The Late Night Double Feature Picture Show...

I remember my first time at "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".  I went with a bunch of friends who had all already been and they took great care of me.  It was the best time ever, I think I smiled for two days.  The audience definitely makes the show when you go see it.  Yes, you can buy a video of it; yes, you can have the soundtrack - but watching it at home just isn't quite the same.    If you've been, you're likely nodding your head and smiling right now.  If you haven't, you're likely scratching your head and wondering if I've gone bats.  Well, read on to see what it's about.  (There's plenty reason here for non-virgins to keep reading - check out the YouTube vids I pulled for this one.)

A Brief Glance At "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 British musical comedy film that parodies science fiction and horror films. Still in limited release nearly 34 years after its premiere, it has the longest running theatrical release in film history. It gained notoriety as a midnight movie in 1977 when audiences began participating with the film in theaters across the United States. "Rocky Horror" is the first movie from a major film studio, such as 20th Century Fox, to be in the midnight movie market. Widely known by mainstream audiences, it has a large international following and is one of the best known and most financially successful midnight movies of all time. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

The film, considered a cult classic, is an adaption of the British musical stage production The Rocky Horror Show. Richard O'Brien, author of the stage show, was assisted by Jim Sharman in writing the screenplay. The movie introduces Tim Curry and features Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick along with cast members from the original Kings Road production of the play performed at the Royal Court Theatre.

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Cast

...everything you ever wanted to know, and some things you didn't know you were interested in.

  • Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a Scientist -- Auditioning for the part for the original stage production Tim Curry sang the song "Tutti Frutti". He originated the role and recreated it in all productions except the Australian production up to filming.
  • Susan Sarandon as Janet Weiss, a Heroine -- Sarandon was not the first choice for the movie role, but Twentieth Century Fox insisted on American casting for the part of both Brad and Janet.
  • Barry Bostwick as Brad Majors, a Hero -- Barry has training in singing, juggling, trapeze, clown techniques, fencing, mime, and ballet.
  • Richard O'Brien as Riff Raff, a Handyman -- The author and song writer, Richard O'Brien had originally seen himself as Eddie. It was director Jim Sharman who cast him as Riff Raff.
  • Patricia Quinn as Magenta, a Domestic -- Quinn reprises her role from the original stage production, however she was not in any of the other productions. She almost did not return for the filming, as the part was drastically reduced from the stage play. Her character transforms from the stage production as simply a vampira into a maid for the film, giving her more purpose.
  • Nell Campbell as Columbia, a Groupie -- It is Columbia's relationship with Eddie that drives Frank into a jealous rage, killing him with an axe. Laura "Little Nell" Campell recreates her character from the original stage production, as well.
  • Jonathan Adams as Dr. Everett Von Scott, a Rival Scientist -- He is Brad and Janet's science teacher. He comes to the castle in search of his nephew Eddie. Adams originally played the role of the Narrator in the London production.
  • Peter Hinwood as Rocky Horror, a Creation -- Muscle bound with blond hair and a tan. Peter Hinwood has his own solo in "Sword of Damocles", but does not speak throughout the show. This was changed from the stage show. Also, Hinwood does not sing in the movie - his songs are performed by Trevor White.
  • Charles Gray as The Criminologist, an Expert -- (Narrator of the film.) Gray accepted role by saying, "Why not". The character becomes a criminologist in the film, another change from the stage production.
  • Meat Loaf as Eddie, an Ex-delivery boy -- Columbia's boyfriend. Dr. Frank-N-Furter murders Eddie in the film version. In the stage version, Eddie merely pops out of a Coke machine and then jumps back in at the end of the scene.

"Rocky Horror" Virgin Tips:

Yes, there really is audience participation, that's why you're going to see it in a theatre!

And, the best (or, at least the most interesting) part of seeing "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in a theatre is to experience the AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION. I don't believe there can be a truly comprehensive list of all audience participation rituals: first of all, there are a lot of regional variances, and some even vary by site. Secondly, I just can't give away everything - you have to be a little surprsed when you go the first time ("lose your cherry"). Besides, I might lose my "R" rating if I wrote it all out for you.

