History of the Hybrid Car

The history of the hybrid car begins in 1899 when Ferdinand Porsche engineered the first successful hybrid-electric vehicle.


Hobbyists have continued building hybrids since that time, but no major auto manufacturers put a hybrid car into mass production until late in the twentieth century.

The widest utilization of hybrid technology during that interim period was actually in diesel-electric submarines.

They essentially operate in the same manner as a hybrid car, however the goal in submarines was to economize oxygen rather than fuel.

Submarines have since evolved to nuclear power though several nations still rely on diesel-electric technology.

The introduction of the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius in the 1990s marked the first true success of hybrid car technology. Plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles were developed in the 2000s.

The PHEVs can be recharged by plugging in to the electrical power grid, and for short trips can operate without conventional fuel. Renault released the firstr PHEV production model dubbed the Kangoo in 2003.

Since its release, the Prius has remained in high demand. Newer designs of hybrid cars are less expensive and look more like their conventional counterparts.

The new hybrids often look and perform exactly as their gas-powered siblings, but deliver 50% better fuel efficiency. For instance, the Honda Civic Hybrid looks exactly like the gas version. But it gets 50 miles per gallon.


In 2004 the first hybrid SUV, the Ford Escape Hybrid was introduced. 2005 saw two new hybrid SUVs in the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the Lexus RX 400h.

Within the coming decade, Toyota has plans to add hybrid drivetrains to every model of vehicle it produces. Honda has also released the Accord Hybrid, and Nissan is planning a hybrid model of the Altima.

Hybrid car registrations in the United States rose 25.8% between 2002 and 2003. California has the most hybrid cars registered. Toyota sold 306,862 hybrids between 1997 and November 2004. Honda sold 81,867 hybrids between 1999 and November 2004.


The Advantages of Gasoline Electric Hybrid Cars over Conventional Cars 

Today, more and more people are now considering getting rid of their gas-guzzling conventional cars and purchase a new kind of car available in the market today called hybrid cars.

You may wonder why hybrid cars are gaining popularity all over the United States, but you should consider that hybrid cars can definitely give you a lot more benefits than conventional cars.

Hybrid cars can cost a lot more than conventional cars in terms of retail price. However, if you think in a long-term basis, hybrid cars will tend to be a lot cheaper than you can imagine. Hybrid cars are the next generation cars now available in the market that will enable you to save lots of money by getting more miles on a gallon.

Once you stepped on the accelerator pedal, the hybrid car will automatically turn on the gas engine again. With this concept, you won't spend a lot of fuel when you are trapped in a gridlock. Also, when the car is in motion, the electric motor and the gasoline engine will share the propulsion.

Another great advantage of gasoline-electric cars or hybrid cars is that it runs on clean energy. It has been found that hybrid cars emit far lower toxic fumes than conventional cars.

Also, since it runs on a small gasoline engine and an electric motor, it is far quieter than conventional cars. This means that it can effectively help in reducing air pollution and noise as well.

Hybrid cars don't need to be plugged in like electric cars to recharge. This is because the batteries are charged when the car itself is running or when the car is braking.

Recently, the President of the United States has signed an agreement in 2005 that states tax incentives for hybrid car buyers. This means that when you purchase a hybrid car, you will get huge tax relief depending on the hybrid car you purchase.


It will depend on the amount of fuel it can save compared to a conventional car made in 2002 with the same weight class.

With all these benefits, gasoline-electric cars or hybrid cars is definitely the car of choice in today's world. You will never be affected with constant oil price hikes and erratic movement in prices in the fuel industry.

Basic Technology of Hybrid Vehicles Explained 

Petroleum-based fuels are ideally suited for internal combustion engine technology, which has powered most cars and trucks for over a century.

Burning fossil fuels for over a hundred years however has done some serious damage to the ecology of the planet. Enter the electric vehicle with lower emissions, but correspondingly lower power.

Finally, both technologies have come together in hybrid vehicles, also known as hybrid electric vehicles or HEVs.

Present-day hybrid vehicles are equipped with both gas internal combustion engines and electric motors. The gas engine produces power through small and continuous controlled explosions that push pistons which turn a rotating crankshaft.

The force created by the rotation crankshaft is transmitted through a number of components and ultimately turns the vehicle's wheels. The electric motor is powered by a battery which creates energy through a chemical reaction.

The battery is continually recharged by a generator that is powered by the internal combustion engine.

Hybrid vehicles are of parallel or series design, or a combination of the two.

In parallel design vehicles, the electric propulsion system and the energy conversion unit are connected directly to the vehicle's wheels. The gas engine is used for highway driving and the electric motor acts an assist and provides additional power for acceleration, hill climbing, and other situations that require more power.

In series design vehicles, the gas engine is connected to an electricity producing generator. This electricity is used to power an electric motor, which in turn powers the vehicle's wheels.

Hybrid vehicles can also be designed to use the series configuration at low speeds, and the parallel configuration for acceleration and highway driving.

Braking in conventional vehicles generates heat. This energy is wasted. Some hybrid vehicles convert this energy to electricity and use it to help propel the vehicle. This process is called regenerative braking and contributes to the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

Other hybrid vehicles extend the life of the car's on-board battery system by using ultracapacitors. The ultracapacitor is more efficient than a battery for capturing the energy from regenerative braking and utilizing it for initial acceleration.

How do Hybrid Vehicles Get Such Great Gas Mileage? 

It's not by accident that many of the most fuel efficient vehicles for the 2005 model year were hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), also known as hybrid vehicles, or simply hybrids.

Hybrid vehicles are built in a variety of configurations to achieve different objectives. They combine an electric motor with the best features of the internal combustion engine and are capable of significant improvements of fuel economy without giving up performance or driving range.

Some hybrids are also configured to supply power for power tools or other electrical devices.

Hybrid vehicles are powered primarily by an internal combustion engine, just like conventional vehicles. However, they also convert energy normally wasted during braking and coasting into electricity. This energy is stored in a battery until it is needed by the electric motor.

Internal combustion engines are least efficient in low-speed driving conditions, and when hill climbing or accelerating. This is where the electric motor kicks in, by assisting the gasoline engine in these low-efficiency situations.

Some hybrids also shut the engine off automatically when the vehicle comes to a stop, and restart it when the driver steps on the accelerator. This prevents further waste of energy by idling the engine when stopped.

Unlike vehicles that are solely electric powered, hybrid vehicles don't have to be recharged by plugging them into an external electrical source.
All the energy the vehicle needs is provided by conventional gasoline and regenerative braking.

The price of gas continues to fluctuate, but you don't have to be left broke. And you don't have to let the unstable economy control you.

That's not what it feels like to own a hybrid car. That's what it's like to own a gas guzzling conventional car. When you own a hybrid car, you will see the money flowing into your pockets instead of going into the trashcan.

Balance your own checkbook? Write down the cost each time you visit the gas station. What does the addition tell you about your car? Whatever it's telling you, a hybrid car won't tell you the same thing. And that's guaranteed.

So make your money talk to you the way you'd like it to. Instead of having it say to you all the time that it's on its' way out of your pocket, have it tell you, it's in your pocket to stay. Get a hybrid car, because after all, the gas price man didn't work your forty hours a week.

Who worked those forty hours? You did. So make sure you have something to show for it for a chance. A hybrid car is a really nice car to have. And it will be a real help to your bank account.

Your wife and kids who are in college will love you more. So what are you waiting for? Buy a hybrid car so you can go around thinking, "money cometh."
