Aaliyah

Aaliyah, R&B Professional Singer ~ In her precious 22 years, Aaliyah achieved more than many do in several lifetimes. An illuminating factor was her conviction to touch and help others. When considering Aaliyah's track record, it's befitting that her name means "The highest, most exalted one, the best." Aaliyah Memorial Fund

A Glimpse of the Aaliyah Lifeline

Aaliyah biography, facts, and accomplishments.

Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 - August 25, 2001), best known as Aaliyah, was an American singer, dancer, model and actress. Introduced to audiences by R&B singer R. Kelly, Aaliyah became famous during the mid-1990s with several hit records from the songwriting/production team of Missy Elliott & Timbaland and their associate Steve "Static" Garrett. Aaliyah soon joined Timbaland's R&B and hip hop collective, the Superfriends Clique. She is notable for recording several Aaliyah Dana Haughtonhit records, including several number one R&B hits, a number one pop hit, and nine top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. She also modeled for Tommy Hilfiger and starred in two motion pictures before being killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas.

Aaliyah was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, on January 16, 1979 to Michael and Diane Haughton, and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. Her name means "Highest, Most Exalted, The Best" in Arabic language.[citation needed] Aaliyah was brought up as a Catholic with her older brother Rashad Haughton. Her grandmother, Mintis L. Hicks Hankerson, was of African American and Native American descent. Diane Haughton, Aaliyah's mother, also a vocalist, encouraged her daughter's career. Her uncle, Barry Hankerson, is a prominent individual in the music industry and Aaliyah's aunt by marriage is Gladys Knight, a legendary soul singer (Gladys Knight & the Pips). She appeared on the TV talent show Star Search at age ten, singing her mother's favorite song, "My Funny Valentine". Although she did not win, Aaliyah worked with an agent in New York and began to attend auditions for TV shows, including "Family Matters". Following her appearance on Star Search Aaliyah performed on stage in Las Vegas, Nevada with Gladys Knight. In her early teens, Aaliyah attended the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, and graduated as a Dance major with a 4.0 GPA. While I must admit to being partial to Walt Disney when it comes to animation and the soundtracks that accompany their films, ANASTASIA caught me by surprise. A classic tale, told in an uncomplicated way that children can follow easily, it's score and songs are a perfect compliment. "Once Upon a December" is a touching and beautiful song, worthy of it's "music box" box stature, and sung wonderfully by Liz Callaway and, while I'm no fan of country music, Deana Carter also delivers a fine version. "Journey to the Past " is another great song , performed by Liz Calloway as Anastaisia's singing voice and also by Aaliyah. The score itself is a wonderful mix of flavorsand influences, acknowledging the settings of both Russia and Paris . All in all, it's a wonderful CD, pleasing enough for children of all ages. Highly recommendable.

She has already jammed with Gladys Knight in Las Vegas, eloped with influential R&B mogul R. Kelly, and scored two platinum albums--and she's just barely graduated from high school. No, she is not your average teenager, nor is she just another pretty soul singer. On One in a Million, Aaliyah expands on the smooth grooves of her massively successful debut album Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, and shows that all the life experiences have not gone to waste. The production and songwriting talents of Tim 'Timbaland' Mosley and rapper Missy Elliot give the songs on One In A Million a seductive edge with laidback grooves and cool hip-hop licks; but what really makes this album rise above is the full-grown singer at the controls. On the title track, a magical ballad, Aaliyah casts a cool spell with layered voices and a smoky delivery. With the assistance of Slick Rick, she turns Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" into a funky hip-hop jam for the end of the millennium. While with "4 Page Letter," one of the album's high points, she intricately details the end of love affair. Artists twice her age could only hope to create a work of such clarity and resonance. --Aidin Vaziri

Pop history teaches that posthumous releases generally fall into one of two categories. There's the creep-out, with eerie lyrics that appear to foreshadow the artist's demise (see Michael Hutchence's solo disc). And there's the cash-in: the label or management scrapes the barrel to turn a buck. Luckily, Aaliyah's I Care 4 U is neither. Serving as both a greatest hits collection and a summary of stuff she'd been working on before her death in August 2001, the disc is a keen reminder of just how talented the 22-year-old was as a singer and song stylist. Sure, it's easy to have rhythm aplenty when R. Kelly and Timbaland are guiding you, but Aaliyah's silken phrasings are her own, and her ability to unearth tenderness in even the funkiest jam is a testament to her vision of R&B as musical comfort food. Songs from her three studio albums are well represented. Among them are "I Care 4 U" and "More Than a Woman" from Aaliyah; the title track and "Got to Give It Up" from One in a Million; and "Back and Forth" and "At Your Best" from Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. Of course, the universally praiseworthy brand-new tracks--"Come Over," "All I Need," "Miss You," and "Don't Worry"--are the real goods. An accompanying DVD featuring a handful of videos and behind-the-scenes footage makes I Care 4 U crucial for fans. --Kim Hughes

What an absolutd tragedy it was to lose her. She was just so beautiful and talented with a soul to match. It was doubly tragic because the cause of her plane going down was so preventable.

Aaliyah was one of the great ones. She wasn't vulgar, she always had a smile. She just seemed like an all around great person, or at least that is what everyone that knew her seemed to say. She as well as many other artists was taken from us way too soon. R.I.P. Aaliyah

She will always be remember. We miss u Liyah! She was so talented and young and had so much ahead of her to give to the world. She was such a beautiful person inside and out. Why did she had to die? I guess God wanted her to be with him.

I have loved her since I first heard her. I will always love her voice and only imagine how she would be today if she were here. She was and still is to me the greatest artist out there. I miss her so much but thank GOD she is at peace and looking down upon us all.
