- Lincoln was a tryrant. It furstrates me even more that americans now glorify him as a hero. He was the closest to tyranny the United States ever came. No one ever tells the whole story about him either. No school teacher will ever tell you that he oredered the attacs of several CIVILIAN targets. They will never tell you about all the times that he acted without or completely against congressional approval simply because the military supported him so much. I doubt anyone here knows that several congressman and senators from around the country were concerned that he would even leave his position after his 4 years because of his support from the military.

- It is true that Lincoln himself was essentially a tyrant and a scumbag; however, he was a tyrant and scumbag who, inadvertently, stumbled into waging a war of liberation and effecting a revolution from above against the planter aristocracy of the South. The real heroes of that revolution are, of course, the people who rose up against slavery from below--the Nat Turners and John Browns, the poor white southerners who saw through the planters' deceptions and fought against their tyranny, and the countless northern soldiers who gave their lives for the cause of emancipation, a cause which Lincoln himself only adopted because it was the only way to restore the morale of his troops. The tragedy of the revolution is that it was ultimately co-opted by northern industrial interests more concerned about profit than about human life.

- Absolutely right about him caring nothing of the black race. He freed them only to use them for voting power. Booth was absolutely correct in everything he said about Lincoln. And he was a Republican.
This just goes to show that the party doesn't matter. It's the person's ideals, morals, and values. Lincoln was nothing but a power-hungry tyrant.

- I have been aware of the "qualities" of Lincoln since DiLorenzo's work. When the "qualities" of this man are known, it becomes clear why he has been deified by the collectivists.
In this tyrant, America had its first Caesar, the one who sowed the seeds for the rise of amerika.
He should be buried in an unmarked grave and history set straight with respect to this abomination in human form who was, indeed, a liar, cheat and racist.

- I HAVE BEEN STUNNED DURING THE PAST FEW YEARS TO LEARN THAT LINCOLN WAS A RACIST! as more facts come to light concerning the feelings he had for African Americans, the more disappointment I feel. I SAW A DOCUMENTARY ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL recently that showed that near the end of Lincoln's life, the admiration among black Americans had grown so enormous that many times when they saw him in person, some, would resort to to bowing on their knees to HIM! But I wonder how they would have felt if they heard him speak these words,THERE MUST BE A POSITION OF SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR AND I AM IN FAVOR OF ASSIGNING THE SUPERIOR POSITION TO THE WHITE MAN. If I ever visit Washington D.C. believe me ,I won't go see the Lincoln memorial!!!!!

- He was a man of his word and a man of his time. But yes, he was more a man who cared for the appearance than the substance. Great lens. Blessed.

- You are correct in you evaluation of this tyrant. I would hope that one day this country would come to it's senses, and tear down all the monuments that have been constructed in the image of this destroyer of the real american people.

- Lincoln was a monster who destroyed our republic using lies and manpulation to push the agenda of the NY bankers. He is loved because we have been brainwashed to believe that the head long run to one world government serves us best and nothing else matters. How interesting that he is the love of the left too. The poor dummies like Mark Levine, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity who have a daily worship of this man speaks either to thier stupidity or lack of values or an agenda....
One step toward real freedom is to throw off the lies of lincoln. He enslave us all to a central government.

- I am soooo glad a few people actually know the truth about Lincoln. He was a warmonger and a murderer. Only he could rage war and kill 600K Americans under the call for solidarity. He was and is our worst president ever. I only wish history had written it that way.

- Lincoln wanted a "lily-white America with no native-americans, african-americans, and Martin Luther Kings."
sad but true... and to think, Obama used the same bible as Lincoln at the Inauguration Ceremony, he went to Lincoln's home town before the Inauguaration, and traveled the same route as Lincoln from Lincoln's hometown (Springfield) to the Inauguration...

- Racism and slavery was and still is something that can not be justified period! It does not matter what era you are from. It turns my stomach that Obama praises Lincoln so much also. Barack is very intelligent and Im sure he and Michelle both know how Lincoln was and really felt about black people in comparison to white people and equality. But just like Lincoln Obama is a politician. That fact alone speaks for itself. Lincoln had an agenda and it wasn't freeing slaves. It was mostly saving the union ,which is respectable to a large degree, and(just like the gop today) partly satisfying the corporate interest of railroad companies. But never was equality or human rights for Blacks part of his agenda. It just so happens that in order to save the union the emancipation proclamation was necessary. We as a country need to teach our kids the truth about our history so we can learn from the mistakes of our 4 fathers and work towards a "more perfect union" for all occupants of this country.

