Daylight Saving Dates | Isn't it time to abolish Daylight Saving Time?

Reestablish Your Natural Biological Rhythms

Daylight Saving Time for the United States was voted in by the U.S. government during World War II (after an unsuccessful attempt earlier). It supposedly saves energy BUT this has never been proven. What it does create is more disharmony with our natural rhythms. Those rhythms connect us to the world instead of separate us from it. If this planet is going to have a sustainable future, then honoring our natural rhythms is extremely important in that shift.

Add your opinion and then check out the resources for adjusting your circadian rhythms and achieving better sleep.

NEW! Please check below for an important link to a new article about how our cells are "tuned" to the sun and how sleep disorders can arise when we get out of sync!

Isn't it time to abolish Daylight Saving Time?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Absolutely! Quit messing with my brain.

Alex says:

This stupidity should end.

Dan says:

Abolish it now!

Heather f says:

It doesn't make sense to do it. It does make sense that our govt enforces it. Probably spending millions of dollars on research and salaries for people to work on it.

M Mahoney says:

It is time to stop all this flip flopping.

viktor s says:

No time changes. I don't care if it is bad penny wise

Jim says:

Daylight Saving Time makes no sense. They say it saves energy, but after it was forced on the state of Indiana; a study proved that DST actually increased energy usage in effected areas. Not to mention the mountains of evidence that DST has adverse effects of health and well being. Write your congressmen and tell them to abolish this stupidity.

Govt Sucks says:

Yes! Make Daylight Saving Time standard year round....combining colder weather with darkness at 6 pm and all I want to do is go to bed when I get home from work. Most people who work would rather have it lighter in the evening vs. at 7 am

NAY says:

HELL YES. THIS MAKES NO SENSE TO BE MESSING WITH TIME. I CANT GET BACK THE HOUR THAT I AM "LOSING" OR "GAINING". IT IS REAL RIDICULOUS. AND FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO WORKS NIGHTS I NEVER GET PAID THAT EXTRA HOUR AT WORK WHEN WE SET THE CLOCKS BACK.

Sensible says:

Yes. Get rid of it. It makes little sense to extend the evening hours of light during the summer, when the days are already long. Changing the clocks disrupts circadian rhythms and gains us nothing. It's expensive, inconvenient, and it makes it harder to get up in the morning. How did so much of the world get forced into this in the first place?

OhMe says:

Yes, it is too hard to change my clock in my old car

Ener-G says:

Wow! Just came across a new study about how even our cells are dependent about the sun for circadian rhythms and when the rhythms get messed with, sleep disorders are a likely side effect.

Kebles says:

It takes several weeks for my mind and body to adjust to the change in time. The fact is, modern man has been messing with our time for some time, in the name if commerce, Time as we measure it today does not reflect true "Solar Time" either with, or without DST. There are tables, and even clocks and watches available that can measure what's known as "The Equation of Time", which reflects the difference between apparent solar time (sundial time) and mean solar time (clock time). This can vary as much as 14-16 minutes at noon. Google or Wiki this for more info, if you are interested.

Micah says:

Absolutely!

CatCat says:

FFS. YES.

Nikki says:

The cons outweigh the single pro, and even then I don't see it as much of a pro. In the summer, the sun doesn't set until after 8pm. Anyone who's out that late isn't out for the sunlight, so it doesn't really matter enough to disrupt our sleep cycles and make us adjust, particularly smaller children who don't understand why they have to go to bed an hour earlier.

dolly says:

Our bodies know when to sleep, when to eat and relax, everytime I feeling the need to relax, I end up realizing that yet again it time to start on another chore, since I have lost an hour and it is already that time to get started.. Stop this I need to relax...................

selena says:

Definitely, stop this craziness, and give me back my energy to enjoy the spring and summer, without feeling the lack of an hour.

Please stop this madness.

tom says:

why Arizona does not comply? For what reason and by whom was it not instigated?

Janet says:

Our inner clocks get 'messed' with every time we switch.
I wish we could keep regular time and NOT dst.
I hate it. UGH!!

Big D says:

Time for a change... Ha ha!

No way. We should trust what our government chooses for us.

Anonim says:

It's much better to stay on DST all year-round, rather than cancel DST.
Summer without DST will be catastrofical, because in this case sun will rise in the middle of the night and sunset will be early. If you don't like changing clocks we must stay on DST all year. In the winter days in this case will seems longer. And sunset will be at about 6 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. It's so depressing short days! I don't like December because sunset is too early!
Actually I don't mind cancel winter time. I think it's even good for health, because sun will set later. (I will rather prefer dark in the morning, than early sunset) BUT I AM TOTALLY AGAINST CANCELLING DST! Imagine what will be if in the summer sun will rise at 4 p.m.? It will severely damage my health.
I think it's unacceptable to cancel summer time. Thus it's much better to stay on DST all year round! (I think Russia made right decision on February 8 2011). Later sunset-better we feel! At night must be dark. Sun cannot rise too early. Winters are long and depressing. Also sun is setting too early. It will be better to have later sunset! So please consider DST all year for all provinces in Canada (like Regina)

Lisa says:

When I worked 2nd shift, it didn't matter because it was always light when I went to work and always dark when I left, and even then I loved daylight savings for that extra daylight on weekends. Now that I have a child in school and in after school activities, I love DST even more because it's actually light out when we get home. I'm with everyone rooting for daylight savings all year round. I don't care if it's dark out when I go to work - it's the hours outside of work that matter to me! Gov't has nothing to do with it.

ben says:

We should get rid of standard (winter) time and be on daylight (summer) time permanently.

