Recording of Dancing Queen started in August 1975. It was inspired by George McCrae's 1974 disco classic Rock Your Baby. It was released in August 1976, and was instantly a huge wordwide hit. It was no. 1 for 14 weeks in Sweden, and 6 weeks in UK. Stig recalls "One day I found a note in my office with a telephone number on it. I gave it to Gorel and said 'Can you call them'. She replied 'It's not a telephone number, it's the latest sales figures for Dancing Queen in Britain'". Frida recalls "I loved the song from the very beginning. Coming back from the studio, Benny played the backing track to me. It was so beautiful that I started to cry. I mean, even without lyrics or voices on it, it was outstanding." Dancing Queen is Abba's best known song, and continues to fill dance floors the world over to this day. This performance is from the November 1978 Japan tv show "Abba Special". From Arrival album. Mamma mia! This cd is great! "Abba gold" has got all the greatest Abba songs on one cd. Their music has stood the test of time. This album was first released in 1994 and then in 2002 and another in 2004. This group made hit after hit! Even the slow songs sound great! Abba are still featured on play lists across the world.

My favorite songs on the cd are "Dancing queen", "Gimme! gimme! gimme!", "Money, money, money", "S.O.S", "Mamma mia", "Thank you for the music". "Waterloo" was Abba's first UK no.1 single. "Mamma mia" and "Super trouper" were also UK no.1 singles. "Fernando" reached no.1 in 12 countries. "The best of Abba" is still the biggest selling album (1.1 million) in Australia, spending 16 weeks at no.1 position.

"Money, money, money", "Knowing me, knowing you" and "Dancing queen" were all great hits. "Chiquitita", "Does your mother know" and "Angleeyes"(not on this cd) reached no lower than no.4 in the UK. "Gimme! gimme! gimme!" was known as a disco hit in Europe. "The winner takes it all" was also a chart topper! Erasure released an album, which copied Abba's songs. Abba hit back and released an album that copied Erasure's songs.

Abba's Top Songs

I began listening to ABBA when I was about 15 or so and just leaving school because obviously I had heard some of their songs on the radio and TV but somehow I came across an ABBA cassette and played it and then played it over and over. Musically and phonetically ABBA are one of my favorite groups of all time (which is why I am writing this).

ABBA for anyone who doesn't know are a Swedish group and started in the early 1970's. There are four members to the group, and it is from them (Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Faltskog) that the name ABBA originated in 1973 when they released their first album (Ring Ring). ABBA are mostly remembered for their winning the Eurovision Song contest in 1974 with the song Waterloo. After this they released their second album, also called Waterloo. Between 1974 and 1981 ABBA released several other albums (ABBA in 1975, Arrival in 1976, ABBA the album 1977, Voulez Vous in 1979, Super Trouper in 1980 and The Visitors in 1981) each having their own successful singles.

ABBA have toured many countries over the years (Germany, Denmark, Austria, Finland, Australia, UK, USA to name a few) and have become one of the most valuable exports to come from Sweden. The only group to come from Sweden and be more successful than ABBA have been Ace Of Bass (not many people know this but AOB have actually sold more albums worldwide than ABBA) and I will again get into AOB in a later post in more detail.

Musically ABBA have influenced so many bands who have come to follow and there have been massive amounts of ABBA covers by famous singers like Westlife (I Have A Dream), Madonna (Hung Up), Mike Oldfield (Arrival), Sid Vicious (Take A Chance On Me) and U2 (Dancing Queen). There have been several theater productions made over the years about ABBA, the most popular being Mamma Mia which still shows in the UK periodically.

I was too young to go and watch ABBA live but it would have been nice to see them perform, there are many DVD's of their music videos and performances available and a couple I would recommend are ABBA Gold, Super Troupers and ABBA Number Ones.