- If you folks would look at all the evidence and see Lincoln's growth, you would see he was open and intelligent beyond even perhaps us today.
His views changed in time, and he also had to evolve slowly or else nothing would have been done or accepted by the vast racist white America.
Lincoln nursed his own valet, a Mr. Johnson, when he was gravely ill, and he buried this man with the word "citizen" on his tombstone, before African Americans were citizens. He also had a fascinating relationship with Frederick Douglas, with sincere mutual respect, and he greatly valued Douglas' views. He DID say that maybe only intelligent African Americans should vote. BUt maybe this should be true of ALL Americans allowed to vote anyway!

- Atlanta, that's not true. If you'll look again, the third quote on this lens was taken from a letter Lincoln wrote in 1863. So it *does* show Lincoln's views throughout his political career.
To reiterate: Lincoln is not a hero in my home, because he was a racist who played the slavery issue merely to advance his own political career.

- You are all nuts. You take Lincoln out of his time and judge him by beliefs and opinions of today. You include only statements that would seem to prove your argument and exclude statements that would seem to disprove your argument. You fail to show how Lincolns views and opinions grew and changed from the 1850's to 1864, just as all humans views and opinions change (including your own). Reading your statements angers me and makes me regret going to this website.

- To imagine that Lincoln felt any special empathy for the blacks of the mid nineteenth century ignores such items as his plan to emigrate them all . . . to Africa, Santo Domingo or anywhere but here. Consider for a moment that if secession were not constitutionally permissible, (as I would suggest) then Lincoln oversaw the needles killing of 300,000 Americans and the destruction of billions of dollars of American property. The 'Union' had been preserved at the point of a gun. How is that different than the violent takeover of Poland?

- It really is less important what Lincoln really believed about slavery and the equality or inequality of blacks and whites. The logical conclusion by any reasonable person is that a man who led our nation into a war where 600,000 Americans perished, and another million or so suffered permanent physical and mental consequences, cannot be called a great leader or a a saint. Because slavery was truly evil, and Jim Crow inequality was and still is a horrific evil (thank God, to a lesser extent since the 60's and progress from the Civil Rights Laws) -- and because slavery "officially" (but not actually) ended with the Civil War -- cannot begin to justify all the suffering and death of the Civil War. Along with slavery, the Civil War itself was truly evil and utterly unjustifiable.

- Dont be surprised, it's all true. The civil war wasnt about slavery, it was about keeping people from being able to govern themselves. 15 minutes after the constitution was created there were those who sought to tear it down and the ancestors of those people have done a great job. Its called the ratchet effect. Do something crazy and extreme and when things get "back to normal" they are in fact just a little worse. It goes on and on. How many freedoms did we lose in the pursuit of the Iraq war? When it ends, we may get a few back but it will never be the same as before. The same for all past, future and present events.

- All I can really say is that if this is true about Lincoln, how much more tragic does it make the irony of his assasignation at the hands of John Wilkes Boothe(a known racist) because he wanted to end slavery? This is very interesting to read about, and given that history is made up of mostly lies anyway, I would not be that surprised if it were true.

- Lincoln was a LIAR. He is held as a god in the GOP but the reality is he stole his election (Much like W did in 2000) by flooding the election hall with 300 supporters who entered with FAKE tickets.
lastly, lets not forget he shredded the Constitution by disallowing succession.
How fitting that He's an Icon of the GOP:
LINCOLN IS A LIAR AND A FAKE.

- Good post.
However, it is sad to read the comments of the deluded masses (ie: Tim, Geoff, Nick, et.al.) who still worship at the alter of Lincoln just like brainwashed cult members who refuse to hear the truth, even when it is spelled out for them. Wake up, people! Lincoln was the worst of the worst.

- This shouldn't be any blow of your view of Lincoln, he was still a great man. You must remember, he was a man of his times. Sure, he thought less of blacks. Who didn't? But he held to his word, which is what marks his extreme character.

- If you unerstood the political envirnment of the time you would see that Lincoln's words were in fact very liberal for his time. No man can be free from all the ideals of his time, and Lincoln unfortunatley did appeal to ideology of the people he was running to represent at the time. Studies show his language was harsher in southern Illinois, were racist attitudes were prevelent. However it should be noted Lincoln was far more open minded to the idea of politically equality than nearly any significant politican of his day. Also as a more mature man his actions more than his words show that in later years Lincoln indeed repected blacks and did in fact take the well being of the black population in America very seriously. It must be remembered that Lincoln never saw the Civil War as a true war, he always acted as President of both the North and the South and his actions were conducted uner this assumption.
