Quick Guide to Social Networking

Getting Connected in a Digital Age
Social networking is everywhere these days, from your web browser to your phone, game consoles, TV set, you name it. So lets dive in and see what all the buzz is about!
What is Social Networking?
You know, besides that movie from last year.

Picture if you will...
...an old-style telephone operator. You know, the woman sitting in front of the switchboards plugging and unplugging cables from one outlet to another to connect calls. Now imagine if that operator never unplugged the cable to switch it, but instead plugged in another cable. Now imagine that an operator exists for every person on a particular system. All those connections going off in real-time feeding data back to a single person in an organized stream. That's social networking.
But doesn't it get noisy?
Very much so. The art of managing your connections and contacts is something of an acquired skill. Luckily, a large number of networks, clients, and apps are available to help you out. After all, what good is having too much information if you can't make heads or tails of it?
So why use it?
What if you could get news reports in real-time instead of waiting for the 6 o'clock news to tell you? What if you could get support from a company directly as opposed to calling and dealing with the inevitable phone robot? What if you wanted to send pictures from your latest trip to all of your friends and family without sending a massive chain e-mail? The list of how you can use a formless communications medium approaches on the infinite.
Why use these services? Because they are there to be used. How you use them is up to you. Don't worry if you can't think of anything right now, we'll add in some suggestions later on.
Social Networking in Plain English
A short explanation of social websites and why they are popular.
Glossary of Terms
Getting the technical stuff out of the way first.
- 1App - Short for application. This usually refers to any program connected into a social network. It can be used interchangeably with "client" as they both fall under the same general use. We've all seen the commercials, and despite what you may think, there actually almost always is an app for that.
- 2Client - This term can be used interchangeably with "app". Generally refers to any program that lets you access a social network. An example would be Facebook for iPhone. It's a non-website application that lets you use the service.
- 3Feed - A general term referring to any sort of stream of data, usually composed of posts, news articles, or whatever content the originating site chooses to push out.
- 4Node - An organizational term for a group or individual connected into a network.
- 5Poke - A Facebook action to get someone's attention. It got used a lot more in the early days of the site, now it can be kind of an annoyance (like actual poking, use in moderation).
- 6Social Marketing - The use of social networks and media to promote your business, product, or yourself. This is a rather in-depth topic as social networking can be integrated at almost any level in a business.
- 7Social Media - Think social networking applied to pictures, videos, news articles, that sort of thing. Any situation revolving around media where users can interact with each other falls under this.
- 8Tweet - A post in Twitter.
- 9Wall - A user's profile stream in Facebook. Essentially the digital version of "writing on someone's wall."
- 10Web 2.0 - A term thrown around recklessly by a lot of people right around the time that social networks were just taking their first breaths. Turns out nobody actually knew what Web 2.0 was (though we've justified it's existence since then) and to this day it simply remains a buzz word referring to a more connected internet publisher / user dynamic.
Popular Social Networks
Most commonly used, broken down by type.

Most people generally pick and use a handful of networks, so with that in mind, it's time to dive right in and list out the best and biggest for each category. We'll start with the two biggest elephants in the room, Facebook and Twitter.
#1 Biggest Social Network on the Planet
Facebook started off as a way to connect students on college campuses and today it has evolved into something much much more. Keeping in touch with family, friends, co-workers and of course fellow students is still the major function but there are also thousands of apps available through the site as well as great media linking capabilities.
In the past couple years Facebook has also weaved itself into the web via the Like button, feed widget, and comment widget. These allow people on Facebook to connect with websites and vice-versa allowing for a much larger conversation on any topic.
This is the largest and most popular network on the planet, so if you're new to this, it's a great place to start.
Everything you can say in 140 characters or less.
Twitter is an interesting service in that it's a mainstream micro-blogging service where most people after asking what it is usually ask "What can you do with it?" As it turns out, just about anything. Twitter is used for all manner of communicating and it's no mistake that it bears large resemblance to text messaging as that's where the 140 character limit comes from.
Some people use this to keep up with the world as news tends to break faster on this service than many others. Retweet functionality allows one person to share another person's post instantly and beyond that there are quite a few clients and apps built around the platform.
Whereas Facebook apps are almost always built into the site to capitalize on sharable data, Twitter apps cover gaps in the platform itself. Need to shorten a link? There's a bunch of sites for that. Want to share pictures and videos? Additional services abound. Tired of the 140 limit? There are sites for that too. Twitter is the reason for the recent resurgence of short-linking on the web and that trend will no doubt continue on for quite some time.
Getting into Twitter is easy, finding new ways to use it is fun.
The Business Network
LinkedIn is smaller than the other two major networks, but it's important all the same because it connect business professionals. The interface can connect in the other services and LinkedIn itself can function as a both a social and business networking tool. Given the current state of the economy, it's no wonder the user base has grown substantially over the past few years.
This is a slightly more advanced network than Facebook or Twitter, but if you're comfortable with those, this one should be a piece of cake.
Google+
The New Network
Google+ Recently burst onto the scene as a brand new social network built from the ground-up re-represent social connections as circles and essentially make social networking simple again. It's still technically in beta, but Google has opened the doors to new users and there are always invites available to get in on the action.
The biggest part of G+ is that it's a social network built into Google's own platform. you can use your Google account with any number of services that you may already be using and then seamlessly switch over to G+ as needed. This is a step in the right direction for Google and it looks like they've learned a lot about the failures that were Buzz and Wave. High hopes for this one so far.

- Cool, you have a nice lens here and I find it quite interesting. Anyway, do you have a post about how to do social media marketing really effectively? Lots of people including me are searching for that topic in the internet and if you do have, then it would be very helpful to us plus it can drive traffic to your site. Thank you, surely I will be back to keep an eye for more of your post and hopefully also the one that I been looking for. Best Regards, Andrew.

- Well done, this lens gets in a lot of information without getting too lengthy or bogged down. Easily accessible for people who don't have as much experience with it, but not boring for someone like me who's on Facebook all the time (yipes! gotta work on that...)
