A Year of Doodles

Learn Your Personal Symbolism By Doodling
Inside each of us we carry thousands of symbols. This is our personal symbol vocabulary and no two humans are alike. Art is good therapy and doodling cuts us free from the rigors of how it should be done. There is no right or wrong way to doodle. Go bold, go big, or go soft and delicate. It's up to you. You can doodle on a train, in a crowd, with your kids, with your grand kids, in a park, or just about anywhere you can smuggle a writing implement and a surface to write upon.
Day 2 of 365
A Doodle Painting
Why limit yourself to just pen and ink. Here I used crayons and opaque watercolor.
Robot Clock
This was fun. Maybe he'll show up in one of my paintings someday.
Maid Marion

After seeing a play with a beautiful redhead singing and playing the part of Maid Marion, I had to doodle her up.
Dancer

I'm making four paintings with dancers so I wanted to doodle up some new ones. Here is one doodle that I already turned into a painting.
Dancer Doodle
The Doodle the painting is based on. I didn't realize I doodled her over a palm tree background with the word dream under it. What a happy accident.
Hang on to your doodles. Document them on your computer or keep them on a file because you never know when they'll provide the inspiration for another project.
More Dancers
There will be 3 more paintings in the series that may or may not have dancers but I thought I should doodle up some new ones for inspiration.
Red Cat

Drawing cats is a lot of fun. And drawing them with a big red marker is even sillier. Keeping a stack of large index cards handy for doodling is working out really well for me.
Draw Your Favorite Tree
This Italian Cypress Tree has always been one of my favorites, every since I helped my father plant a bunch of them when we moved to Sunnymead CA when I was a kid.
Hub of Intersections

This started out as a doodle at a fast food place today. Then I remembered I had metallic pens and started coloring it in. I suppose I'll finish coloring it when I get around to it, but I think it's fascinating. Then again I'm easily amused. It's a lot more shiny in real life. Metallics don't scan all that well.
Valentine's Card

After I finished the Hub drawing above, I started drawing a valentine. I decided the hearts needed wings. Then I realized this drawing could be part of a 'make a valentine' article I'm writing. Metallic ink on red cardstock. Doodling on good paper with bold markers is a lot of fun. Don't limit yourself to pale gray pencils on newsprint.
