it's about natural materials and time

Andy Goldsworthy is an environmental sculptor. He uses organic materials such as rocks, sticks, leaves and ice to create temporary works of art in natural settings. His creations are photographed and then left to change or fall apart over time.

A COLLABORATION WITH NATURE

If you'd like an introduction to the work of Andy Goldsworthy, I really recommend his book "A Collaboration with Nature." He not only explains how he develops and executes his art, but dozens of beautiful, full-color pictures show the works-in-progress as well as the final assemblies. Artworks based on rocks, ice, leaves and more are all shown.

"Faultline" at the DeYoung Museum, San Francisco

The "Faultline" Installation

One of the few permanent installations of a Goldsworthy creation can be found at the entrance to the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. Starting from a small crack just outside the courtyard, the split grows in thickness, then meanders into the entryway, moving back and forth, as well as passing through several large chunks of rock before leading to the doors of the museum.

Goldsworthy spent three months at the Museum during its renovation, hand-cracking the slate tiles to get just the effect he wanted. The large rocks are hewn from a quarry near his home in Scotland, creating further bonds between the artist and the art. The natural drill holes and marks created by cutting and moving the large slabs have all been left in place, unchanged.
