Create a Lens for Your Blog To Earn Readers, Keep Readers
Ranked #74,490 in How-To, #842,553 overall
Lenscrafting and blogging go together like chili dogs and Tums. I'll share with you tips, tricks, and magic spells that will help you create lenses on Squidoo that supplement and support your blogging habit.
I created a lens for my hip-hop blog, and it shot up into the Top 100 of Squidoo, which earned me more readers and helped me to keep the ones I already have. Because I'm oh-so-helpful, I'll freely share what worked for me.
Create a Lens to Earn Readers
- It sucks having an interesting blog, but not having many people read it. Other than sucking up to an A-lister, what alternative is there to getting your blog noticed by more people?
Well, you can try building a lens to promote your blog on Squidoo. Here's how:
Firstly - sign up as a lensmaster on Squidoo (of course!)
Secondest - create a lens about your blog and tag it appropriately. This will give browsers an opportunity to discover your blog as they are searching for related topics on Squidoo.
Thirder. Create a "best of" list with your favorite posts and display it as the first module. This will let new readers know that your blog is worth the click-through, even if your last post was about your cat.
Fourthing - use the RSS module to display the last few posts from your blog. To keep it skimmable, I suggest the last 5 posts with only the titles showing.
Fifthist - add related feeds that provide context for your blog. Try a Technorati feed of what others are saying about your blog, or a feed of your recent comments.
Create A Lens To Keep Readers
- Most of your readers float to your blog from Google, and stay for less than a minute to skim a post, perhaps drop a comment, then leave. Some readers would convert into regulars if you quickly let them know how cool your whole blog is, not just that post.
An "about me" or "about this site" page would be helpful, but most blog packages suck at producing an easy way to publish one.
In comes Squidoo. You can create a lens about your blog and use it as your "about me" page.
Concerned about sending your readers off-site? Silly man, they want to leave anyway. Don't worry, your lens will feature many links back to your blog, and give readers enough context to decide if they want to become fans of your scribblings.
And who knows- maybe some of them will use Squidoo to make a lens that features a reference to your blog.
Also, the more readers you send to your lens, the higher your lens will be ranked on Squidoo, and the more exposure your blog will receive. So, readers who come from your blog may help you earn more readers through Squidoo, without knowing it. Cool, ain't it?
Bonus: Create A Lens About A Meme Related To Your Blog
this is a secret tip... I shouldn't be sharing this!
- If your blog has sparked or participated in a "meme", this makes perfect material to create a lens on.
Memes are easy to follow while they are spreading, but after even only a few days it becomes difficult for an eavesdropper to grasp the big picture of a the conversation.
Enter Squidoo.
By devoting a portion of your lens to a meme that involved your blog gives further context to what readers can expect from you, and creates an opportunity for other bloggers to link to your lens as a place to follow the older meme (remember- individul modules can be directly linked to within the page).
You may even consider creating separate lenses for many different memes - always keeping your own blog as the prominent link.
