover the Cub's spring training, which sparked an interest in the California acting life. He took a screen test that landed him a seven-year contract with Warner Brothers Studios.

Reagan spent the first few years acting in B films with other actors often overshadowing him, but eventually he gained a role that brought him fame and a new nickname "the Gipper." He played the college football star George Gipp in the movie "Knute Rockne--All American." During his acting career he met and married actress, Jane Wyman, with whom he had a daughter and adopted a son. Another child died during infancy. The marriage lasted eight years before Wyman and Reagan divorced in 1948.

Ronald's interest in movies waned as his movie opportunities diminished, but he did meet actress, Nancy Davis, and they married in 1952 and had two children. Reagan soon turned to television and landed a job as the half-hour show host for "General Electric Theater." His strong anti-communist views were expressed along with the sales pitches for G.E. products. With his growing fame, G.E. encouraged him to go on personal appearance tours which gave him an outlet for his love of free speech.

Family Life With Ronald Reagan

For the Love of Nancy and Children

Ronald Reagan had a deep love for Nancy and he called her "mommy" and she called him "Ronnie." They had two children, Patti and Ron and spent precious family time with the children. They both had a passion for life and he loved his life on the homestead ranch. Friends described the couple as real, close and intimate with each other and they would often display their affection for each other as though they never stopped courting. There was great respect in their relationship and Ronald Reagan once wrote to her " whatever I treasure and enjoy....all would be without meaning if I didn't have you." Nancy slept with one of his shirts to be comforted by his scent, when he had to go in the hospital in 1981. He told U.S. citizens in a letter that he wished he could spare her from the pain of his Alzheimer's disease, but she responded with the fact that they were very much in love and that her life began with Ronnie and could not imagine it without him. They were a true love story that never ended.

Political Career of Ronald Reagan

From California Governor to United States President

Reagan started out as a liberal Democrat but lost respect for the party and formally switched to the Republican Party in 1962, making this statement "I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the party left me." He went on to become the governor of California from 1967 to 1975 and made sweeping changes like freezing government hiring and approved tax hikes to balance out the budget. He signed an abortion bill in 1967 and later voiced his regrets and made a strong pro-life stand throughout the rest of his political career. He also was a strong supporter of capital punishment but the California Supreme Court overruled his efforts to enforce state laws in this area. It was later overturned by a constitutional amendment. Ronald Reagan believed government should be kept small and that concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty. His days as governor of California ended in 1975, when Jerry Brown succeeded him.

In November 1980, Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter and became the nation's 40th president. Many viewed this victory as a new beginning as Republicans also took control of the senate. A failed assassination attempt on President Reagan in 1981, wounded him and brought him close to death during surgery. He was the first United States President to survive being shot in an assassination attempt and this only boosted public support for him even more. Reagan stressed his personal beliefs during his two terms of presidency and said "government is not the solution to our problems, government is the problem." He also believed that freedom prospers when religion is vibrant and the rule under God is acknowledged. Ronald Reagan was re-elected in 1984 in a landslide of wins in 49 out of 50 states. Although he had some health problems later in life, He served our country well right up until the end of his second term as president in 1989. He left with the message of government being responsible to protect the people, not run their lives.

Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 1994 at the age of 83 and told the public this through a handwritten letter.

"I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease... At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done.. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead. Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you."

The disease progressed noticeably over the years, but he was still able to recognize his beloved Nancy and take walks through nearby parks and on beaches, as well as playing golf regularly. At 89 years of age, Ronald Reagan fell and broke his hip which was repaired, but he endured painful therapy at home after that. He lived in quiet isolation during his Alzheimer days and Nancy allowed few visitors as she felt that her husband would want people to remember him as he once was.
