Abraham of the Bible - Father of Christianity, Judaism and Islam
There is a good reason the Abraham is called "Father of the faith!" Abraham is one of the most exceptional individuals of the Old Testament. The Bible says God actually visited him in his home, spoke to him face-to-face, and even reckoned him as His friend. Abraham loved God; he obeyed him, he served him, and he was even ready to offer in sacrifice his son to confirm that faith. Abraham is our biblical superhero, a father of the faith, the faithful and the righteous, abundantly justifying his place in the Old Testament Hall of Fame.

Abraham
A'braham. (father of a multitude). Abraham was the son of Terah, and founder of the great Hebrew nation. (B.C. 1996-1822). His family, a branch of the descendants of Shem, was settled in Ur of the Chaldees, beyond the Euphrates, where Abraham was born. Terah had two other sons, Nahor and Haran. Haran died before his father in Ur of the Chaldees, leaving a son, Lot; and Terah, taking with him Abram, with Sarai his wife and his grandson Lot, emigrated to Haran in Mesopotamia, where he died.
On the death of his father, Abram, then in the 75th year of his age, with Sarai and Lot, pursued his course to the land of Canaan, whither he was directed by divine command, Gen_12:5, when he received the general promise that he should become the founder of a great nation, and that all the families of the earth should be blessed in him. He passed through the heart of the country by the great highway to Shechem, and pitched his tent beneath the terebinth of Moreh. Gen_12:6. Here he received in vision from Jehovah the further revelation that this was the land which his descendants should inherit. Gen_12:7.

- Call of Abraham: Genesis 12.1
- With a father who worshiped idols and a city dedicated to wickedness, Abraham was not raised in the best of environments. Yet, when God called, Abraham believed God and by faith followed God's instructions. Hebrews 10:8, states that: "By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whether he went."
- Abraham and Sarah:
- Look first at the early seeds of faith. The story began in the city of Ur, a thriving metropolis near the ancient coastline of the Persian Gulf. At least one man was repulsed by the idolatry and sin of Ur, for he had come to know the one true and living God. In fact, God had spoken to him: "Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (Gen. 12:1-3). Armed with that potent promise, Abraham pulled up stakes, and with his father Terah, his nephew Lot, and his wife Sarah, began the long trek northward around the fertile crescent to the city of Haran.
- Abraham and Hagar
- It is difficult to imagine a greater contrast than what is presented in our present chapter from the one reviewed in our last article. In Genesis 15 Abram is seen as the man of faith, in chapter 16 as the man of unbelief. In Genesis 15 he "believed in the Lord," in Genesis 16 he "hearkened to the voice of Sarai." There he walks after the Spirit, here he acts in the energy of the flesh. Sad inconsistency! But One could say, "I do always these things that please Him" (John 8:29).
- Abraham and Ishmael
- Ishmael was the eldest son of Abraham born of Hagar, the Egyptian handmaid of Abraham's wife Sarah. Carefully reading the scriptures, one might say Sarah orchestrated Ishmael's birth. Sarah, knowing she was past childbearing age and sensing her husband's concern because of God's promise that he would be the father of a great nation, persuaded Abraham to take her handmaid Hagar who bore his son Ishmael (Genesis 16). This was fourteen years before Isaac's birth (Genesis 21:5). After being given the Abrahamic covenant, Abraham had Ishmael circumcised (Genesis 17:25), after which the Lord renewed in more detail the promise which he had made to Abraham respecting Ishmael (Genesis 20). So up until this time, it appears that Abraham had considered Ishmael the heir to the promise, and to have felt great affection for him (Genesis 17, 18).

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. Then God said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about" (Genesis 22:1-2)
Abraham is a Father to Jewish and Islam faiths
Abraham and the Jewish and Islam Faiths
Judaism is very much a family faith and the ceremonies start early, when a Jewish boy baby is circumcised at eight days old, following the instructions that God gave to Abraham around 4,000 years ago.
Many Jewish religious customs revolve around the home. One example is the Sabbath meal, when families join together to welcome in the special day.