I'd also point out that those who freak out about adjusting to an hour change make me laugh since I often travel between time zones 12 hours apart.

Its also important to note that a time change is more relevant for those in the north since it changes more throughout the year.

nomoredst says:

Austin Web Design, the problem is that DST doesn't improve the state of the planet because it doesn't save any energy.

Austin Web Design says:

We still need it. If you abolish it now, everyone is going to complain. Well, maybe not everyone, but many will. It's not about trusting or not trusting the government. It's about saving energy and doing what is best for this planet. We need to leave it in a better status than we found it.

Austin Web Design

pmolinero says:

I would not say to trust what the government chooses for us as these choices ar ein most cases not even worth a thought. But as do DST I am going with it. Without DST it would be dark around 5pm already this time of the year in Cyprus. As for me, we wouldn't need to switch back and keep the DST all throuhg the year.

Love DST says:

Without DST in NY, the sun would rise as early as 4:21am in the summer

DST All the time says:

Hey Susan, guess what. You'll be fired for being late to work...Ha!

DST All the time says:

DST Year round!!!!!

quit_belly_aching says:

"OMG, it takes me weeks for my body to adjust." Come on people, just enjoy the extra hour of daylight after work.

Wildman says:

Daylight Savings is great, I think we should move an extra hour ahead in summer.

blue22d says:

Maybe, I do enjoy the longer "light" days when we can have them. On the flip side, I don't like getting up to go to work when it is so dark outside. Can't have it all, I guess.

TopStyleTravel says:

No, I love daylight saving time. I thrive on sunshine. Some places like Alaska have very long daylight hours. Most people can adjust to it by making the best use of the time. Or close the dark drapes and stay inside.

Lorinda says:

I wish we would stay on daylight savings time all year long. I live in central New York and really hate when it is dark around 4pm. It gets so depressing and people definitely suffer mentally because of it. I would take the sun rising an hour later any day to be able to eat dinner while the sun is still up. I do not like that my only option to not abolishing DST is "No way. We should trust what our government chooses for us". How about an option that says "Make daylight savings time year-round"? Thanks!

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

Its not the farmers. They get up with the chickens and go to bed when the work is done. Its the golfers. They want enough daylight after work to shoot 18 holes of golf.

Seriously, daylight savings time saves energy. When you consider that, we should be on it year-round.

The_Homeopath says:

Well, the thing is, I think we should leave natural time (ha! "natural") alone in the summer, and go on double in the winter too give us a bit more sunlight in the evening. Where I live the sun sets at around 4:30 pm in the dead of winter and it's just so depressing coming home from work or school in the dark. I'd prefer to have it darker in the morning and not feel like the afternoon is really the night.

kab says:

I don't like the two choices you have given for answers. I do not think that Daylight Savings Time should be abolished. I like it. How spoiled are we as a society that having to change our clocks twice a year is such a huge inconvenience? But that doesn't mean I think that our government has always shown that they make good choices for us.

Ener-G says:

Why is it the government waits till war or creates a war to shove stuff down our throats that we don't want?

What Else Do You Think?

The Gregorian Calendar that we use also messes with our natural rhythms. I think we should switch to a 13 month moon calendar. What do you think (about that or anything else)?

I think the lunar calendar would be better, and it won't change. I think whatever time they arbitrarily impose should just be set once for the whole year so we would not have to deal with the change twice a year! It is hard on the body!

Some areas of the country don't do DST because it would mean the sun wouldn't set until around 10:00 pm. That wouldn't be good at all. Also, when we tried to use DST year around back in the 70s the sun didn't rise until 8 or 9 am in some areas. That's why we go back to standard time in winter. Our entire system of measuring time is pretty arbitrary anyway.

I've never been a fan of DST. There are so many other more effective ways to conserve. And the whole more daylight for farmers thing? Please.....they are up before daylight anyway. No matter which way we try to spin it, they will never be more than 24 hours in a day and the sun will shine when it feels like it. So far, we can't control either of those things so why do we pretend we can?

    Great lens and Angel Blessed!

I was "belly-aching" about the late DST again earlier this evening, so it was fun to read your MonkeyBrain lens :-) I'd still like to maintain the 12 month calendar, just because it's a more "harmonious" number than 13. Still, having a lunar calendar makes some sense too.

I think everybody thinks different about this and whatever decision is done, there will always be someone who doesn't like it. Actually the whole time zone thing is already not natural, as between the eastern and western border of a time zone are always 59 minutes, making the sun set at the eastern border, while it shine another hour on the western. Nothing is more depressive than getting dark at 4pm on a mid winter day, so better leave the DST.

I live in Arizona, where we don't do Daylight Savings Time anyway ... which is just fine with me. Actually, though, a big chunk of Arizona--the Navajo Reservation--does do DST, which can be pretty confusing for people passing through the rez.

Thanks for reminding me. The idea of DST is pretty interesting. It really doesn't save any money and actually, makes us spend more money on electricity (the original reason was to use less electricity). Eh, well whatever :)
