All About Female Superheroes

In 1941 William Moulton Marston, his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne created the first female superhero, Wonder Woman. William Moulton Marston was a psychologist who became famous for inventing the polygraph (Probably where the idea for the magic lasso that makes you tell the truth came from).

Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star Comics #8 as an 8-page insert story. That story had such great response, Wonder Woman was given the lead feature in the Sensation Comics anthology starting from issue #1. Six months later she appeared in her own book. Wonder Woman also appeared in All Star Comics starting from issue #11 as a member of the Justice Society. Wonder Woman later become one of the founding members of the Justice League of America along with Batman and Superman.

A host of other female superheroes soon followed in Wonder Woman's footsteps. However wonder Woman has remained one of the most popular if not the most popular female superhero in comics. There is even talks of a Wonder Woman movie.

The original Supergirl first appeared in 1959. Although there were some Precursors to Kara Zor-El, she was officially the original Supergirl.

Some examples of Precursors are Lois Lane as Superwoman in 1943, when Lois gets a blood transfusion from Superman after being hospitalized and dreams she has superpowers and begins her own career as Superwoman.

There was Super-Sister, who was actually Superboy who was changed into a girl by an alien woman named Shar-La after he saved her life.

And then there was Super-Girl who Jimmy Olsen wished into existence using a magic totem. After positive reaction to Super-Girl, the most familiar version of Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, debuted in 1959.

In "Crisis on Infinite Earths" the original Supergirl was killed, there has been many versions of supergirl including the return of Kara Zor-El the original Supergirl. Even PowerGirl is a version of Supergirl. With all these Supergirls it can get very confusing.

Female superheroes are now coming into there own. The are fast becoming more popular than the male counter parts. This is many due to the sexing up of the female superhero.

As we all know sex sells and sexy female superheroes sells lots of comics, posters and cards. Thanks to the young artists of today like Jim Lee, Michael Turner, Rob Liefeld and others, female superheroes are curvier, dressed more provocatively and can be found to have larger breast then the female superheroes of old.

The future looks good for female superheroes with the Wonder Woman movie about to be made and if successful, there will surely be more movies featuring female superheroes.
