Abbeys: Spiritual Places of Another Time
Many years ago, when castles protected the nobility, abbeys also dotted the countryside. These were impressive structures, and could easily have been used for defense, but generally even kings honored sanctuary. Armed forces would not enter sacred grounds, so abbeys were considered safe harbor.
Abbeys were home to clergy known as monks, who generally stayed within the walls praying and working. Since an abbey would normally be self sufficient, or nearly so, there was no need for most monks to leave.
Since many of the inhabitants were clergy, a church was an important feature of all abbeys.
