1837 to 1861 - The Pre-War Life of Abraham Bates Tower

I'm researching the details of the life of my great-great grandfather born in 1837.

Abraham Bates Tower lived until 1930 so his life spanned almost a century. The family has some information about his Civil War experience and later life, but not much about his life before the Civil War. That's what I hope to uncover and I'll share with you my discoveries here.

Abraham Bates Tower's Parents

Jonathan Warren Tower Sr and Sarah Vest Monroe

Date: October 08, 1999
From Genealogy.com, posted by Michelle Ayers.

Her Tower family tree "starts with Johnathan Tower and Sarah Bates. Their children were Abraham Bates, Mathew, Carolyn, Rose, Charlotte, Warren, Gifford and Jane. Abraham B. Tower and Nancy Angeline Long had 10 kids-Emme, Ezakins, Krastus, Laura, Mary, Malissa, Ruben, Sarah Alice, William, and Viola. My husband's grandfather was Viola's son Austin. This has all been passed down to him and I'm the first to research the line on our end. (Note by Virginia Allain: my grandfather was Viola's son Clarence)

I have Abraham Bates mother as Sarah Vest Monroe b. July 10, 1811, d. September 3, 1884. She was married to Johnathan Warren Tower Sr."

The Tower Genealogy book shows that Sarah (of Crawford County, Indiana) and Johnathan married Feb. 28, 1831. She was born on July 10, 1811, and was the daughter of James aud Nancy (Lemastris) Munroe.

Sarah Vest (Monroe) Tower

Abraham Bates Tower's Mother

Sarah was born July 10, 1811, and was the daughter of James and Nancy (Lemastris) Munroe.
Sarah married Jonathan Warren Tower on Feb. 28, 1831.
Sarah Vest (Munroe) Tower died in Alton, Ind., Sept. 4, 1884, at the age of 73 years, 1 month, 25 days.

(from the Tower Genealogy book)

I'm seeing two versions of the last name: Munroe and Monroe.
I'm curious about the Vest in her name. Was that common as a woman's name or was it a family name?

Soon I'll separate the genealogy (1635 to 1800) and move it to a separate page. So, I'm renaming this page: Abraham Tower - The Indiana Years.

This one is hard to read, as the information doesn't stay in the right rows so the information gets a little jumbled.

The big advantage is that you can search it by name or date. Once you find who you want, note the page number, then go to the version above to see the page with the proper layout.

“The numbering system and duplicate names in the Tower Genealogy book is confounding me”

A.B. Tower's Great-Great Grandparents

Matthew and Lydia (Wilder) Tower

It's a little confusing because this Matthew Tower married Lydia Wilder. They had a son Matthew who married Lydia Beal.

Lydia, born Nov. 24, 1725, married May 15, 1745, to Matthew Tower.
Her parents were Ephraim born in Hingham, Mass. Aug. 22, 1696, married July 30, 1723, to Mary Lane, daughter of John and Tabitha {Stodder} Lane. Ephraim died about 1770 (Wilder, MS). Resided on Main, near Free St. until about 1752 or soon after, when removed to Abington.

(pages 311-329 book on Wilder Genealogy - Hingham MA)

Lydia Wilder was born in Hingham, Plymouth Co, MA on the 24 Nov 1725. Lydia died May 1812 at 86 years of age. She married twice. She married Matthew Tower before 1750. Matthew was born probably before 1728. Matthew was the son of Samuel Tower and Lydia Whiton. Matthew died before 1750. She married Joseph Richards on the 10 May 1750 in Abingon, Plymouth Co, MA. Joseph was born 6 Oct 1701 in Weymouth, Suffolk Co, MA. Joseph died 24 March 1755 in Abingdon, Suffolk Co, MA, at 53 years of age.

The Children of Sarah and Jonathan Tower

of Indiana (Abraham Tower's bothers and sisters)

Of course, we have no photos of Abraham Bates Tower's childhood. This scene might be similar to his early life. Up to the time they became toddlers, little boys wore dresses in those times. The dates and names below for Abraham Bates Tower and his brothers and sisters are from the Tower Genealogy book. There were eleven children though some died within the first few years of life.

Sarah V. (Munroe) Tower died in Alton, Ind., Sept. 4, 1884, at the age of 73 years, 1 month, 25 days.

Background on Abraham Bates Tower's Name

In Oct. 22, 1732, one of the Tower daughters married Abraham Bates of Weymouth, Massachussetts.
(from Tower genealogy. An account of the descendants of John Tower, of Hingham, Mass.")
Looks like the combination of "Abraham Bates" was passed along in the Tower line for a number of generations.

The "Bates" even passed down to my grandparent's generation. My great uncle, Roy McGhee, had Bates as his middle name.
