We will present some facts and current information. Follow thw links for more complete details.

What Is Drug Abuse?

When we asked the question what is drug abuse, it may be helpful to think about it as the third out of four levels of substance use. The first level is actually a level of non use and that is remaining abstinent. The second level of substance or drug use is referred to as that of a social user. The third level is the find as the substance of user and the fourth level is a person who is chemically dependent or who has substance addiction.

The criteria I mentioned are paraphrased and with my own examples, from the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders the DSM IV PC .

Is Alcohol Considered A Drug?

Alcohol is often mentioned in one breath with drugs, especially when the subject is alcohol abuse or drug addiction. More often, alcohol is referred to as a separate substance and in fact, its abuse is often discussed separately from that of drugs. But can alcohol be considered a drug?

Drug defined

If a textbook definition is used, a drug may be defined as a substance that has an effect on living cells and their function and is also used for medical purposes for the diagnosis, prevention and cure of disorders and diseases. As such, alcohol may not be considered as a drug since it is not used directly to effect a cure. However, it is also a substance that can have similar effects to drugs to disinfect, act as an analgesic, a tranquilizer or rarely, a stimulant.

The link between alcohol and drugs

is said to possibly be a contributor to health as some are some drugs, but alcohol, like some drugs can be addictive. When used in moderate amounts, alcohol has been said to improve cardiovascular health. However, health experts discourage non-drinkers to start drinking alcohol for the sole reason of benefiting the heart. They recommend that other methods such as exercising and eating a good diet, should be considered as the first line of defense.

As an addictive substance, alcohol can be as bad as drugs. Alcohol abuse and addiction, often referred in general terms as alcoholism, is a common problem in many communities, able to cut across economic and social barriers. It also produces a physical dependence and when it does, it becomes a chronic disease. The use of too much alcohol, like drugs, can also increase tolerance and produce withdrawal symptoms.

Like drugs, alcoholism can lead to family, health and social problems. It's not uncommon for alcoholics to destroy family and social relationships, lose their jobs or turn to illegal activities in order to support their habit. It also causes health problems that are potentially life threatening, such as liver cirrhosis and cancer.

Drug And Alcohol Treatment: Cutting Through The BS And Showing What Really Works In Chemical Dependency Treatment

There are vast quantities of information on the subject of alcohol and drug rehabs and dependence in general. Information from one source may be the exact opposite to that from another. It can be difficult to know which sources you can trust. Keep reading to learn more of the facts about alcohol and drug treatment.

Just about everyone has a different opinion about how to stop the use of addictive substances and to treat dependence; there are simply too many different beliefs out there.

Is there a best path of course og healing for people who have been diagnosed as being addicted to drugs or alcohol? There is no understanding on the best resolution. People debate the merits of controlling negative consequences, controlling the substances and not using at all.

Not long ago, I read two different review studies;its research covered data drawn from hundreds of controlled research reports and present the facts which are seen across the board. There were a several items which were unchanging across both of these review studies. These were:

1. Growing a huge support system is a must in recovery.

The rate of success for patients in addiction treatment is
much higher where these patients have a support network, including family, friends and colleagues. Self-help groups and other social networks can also play a worthwhile role in helping patients to stay in recovery.

2. Staying in treatment longer is better.

Long term treatment is better than is better than being in short term intense treatment, adding credence to the old saw in recovery circles that recovery is not an isolated event, but rather an ongoing process.

3.No treatment is dramatically the 'best'.

There is no single right answer that works for every patient. Cognitive behavioral treatment, the 12 step system and others have all been equally effective in different cases. Project Match is a government study that tried to match up patients to various treatments by type and their findings were that all of these recovery methods worked equally well.

4. Confrontation is not effective.

The confrontational school of addiction treatment widely used in the 1980s did not yield solutions as readily as does rendering support and positive reinforcing stimulus to patients.

5. The therapeutic relationship is vital.

All of the available data shows that patients are much more likely to be prosperous in recovery if they have a good, positive relationship with their counselor or group members. These relationships keep addicts in recovery interested in the recovery process.

The common elements of any solid addiction treatment method are education, working to build coping skills, building and restoring interpersonal human relationships and keeping the patient involved over the long term.
