MiMi: Personally

Some things you might not know about Squidoo writer, GrowWear. Please call me MiMi. This page is for those who might wish to know me better.

Probably one of the last images of me prior to my "second life."

Our Second Life

No longer who we were

My husband and I lost our son ten years ago this coming December 6, right between Thanksgiving and Christmas. No longer the same holidays for us as they were before.

It is unbelievably hard to write this, but I feel that it defines me more than anything else in my life, and with four years of being on Squidoo, I feel it's time I made the inner me a little more visible to my fellow online writers and readers.

Our son had the heart of an angel. We lost him suddenly; he was our only child. His father and I are still trying to pick up the pieces, but some days are better than others, and no day has ever been completely happy again.

It's just me and my hubby now. And our grandson, who, at this writing, has just gone home from spending the last day of spring 2011 with us. Our grandson is one loved grandchild.

...Following are some more items of information about me. I'll add to this as I get time. For now, please read on, and if you purchase from my recommendations, all royalties are set to go directly to Friends Of The Park.

I love to play with my grandson.

He is a true blessing. As hard as life is now for my husband and me, it's hard to imagine that we'd be as well as we are if our grandson hadn't been here ten years ago.

3.5" x 5" My Grandson Pewter Picture Frame

Amazon Price: $12.95 (as of 05/27/2012)Buy Now

I've said before that the only thing I collect is books, but I might be considered a picture-frame collector too, and with lots of frame styles to work with when changing out a display.

I love to read.

Bios, mostly, but I do enjoy a Jason Bourne type now and again, and I recently read "The Help." The movie version of "The Help" is in my waiting list at Netflix. Once available, I will enjoy seeing the characters from the book come to life.

The last bio I read.

I'm artistic.

Can't see calling myself an artist, though. My sister says I don't give myself enough credit, but anyway. :) What I enjoy most is re-designing. That's what I call going into a friend's home, a family member's home--and even to some homes of strangers via referrals--to re-design their living room (usually) using whatever furniture and other items that they already own. It's not an official business or anything. I just love to do it, and I love to see the pleased look on peoples' faces.

Domino: The Book of Decorating: A Room-by-Room Guide to Creating a Home That Makes You Happy

Amazon Price: $18.75 (as of 05/27/2012)Buy Now

If decorating is not your forte, get some insider secrets here.

I'm a writer. Sort of.

My main goal is to try to convey what I'm thinking--I don't really have a "need" to write, so that makes me a "sort of" writer, I guess. But, I love expressing myself through this platform and giving my best to the folks that read it.

The Boxcar Children Bookshelf (The Boxcar Children Mysteries, Books 1-12)

Amazon Price: $27.15 (as of 05/27/2012)Buy Now

If you have children or grandchildren just learning to read or are ready for their first chapter books, they will never forget that you gave them The Boxcar Children. The little boxcar expands to hold up to 32 books.

I love to watch movies.

Foreign films are my favorite. They are more realistic in their outcomes. That makes them much grittier, though, and thereby hard for some people to adjust to.

Documentaries are great. I like the bio docs, mostly. Waiting now for them to release "Jack Kerouac: King Of The Beats" to Netflix's Instant Queue.

Our favorite time, for my husband and me alone, is when all things are done for the day and we can sit together to watch a great movie. Over the years, our taste in films has become a lot alike. I'll watch action flicks now and again, and he's just as ready for a foreign film as I am.

My favorite foreign film, at this moment, is listed below.

Cries & Whispers (The Criterion Collection)

Amazon Price: $15.95 (as of 05/27/2012)Buy Now

A masterpiece. This is a movie that is hard to forget. Even so, I am tempted to watch it again tonight before I go to bed. Late, as usual. But, just thinking about it makes me want to see it again.

I'm a DIYer.

We are a do-it-yourself couple here. We've made our own sinkers for fishing, re-carpeted two boats (that's some sticky glue!), built our house with our own hands (and from the plans I drew), installed our own well and well house, built our own dog kennel, built our own sheds...just to name a few of the things we have done. We are getting older, but we still have that DIY attitude.

Stanley 94-248 65-Piece General Homeowner's Tool Set

Amazon Price: $47.99 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

Just starting out? This tool kit will set you up nicely.

I'm very private.

"Extremely private." So says my husband and sister. But what can I say? I can't throw business papers away without shredding them first. I won't let the curtains stay open past dark. Online, very few folks know my legal name. ...I have just learned to guard my world as much as I can.

Too many scenes from Tru TV? Mental issues stemming from my upbringing? Afraid for our loss of privacy as a whole? I don't know about the answers to the first two questions, but I do know the last question gets a resounding "yes."

The Right to Privacy

Amazon Price: $5.00 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

The truth about our privacy is not going away just by burying our heads in the sand.

I'm an inventor.

Shark Tank is my favorite network-TV show. And, like so many of my favorite shows, is based on a UK show--Dragon's Den, in this case.

I am always thinking of new inventions, but I have only one invention that I intend to patent...

...Why a patent now? Well, I'm not getting any younger. So, I decided that if I want to finally do what I have dreamed of doing for so long, I had better get to doing it while I still have enough stamina to bring my idea to market.

One day, I may tell you about my Teddy bear invention. It's a favorite, but not the one I plan to patent, so I probably should just give the idea away. ;)

If you know me already, you might wonder that I can remain, for the most part, unattached to outcomes. Well, it's not from turning on the "don't care" button, I can assure you. Read this book, and you'll rejoice in failure. ...Maybe. ...Somewhat. ...Well, you'll embrace it, at least. :)

Sharks for the children

A video segment from Shark Tank

This video shows what an excellent product a mother (Lori Lite) has come up with, and it shows some of her negotiations with the panel to get funding. The panel takes some getting used to--they are very money-oriented, hence, "sharks." Barbara (pictured below, in video freeze frame) is my favorite shark.

Update about previous video

I'm here to tell you, folks, I knew this was a winner within the first moment of understanding what she was doing. A very good idea. Very pleased to see it succeeding. And it inspired a lens: Best Books To Help Children Unwind.

I couldn't agree more on what fellow squids have written about you here. I have surely enjoyed getting to know more about you as a lensmaster and a person. You are inspiring and wonderfully positive influence in whatever you do. Thanks for sharing your story even though it was one of the hardest things to do. Know that you are appreciated and loved very much...peace and blessings! :)

AJ, that means a lot to me. Thank you.

MiMi, first I'd like to say that I am so very sorry for your loss. I'm sure there are no words that can bring you comfort but know that others "out there" wish you inner peace. Second, I totally agree with you on the privacy issue and thank you for sharing as much as you did. Your grandchild will learn from you how wonderful his Dad was.

Your words are very much appreciated.

I'm feeling really sad right now reading about your dreadful loss... that you have shared with the community your grief is encouraging for others who have experienced pain beyond belief. Thank you so much!
  • GrowWear Jul 7, 2011 @ 3:47 pm | delete
Thank you, Donnette. I appreciate it. One does go on. I do wish, though, that I were a better role model for parents who've lost their only children. I feel wholly inadequate in that department.

I have been reading your lenses and seeing glimpses of your heart for 2 years now. Most of what you shared here, I had previously discerned, but I am genuinely heartbroken over learning about the death of your precious son. I have no words, but I hurt for you and your husband.

Thank you so much, Cynthia. You are much appreciated.

A bittersweet lens, so sorry for your loss. I wish I could wave a magic wand for you.