Rocky Horror is truly an audience participation movie (and the first too, by the way). People yell back lines at the screen during the extended pauses between dialogue, dress up in costume and act out the film, and throw props various times during the film. The audience participation phenomenon was observed as early as the film's first run in 1975 (when it bombed during limited engagements in 7 of 8 cities), and was later re-released as a midnight movie where the audience participation really began to flourish. And by the way, for the "gore sensitive", Rocky Horror is NOT a horror film. It is a rock-musical send-up of old science-fiction and horror films.

  • The only thing you really need to bring your first time out in order to have fun is a sense of humor, and money for admission (and food at the nearest 24-hour diner afterwards.) Of course, being surrounded by a bunch of friends is also a good thing. You should dress in whatever makes YOU feel comfortable, but also does not violate any local standards (this usually means nudity is out).

  • But, what about the props and audience participation lines and being in costume? Well, no one expects you to know much of anything your first time out. While audience participation is mandatory to keep the show alive, it is not mandatory that everyone participate, every time. Virgins are not expected to know a thing.

  • Now get busy and check your local theatres to see who is showing "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" this weekend, gather up some friends, and get out there and have a great night!!

Very Cool "Rocky Horror" Stuff For Your Very Own

Suggested "Rocky Horror" Live Showing Props:

Here is a basic list of props and instructions for their use in participation to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". This list may vary according to theater policy or local customs.

  • Rice: At the beginning of the film is a wedding. As the newlyweds exit the church, you should throw the rice along with the on-screen wedding guests.

  • Newspapers: When Brad and Janet are caught in the storm, Janet covers her head with a newspaper (it's "The Plain Dealer"). At this point, you should likewise cover your head.

  • Water pistols: These are used by members of the audience to simulate the rainstorm that Brad and Janet are caught in. (Now do you see why you should use the newspapers?)

  • Flashlights: During the "There's a light" verse of "Over at the Frankenstein Place, "you should light up the theater with candles, flashlights, lighters, etc. (Be careful to respect the theater's policy about open flames - remember you are wearing newspapers on your head!)

  • Rubber gloves: During and after the creation speech, Frank snaps his rubber gloves three times. Later, Magenta pulls these gloves off his hands. You should snap your gloves in sync each time to create a fantastic sound effect.

  • Noisemakers: At the end of the creation speech, the Transylvanians respond with applause and noisemakers. You should do the same.

  • Confetti: At the end of the "Charles Atlas Song" reprise, the Transylvanians throw confetti as Rocky and Frank head toward the bedroom. You should do the same.

  • Toilet paper: When Dr. Scott enters the lab, Brad cries out "Great Scott!" At this point, you should hurl rolls of toilet paper into the air (preferably Scotts Tissue).

  • Toast: When Frank proposes a toast at dinner, members of the audience throw toast into the air (preferably unbuttered... things could get sticky).

  • Party hat: At the dinner table, when Frank puts on a party hat, you should do the same.

  • Bell: During the song "Planet Schmanet Janet," ring the bell when Frank sings "Did you hear a bell ring?"

  • Cards: During the song "I'm Going Home," Frank sings "Cards for sorrow, cards for pain". At this point you should shower the theater with cards.

"There's A Light..."

I love this scene - use your squirt gun, your newspaper (did I mention that Janet is holding a Cleveland Plain Dealer??), and your flashlights for this part. Oh, and remember -- "Castles don't have phones!!"

I truly love Rocky Horror! I must have seen it as a "midnight movie" 25 times. What a blast! I still think Tim Curry rocks the "Boss" costume! It's not hard looking at Rocky either, huh?

Does anyone know what they call the movies where the audience yells things out as they do in Rocky Horror? I knew the word, but I can't remember it. At least I think there's a word for it.
