3 Natural Cures for Insomnia

If you are having a difficult time falling asleep, the last thing that you want to do is to reach for a pharmaceutical cure.

Although some of these pills will help you to fall asleep, they really are only inducing a fake sleep that will not necessarily help to cure the problem.

They may make you unconscious but what you are really getting can hardly be called sleep by any stretch of the imagination. If you would like to cure your insomnia from the root of the problem, here are three natural cures that you can use which tend to help.

The first cure is blocking any extra sound or light that is coming into the room in which you are sleeping. These are the two problems that cause a lack of sleep in many individuals.

Things such as outside noise in the home, a TV that is playing in our bedroom or even somebody that is snoring can make a big difference in how you're going to sleep. Light also tends to keep us awake and if there is light in our bedroom, we are never going to be able to achieve that deep level of sleep that we need in order to feel rested and rejuvenated.

The second thing that you can do is to prepare your mind and body for a good night's sleep. Try to avoid any type of heavy eating or stimulant drinks, such as caffeine within several hours of going to sleep. You should also avoid watching any television shows or movies that will stimulate your thinking to a level that may keep you up at night.

About an hour before it is time to go to sleep, take the time to relax your mind with some soft music and perhaps some poetry. Take a nice bath and do some deep breathing exercises. You would probably be surprised with how much this will help you sleep at night.

Finally, you may try some good old fashion warm milk if you are having a difficult time sleeping. Warm milk has tryptophan which can help the body to produce serotonin naturally.

This particular hormone helps you to feel good and may help to alleviate any stress that is keeping you up at night. Not only that, it may also help in producing the hormone melatonin naturally which is one of the body's strongest ways of putting us to sleep.

3 Things to Do Before You Go to Sleep

Most of us tend to have a short checklist of things that we need to do before we go to sleep at night.

These include such things as making sure that the sink is clear of any dishes, leaving the dogs out and checking to see if the doors are locked.

If we are dealing with insomnia, however, we should make sure that we have a checklist of things to do in order to cure this naturally as well. Here are three different things that we should do every night in order to help us to get some deep sleep before it is time to wake up again.

The first thing that you should do is to make sure that your environment is clean. This is not only true of your area where you will be sleeping, it is also true of your body. Even though we are not going to be able to see the fact that our room is clean whenever we are sleeping, our mind will know that it is.

An uncluttered environment will unclutter your mind and allow you to sleep unencumbered during the night. Making sure that your body is clean will also help you to get a good nights sleep. One of the reasons why this is the case is because pollen tends to collect in our hair during the day. If allergies are a problem, washing your hair will remove this source of allergic reactions.

The second thing that you should do every night is to prepare your mind for a good nights sleep. Don't allow anything to stimulate you mentally within the immediate hour before you go to sleep. This would include the things that you watch on TV as well as the things that you might read. Concentrate on relaxing things and allow your mind to drift to calming thoughts. This will go a long way in
helping you to sleep all night long.

Finally, you should make sure that your entire household is prepared for you to sleep properly. The two biggest sleep killers are noise and light. Make sure that everybody understands that you need things to be quiet in order for you to sleep well. You should also consider investing in some blinds or perhaps an eye cover in order for it to be as dark as possible. Both of these things will help you to fall asleep quickly and to stay asleep for the long term.

Silence - the Key to Deep Sleep

One of the most difficult things that we have to deal with on a regular basis is a hard time sleeping.

For some of us, it becomes almost chronic in nature and it affects every area of our life. Not only are we robbing ourselves of the sleep that we need at night and making it difficult to get through these long hours, it can also make us lethargic during the day and fog our brain. If you are having a difficult time dealing with day to day life as a result of not being able to sleep at night, you may need to silence the situation.

I'm not necessarily talking about finding a cure for the insomnia, I'm talking about getting into an environment that is quiet.

Far too many of us have to deal with noise on a regular basis and it gets to the point where we may not even recognize that it is happening. A good example of this is falling asleep with the television set on. Many of us will say that we need that noise in the background in order for us to be able to sleep.

