Marimekko - a Finnish Design Classic

Marimekko was established by Armi Ratia in 1951
The visionary philosophy that Armi Ratia applied to Marimekko was strongly inspired by the ideals of Bauhaus: functionality and 'less is more'.
The first two designers that worked at Marimekko were Maija Isola and Vuokko Nurmesniemi followed by Liisa Suvanto and Annika Rimala.
Marimekko was launched in the USA already in 1958 through the Design Research chain in Massachussets. In 1960 Jackie Kennedy was portrayed in the cover of the 'Sports Illustrated' wearing a sleeveless Marimekko dress.
