Choosing Colors and Accessories to Create a Tuscan Kitchen

A Tuscan kitchen is rustic, warm and inviting with a color palette that takes its cues from nature: warm reds, browns, oranges and yellows from the earth and the sun, along with cool blues and olive greens from the trees and the sky.

Here are a few suggestions for bringing the colors and design of Italy's Tuscany region into your kitchen.

The Tuscany region encompasses an area of approximately 8,875 square miles and has a population of 3.7 million people. The area is famous for its wines and culinary traditions, and is a popular destination amongst tourists.

I currently have a Tuscan theme in my apartment - so while I can do a lot with accessories, tableware and wall art, I'm limited to other design aspects. The colors I chose are best represented in this great mousepad design I found at Zazzle - it actually matches the red/yellow/green combo I have!

Design Elements

Rustic touches for a Tuscan Kitchen

In the opening paragraph I discussed the color palette, but I do want to say that most designers will agree that a true Tuscan kitchen or dining area has warm white or cream walls - the traditional color of an Italian farmhouse (which is where the inspiration for a Tuscan kitchen comes from.)

The decor is rustic - think plank wood tables, solid chairs with rush or straw seats, and ornate features of copper, wrought iron, antiqued brass and pewter. Floors are terra cotta, stone or even rush matting.

Tuscan Designs for Your Table

Olives, grapes and rolling hills are popular themes in Tuscan inspired tableware. Here are three examples of lovely tableware items that feature one of these motives and of course, the beautiful color palette of Tuscany. Click on any image to go to the product listing.

Tuscan Inspired Servingware

These serving platters are bold and beautiful! They're also an easy way to build around all the colors and designs. A rule of thumb for picking the right colors is to pick ONE item (like a serving platter or a wall hanging) that has at 3-4 of the colors in your palette and use it to match the others.

Cooking Utensils and Kitchenware

All of these items can be easily incorporated into a Tuscan kitchen. If red isn't your favorite color, think of building more from the golden yellow or sage-to-olive greens.

On the Counter and Stove

Both the red mixer and the copper cooking set can be incorporated into a Tuscan kitchen, making it not only vibrant and warm, but highly functional and inviting for cooks and guests alike.

The flavor of a cuisine depends on the ingredients, the chef, and their grade.
To quite an extent, it also relies upon the kind of ambiance in which it is made.

When I see a Tuscan kitchen, I always think the owner must be an excellent cook and I automatically start hoping for a dinner invite. :)
