Causes and Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome

Symptoms to help you identify Restless Leg Syndrome and possible causes of the disorder.

About Restless Leg Syndrome

Can't Relax?

Oftentimes when I'm done with the day's work all I want to do is sit down with my husband a relax on the couch, but after a busy day it seems almost impossible to remain sedentary. A few minutes after I try to sit and relax, I get strange sensations in my knees and calf muscle area, like I just need to contract those muscles.

If you have symptoms similar, or if you can't sleep at night because of these sensations, you may have Restless Leg Syndrome.

About RLS

Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome

The Symptoms of RLS are very easily identified by people experiencing them. Most describe the sensations in their legs as "creepy crawly" or "pulling."

RLS is characterized by symptoms sufferers report in common:

Irritating Sensations: Not always painful, but mostly described as a sensation to move.

Urge to move: Walking around and stretching seems to ease the discomfort.

Worsening symptoms in the evenings.

Rest or Stillness brings the symptoms about.

Visible movements in legs: some experience involuntary movements in the feet and legs.

Causes and Contributing Factors to RLS

RLS is a central nervous system disorder, which means it is based in the spinal column or in the brain. It may be caused by Dopamine imbalances. Dopamine levels naturally decrease at night, which is why symptoms may only be present during the evening. Iron deficiencies may also be to blame. Iron plays an important role in producing Dopamine, so you may experience symptoms if part of your brain isn't getting enough iron.

RLS is grouped into two categories: primary RLS and secondary RLS.

Primary RLS is a condition people are born with. It is a genetic disease and typically worsens with age.

Secondary RLS is believed to be caused by factors in a person's life including anemia, Parkinson's disease, Kidney disease, Pregnancy, thyroid problems, neurologic lesions, or alcoholism.
