Great lens

- My grandmother used to make strawberry rhubarb pies when I was a kid. I loved them! I used to eat rhubarb raw out of the garden. One day, I thought I had found a piece of rhubarb and bit into it. Yuk!!! It was NOT rhubarb. I have no idea what it was. I don't think I've tried to stick another piece in my mouth since that day. I would like to try making a pie for my husband. He has never had one.

- I've made both rhubarb pie and rhubarb crisp. My dad grew rhubarb in the yard of the first house I remember. This spring I planted some and I'll just have to wait for it to grow. I do think it's a lovely ornamental plant, but I'm sure we will eat some when it's ready. I think I have to wait two years for the first real harvest.
This is a lovely page and I can see why you get lens of the day.

- Growing up in the PA countryside, rhubarb was plentiful and my mother loved to whip up a pie made with fresh strawberries and rhubarb or a pie with fresh peaches and rhubarb. Great memories! It's been 25 years since I've eaten it. I haven't seen it in stores in CA but then again, I haven't been looking. I'm going to make it a point to go to "Whole Foods" and check. You've made me hungry for rhubarb. 5*s!

- I planted Rhubarb in my garden last year in honor of my Great-Grandmother. She had it planted in her yard and I would help her pick it and then she would let me help in the kitchen to make fruit crisps. Rhubarb was the base but she would throw in what ever else was in season. I picked the first stalks 2 weeks ago and made a crisp with a mix of rhubarb, apples and dried cranberries. I am in love and my plants are doing great, cant wait till summer when the fruit trees start producing.

- Congrats on making LOTD! You definitely deserve it. And speaking of rhubard, we used to grow and sell it at a farmer's market in Connecticut, and many of our customers would ask, "What do you DO with rhubarb, anyway? Just make pies?" So we started making things with it and bringing samples for tasting, along with recipes. We even made up our own concoction of "rhubarb ade" (like lemonade but ... you guessed it! With rhubarb instead of lemons). Soon afterwards, we started selling out of rhubarb within ten minutes of the market opening each Saturday.

- Rhubarb! Such fun. Memories of Grandma and sitting on the back porch with a shaker of salt. Don't report me to the Heart & Stroke people. Grandma wasn't a pie maker though. Her rhubarb went into sauce...on ice cream. Yummy! Alas, my rhubarb is in two neighbors yard as my last little nub couldn't withstand the fence building. Not to fear. This year I'll get some back and start anew.
Congratulations on lens of the day! Talk about a 'pick me up' after a weary day. Terrific!

- I was 12 and I was out weeding the backyard of a house we rented. I thought it was just another weed, but my Italian neighbor began to yell at me, "You no pull out!" At first I thought she had a lot of nerve to tell me not to pull out my weeds. I decided to hand them to her and she smiled and said,"Thank you." From that day forward, she would be outside when I was weeding on Saturdays and would wait patiently for my rhubarb, raspberries and gooseberries. I did try the rhubarb pie, raspberry squares, and gooseberry pie; I didn't care for them. But her homemade spaghetti sauce was the best I had ever had. The motto here is, "Give your neighbors the rhubarb you don't want, you might just get something tasty in return." Wonderful, colorful lens, makes me want to try it again!

I've had to re-embrace the wonders of rhubarb thanks to my ex-wife. When were dating she, being the farm girl she was, baked a rhubarb cake for me. Told me it was a very old family recipe and well liked. I could barely hold still as she brought it out to show me. It looked heavenly.
I sat at the kitchen table with a glass of milk and readied myself for an experience that I was sure not to soon forget (hype being what it is). The first bite was......well....also my last bite of ANYTHING rhubarb for many years. Apparently, in her haste to win her way to my heart, she forgot the essential ingredient of sugar.
But, I am recovered and now enjoy rhubarb on occasion.
Beautiful lens (as always), and of course your voice is always a thrill.
Thank you!

- Congrats on LOTD. I really enjoyed learning more about Rhubarb. I have eaten it but never grown it or cooked it so this was very informative. I have always thought the plant was beautiful and this lens is also beautiful. Well done.

- Surely no mention of Rhubarb is complete without reference to the world famous Rhubarb Triangle of West Yorkshire, UK?

- We love rhubarb and have a tiny, not very impressive plot in our yard. (So we are not guilty of leaving it unused.) Great lens, congratulations on Lens of the Day!

- I love rhubarb too! It's amazing to me how many people I meet who've never had it. When I don't feel like cooking, I just add a bit of sugar, and some strawberry jam, stew it a bit on the stove top and put a splash of cream on it. Heaven.

- These recipes sound good, but would be kind of challenging for most American cooks. I wish we were on the metric system like the rest of the world, but alas, I'm clueless. If 140g equals 5oz, is that by weight or volume? And what is 'caster sugar'? I want to try a couple of these recipes, but I'll have to do some research first!

- Thanks for the info! I have a rhubarb plant that my aunt gave me before she passed away in a car accident. For the past five years I've just watched it grow until it was all woody because I wasn't really sure what to do with it. This summer I'll have to give some of your recipes a try. And speaking of recipes: older friend of mine from church used to invite us over for a wonderful beverage using a rhubarb syrup in ginger ale. Do you (or any of these books) have a recipe for that?

- Back in Germany I used to love rhubarb a lot. Either prepared or also raw. Unfortunately here in Cyprus I see it very seldom in shops and the taste didn't convince me. So I have to wait for the next trip to Germany to have some fresh rhubarb from mom's garden.
