About Me and My Hometown in New York State's Beautiful Capital Region

This lens is about me, my interests and my family.I was a Medical Technologist for many years before working in a school while my children were small. I enjoy reading, writing, music, tennis, Italian food, and Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movies. As you can tell from my lenses my favorite genre of books is mysteries, most particularly cozies and historical. This lens is also about where I live, my favorite sport and even about my pet.

In addition to playing a little tennis, my family and I enjoy watching the NY Buzz, a local world team tennis team, and occasionally going to the Tennis tournament and baseball games.

I am married and have two children, aged 23 and 20, the oldest an engineer and the younger a college junior. I enjoy reading and have been doing a lot of writing, both on Squidoo and on other sites, where I write reviews.

I was born and raised in the Capital Region and live there still.

Thanks for looking!

Things To Do in the Capital Region

Capital Repertory Theater is a professional, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create meaningful theater for the Capital region.

The New York State Museum in Albany offers approximately 12 new exhibits each year on a wide range of subjects. Exhibits are often developed with their own collections or brought in from renowned museums across the country.

The Schenectady Museum & Planetarium is a dynamic destination just a short drive from Albany, Saratoga, and Troy. This museum celebrates science, invention, and imagination. The Museum explores the area's rich technological heritage, with some of the region's finest interactive exhibits.

Proctors Theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each season, Proctors presents world-class singers, comedians, dance programs, and classical productions, including opera and symphony orchestras, and our top-notch touring Broadway musicals. Many of Proctors musicals come to us 'Direct From Broadway,' meaning that they use the same costumes, sets, and sometimes even the same performers as the Broadway productions.

Schenectady Museum and Planetarium

The Schenectady Museum and Plantarium is a Science museum whichcaterers to children, families and teachers. The museum offers Scienceprograms, Planetarium shows, special exhibits ( The MRI one wasinteresting!) an invention convention for young inventors and outreachprograms, where the Museum goes to the classroom. The museum oftenupdates it's exhibits, and one of the more interesting ones recently wasthe History of Local Baseball. Years ago Schenectady had a Blue Jaysbaseball team which included the likes of former Dodger manager TommyLaSorda, who in 1948, pitched a 15 inning game( they don't make themlike that any more) striking out 25 batters. Billy Connors, now thevice president of player personnel for the New York Yankees was alsoprofiled at the museum exhibit, as he was born and raised inSchenectady.

The Schenectady Museum also features exhibits related to Tech Valley and
the General Electric. Exhibits in the past have included the first
electric car, made at GE. Exhibits on Thomas Edison's inventions have
been tied in to General Electric's beginnings.

Our Best Area Colleges

  • University At Albany-The University at Albany is a co-educational public university in Albany New York which has well known nationally ranked programs in Criminal Justice, Information Technology and Public Administration. In addition to these programs, UAlbany's College of Nanotechnology Science and Engineering ranks number 1 in the world.

UAlbany has over 100 undergraduate majors and over 120 graduate programs to choose from. It has a greatly diversified student body with students from over 100 nations in attendance. UAlbany is a large school population wise with 12,750 undergraduates, and over 5000 graduate students. However, in the days of rising college costs, it is a bargain at $18,000 for tuition and room and board.

Union College-Union College in Schenectady, the first chartered college in New York State, is a private co-educational liberal arts college of about 2500 students. While Union is an expensive college, it is very possible to get a decent sized scholarship to attend. Union offers 40 majors and numerous minors. Each program at Union is supplemented with a strong liberal arts background including their Engineering programs.

Union is different than most colleges in that instead of the traditional semester system, Union offers trimesters. Students take 3-4 classes (usually 3) per term for 10 weeks at a time, leaving them time for sports and other extracurricular activities. While students at Union finish later in the school year than most other colleges, they also have a long break between Thanksgiving and New Years.

Union also has a Minerva program where students are assigned to a Minerva house as freshmen. This house is a meeting place for functions and can also be living quarters. The small size of Union makes its faculty highly accessible and students and faculty alike work together to help the surrounding city area and give back to the community.

RPI-Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, or RPI as it is often called, is a private co-educational college in Troy. RPI is one of the oldest Engineering schools in the country. RPI is a mid-sized college with about 5200 undergraduate students and offers degrees in many engineering fields, as well as in architecture, business and the social sciences.

RPI has one of the few programs in the country which features a combined Biology and MD program of seven years. This is in collaboration with nearby Albany Medical College. With the overlapping of many fields, RPI offers many interdisciplinary programs including ones in Design, Innovation and Society and Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology.

St. Rose-The College of St Rose in Albany New York is a private co-educational liberal arts college known for its highly rated teacher education programs.

The college has 60 undergraduate and 43 graduate programs and approximately 5000 total students. St. Rose focuses on a strong academic program combined with easy access to internships and sports. St. Rose is also very generous with their scholarships for deserving students.