What we don't realize, however, is that the noise of the television set is actually keeping us from falling into a deep sleep. The noise that is from the television is often just a mask to hide other noise that may be going on in the background. If you want to achieve truly deep sleep and wake feeling rejuvenated, eliminate all of the noise that you possibly can from your home.

This can be a real challenge if you have noise in the same room as you are trying to sleep, such as if somebody is snoring. The only real way for you to get around this is to wear some kind of earplug or headset. You might be surprised to find out that putting some earplugs in on a nightly basis is going to help you to sleep without waking up periodically. If you do this, make sure that you have a backup alarm set which will be able to be heard, even with your earplugs in.

It may take a little bit of work on your part in order to discover what noises need to be removed from your household. It will all be worth the effort, however, whenever you finally get the good nights sleep that you need.

Drink Water and Sleep

Our bodies are an amazingly balanced machine.

From the time that we are born, there is a delicate balance that exists between us and the environment around us. Unfortunately, many of us do not do what is necessary for us to maintain that balance throughout our lifetime.

Breathing in the air that is polluted and eating the wrong foods can make a big difference in how our bodies react on a regular basis. There may also be another problem, however, that is causing this imbalance and that is dehydration. This can cause problems in us that range anywhere from aches and pains to chronic insomnia.

Insomnia can come in many different forms but it is really just being unable to sleep or even to rest for more than a few moments at a time. If you have been dealing with this, even if you have only been dealing with it for a few days, you realize that it can be very frustrating to handle.

You might be surprised, however, to find out that dehydration may be at the root of your insomnia. Although it is not typically something that many people may consider, drinking enough water to get yourself out of a dehydrated state may be just the ticket to help you to sleep better.

The amount of water that you're going to need to drink is considered by many to be excessive. The fact of the matter is, we are well over 90% water so any lack of it in our body is going to cause some serious problems.

In order to truly be rehydrated, you're going to need to drink one half of your body weight every day in ounces of water. For example, a 200 pound man is going to need to drink 100 ounces of water. Although this may seem like a lot, it can easily be done by drinking five 20 ounce bottles of water throughout the day. Drink one when you get up, one before you go to bed and spread the other three out through the day.

You should also make sure that you are taking natural sea salt in order to allow the water to stay in your body long enough to hydrate you. Take a pinch of salt every time you drink water.

If you start to swell a little bit, cut back on the amount of salt that you are taking and the swelling will go away quickly. It may seem like a simple cure but you would be surprised with how often dehydration is at the root of insomnia problems.

Relax Your Mind and Sleep

How often do you have a hard time sleeping because you tend to have too much on your mind?

It is not always stressful situations that can cause a lack of sleep but it is really just having a busy mind that does not allow us to relax enough to drift off. If you really want to get a good nights sleep and overcome these insomnia like symptoms, you need to be able to relax your mind. Once you're able to learn how to do this, you would be surprised with how quickly you are able to fall asleep and the quality of sleep that you'll get.

Relaxing your mind is not something that you're going to learn to be able to do overnight. As a matter of fact, it often takes quite a few days or perhaps even a week before you become proficient at doing it. While you're learning how to do it, however, you can certainly reap the rewards of a more relaxed mind as a result. Here are several different things that you can do.

First of all, you need to make sure that you are not filling your mind with anything that will cause it to stress or to overwork. This includes engaging in any kind of serious conversation within a half-hour of that time or watching television shows and movies that have you on the edge of your seat.

Before you go to bed, take a little bit of time to sit in a quiet area, meditate and relax. Think positive thoughts and allow your mind to drift to something that is going to make you feel good. If you have a difficult time doing this, try doing it with a little smile on your face. Believe it or not, this really helps.

You can also do other things to help relax your mind, such as taking warm baths, listening to some soothing music or reading poetry. The most important thing is that you try and forget all of the troubles that are on your mind from the day and don't dwell on anything that will keep you up at night. All of your troubles are going to be there the next day, there is no need for you to worry about them at night so relax and enjoy some sleep.
