About Head Lice and Nits
Head lice are nasty pests that spread very easily. These tiny insects live on the scalp and lay eggs, called nits, which stick to hair very close to the scalp. Folks assume that somebody with lice is not clean, but that is just a myth. Anybody can get lice because they spread so easily. Information is a valuable tool in combating them and if you have school age children, you will know how frustrating a case of head lice can be and how difficult it is to rid the household of these pesky invaders. You can save yourself a lot of time and money by arming yourself with the facts.
Head Lice Information
Although head lice are a pain, they do not spread disease. Lice and their eggs are spread through sharing items such as hats, combs, brushes and headphones. However, direct contact does not have to occur for lice to spread. This is what makes them so contagious. If you suspect a lice infestation, closely examine the scalp under a bright light. A louse is about two to four millimeters long, so it can be hard to see. Nits are more visible. They appear as specks that are grayish-white and are oval in shape.

Diagnosing and Treating Head Lice
Infestations are very common among children in child care centers and schools. To diagnose a case of lice, you need to find live insects because the nits can be found before the lice are actually born. If you do find nits, check again in one week, and then again after two weeks if another child has any. Check close to the scalp, behind the ears, the back of the neck and on top of the head. There are a number of very effective over the counter treatments. The majority of these head lice treatment products contain an insecticide that kills the lice. The three insecticides approved for use in treating head lice are pyrethrin, permethrin and lindane.
Lindane can be toxic, so never use a product containing it on infants or young children.
Use the products as directed and do not leave the shampoo or rinse in hair longer than instructed because they can burn the scalp. It is best to do the treatment and rinsing over a sink, not in the bath or shower so that other parts of the body do not come in contact with the product. You should repeat the treatment a week later. Do not consider these shampoos a preventative measure, and never use them unless you find lice.
Once you have dealt with your hair, cleaning your house is very simple. Wash all of your sheets, towels and recently worn clothing using hot water and a very hot dryer. A thorough vacuuming will take care of carpet and furniture since lice do not live long without a host. Do not forget to also clean the upholstery in your car. After that, educate yourself and your family about how head lice spread. They are one house guest that you never want to come back.

The Facts of Head Lice Life
Mention head lice and everyone will cringe, but these nasty nit makers are fairly benign creatures. Nonetheless, it is important to know the the truth about head lice so that you can prevent an infestation from occurring in your home.Read on to find out what you need to know to prevent the bugs from coming into your home and debunk some common myths about these pesky parasites.
Lice are more annoying than they are dangerous. Contrary to popular belief, hygiene has nothing to do with head lice and nits. At worst, the bites may cause your scalp to become itchy and persistent scratching may lead to skin irritation or infection. The belief that lice leap from person to person is also incorrect. Lice are transferred by contact, either directly or through sharing items like a comb, hat, furniture or bedding. To check for lice, examine the scalp for live insects or head lice eggs on the hair shaft. Unless the infestation is heavy, it is more common to see nits than it is to see adult bugs crawling on the scalp.
How NOT to Kill Lice
There are a million rumored remedies for an infestation, but few of them actually work and some are just downright dangerous. Folks who believe in traditional lice treatment methods may tell you that gasoline or kerosene will kill lice. While that may be true, the person you are using the treatment on is likely to suffer the same fate as the louse! NEVER use gasoline or kerosene because the volatile fumes will combust. Some people believe that Vaseline will kill lice. Yes - petroleum jelly will smother them, but it will not destroy the nits and it is virtually impossible to get the greasy goop out of your hair.Head lice are resilient little pests. Soap and water will not harm them, so it is best to consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice on lice products. Medicated shampoos, creams and lotions are available in varying strengths. It is essential that you carefully follow the product's application instructions. Too little will render the product ineffective and too much can seriously harm you. After the treatment, continue to manually remove the nits for a week and then give yourself a second helping of head lice treatment. If the lice and nits continue to be a problem, consult your doctor.
If you are afraid that you will have to move because of a bout of head lice, don't worry. These bugs are human parasites and die within a few days without a host. Once you have treated your hair, a little housecleaning will take care of the rest of the problem. Wash bedding, clothes and towels in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer. Even brushes and combs can be cleaned with hot water. Patience and a little common sense will make dealing with the insects a lot easier.
