HERE'S WHAT I THINK
The death penalty should be abolished...
The death penalty is barbaric and belongs in the past. There is no evidence of the death penalty having any deterrent effect, life imprisonment without parole is just as effective a means of preventing re-offending, any system of capital punishment is bound to make mistakes, and who are we to take another human being's life in any case?
Most countries have got rid of it already. However, a few - including China, the US, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan - still regularly put people to death. They should join the civilised world and make the death penalty history.

BARE FACTS

As of 2009, fewer than 60 countries (less than a third of the total) actively retain the death penalty.
At least 8,864 people (and probably considerably more) were sentenced to death during 2008, and at the end of the year as many as 30,000 were on death row around the world - with the largest death row populations being in Pakistan (approximately 7500) and the USA (over 3000).
China carries out by far the greatest number of actual executions. While Amnesty International has confirmed at least 1718 executions there during 2008 the true figure is certain to be much higher. Estimates suggest the annual figure may have been as high as 7,500 in recent years - although this may have dropped back since the Supreme People's Court (SPC) replaced local courts in the appeals process.
Outside China, at least 670 people were put to death in 24 countries during 2008, down slightly from 2007 - with Iran (346+), Saudi Arabia (102+), Pakistan (36+), Iraq (34+) and the USA (37) the main contributors.
While murder is the most common crime to attract the death penalty - a wide range of other offences can also lead to execution.
However, more than 90 countries have outlawed the death penalty altogether, and more than two thirds of the world have abolished it either in law or in practice.
And at the end of 2008, the United Nations General Assembly passed the second resolution in 12 months calling for a worldwide moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards total abolition. While the resolution is non-binding, it was passed by an even larger majority than in 2007 (106 votes for and 46 against) and adds further momentum to the abolitionist movement.
FACT FOCUS

Bangladesh applies the death penalty for such crimes as murder, sedition and drug-trafficking. Bangladesh sentenced at least 185 people to death and executed five people in 2008, and there are more than 800 people on death row there.

THE ARGUMENTS
Opponents object to the death penalty on one or more of the following grounds: (i) killing someone is always wrong, and two wrongs can never make a right; (ii) there is no evidence of a deterrent effect (indeed the available evidence seems to show there is no such effect); (iii) life without parole is just as effective a way to prevent someone reoffending as executing them; (iv) saving money can never be a justification for taking someoene's life; and (v) mistakes are bound to happen, and that means people being put to death for a crime they didn't commit.

The death penalty serves no purpose other than to grant retribution to the family of the victim and society at large. Granted, it prevents the perpetrator from committing any further crimes, but it does not guarantee that he was the perp. Oh, and it deters nothing but common sense.

I agree, the death penalty is barbaric. I believe life imprisonment is a much more difficult sentence, and it would give innocents another chance to prove their innocence.

Erick says:
Exonerations in the USA over the past three decades have shown that our human "justice system" makes too many mistakes. People proven innocent ten years later can be released to resume what's left of their life. We cannot recall the dead. Even the innocent ones.
This seems academic until someone you care about gets caught up in the system for something they didn't do, and you watch helplessly as they are zealously prosecuted, ineptly defended, convicted on false evidence, and sentenced.
Then it becomes urgently personal. It has happened (and been documented) too many times.

Death penalty does not stop crime, instead there are so many wrongfully accused who die innocent. Most of the crimes which are punished with death are not premeditated. Acting on impulse can make almost anyone of us capable of terrible things.

We have no death penalty here in Canada, and our crime rate has
not changed since it was abolished. What we do need is for our
judges to make penalties stiffer, but then since they are appointed
and not elected, they don't seem to care as they cannot be removed.

TREEHUGGAHH says:
THE DEATH PENALTY NEEDS TO BE GONE. first of all sometimes the courts convict the wrong person, and that will end a life of someone who doesnt deserve it. Secondly, its hypocrytical we say its wrong to kill, but we are killing them. so we kill someone because they killled someone. 2 wrongs dont make a right. And it does not bring back the dead person.

How about a life for a life! Not everybody killed by the death penalty was innocent. Yes some are innocent and that is wrong and everything should be done to make sure that never happens. When prisoners have it better in jail than alot of people who are out in the world, how are they being punished? Death penalty is the ultimate sentence this side of eternity.

John says:
I say right now the death penalty is needeed. Giving these low life killers life in jail won't work. With gangs in jail these days criminals can still kill from inside the jail cell. Plus they can get rich and everything. I've seen alot about this and the gang empires that run inside jails these days will accept them and these killers will be on the top of the world even in jail. The Death Penalty will keep this from happening because the killer will be dead and have no chnce to do these things.

people Just done realize how many BILLIONS of dollars we spend on these convicts every year. Given there are many arguments as to who gets the right to dicide whether or not these people should live but the truth is, when this man or woman took the like of someone else, They also forfeited their own life to the hands of the family (and government should the family give it). If there is concrete proof that one man or woman murdered in cold blood another man or woman, then he should die. Of course many will sat im wrong for my views but im being realistic here. All those thousands of child molesters and murders that live off our loopholes and out of our pockets really do deserve the ultimate punishment.

I have to say that for all of those who say the death penalty is worng due to the fact that "God gives life therefore he should be the only one to take it away."
You are all contradicting your beliefs. Did you ever think that perhaps in order to rid the world of the evil that exist in it, God allowed a judicial system and the death penalty to exist. We do not know God's purpose and therefore we cannot say that the death penalty is wrong for that reason.
