What Are Precious Metals?

Precious metals are rare metals with high economic worth that is determined by supply and demand or market value. The most common use of precious metals are to back currencies, coinage, jewelry making, industrial and investment purposes.

There are nearly a dozen precious metals, the most commonly traded are gold, silver and platinum. Precious metals in found in bulk form are referred to as bullion and are openly traded on world commodity markets. They can also be purchased as tangible assets in the form of bars, ingots and bullion coins. Bars, ingots and bullion coins made from precious metals are usually rated at 99. 999% purity for metal content and valued by weight.

Its high level of ductility makes it especially valuable in industrial applications as well, such as photography, soldering, electrical contacts and dentistry. Silver can be mixed with other metals to increase hardness.

Platinum
Platinum is used in a wide variety of products from jewelry to industrial applications that include dentistry, lab equipment and even catalytic converters used on cars.. This precious metal is silver-white and resists tarnishing, unlike silver. Platinum looks a lot like silver but is priced on the same level as gold. In fact, platinum is generally considered one of the most rare of the precious metals.
