British Comedy - Absolutely Fabulous

Ranked #24,828 in Entertainment, #303,212 overall

Or as it's popular known as - Ab Fab

Absolutely Fabulous is a cracking sitcom with role reversals incorparated into great scripts. The jet-setting, bad living Pr agent and single mothe Eddy played by Jenifer Saunders has to be looked after by her strait-laced and disapproving daughter Saffy. Add to this is Eddies long time friend Patsy a chain-smoking, hard-drinking, drug-imbibing, near-nymphomaniac chum of Eddy's since schooldays. played by joanne lumley and vertern comedy star June Whitfield as eddy's senile mother all make for a great plots and very funny situations, normally with eddy falling out of taxis drunk.

Eddy and Patsy had been young firebrands in the heady atmosphere of the late 1960s/early 1970s and here they were 20-plus years later still with the same sensibilities, philosophies and outlook of that period. They had also done remarkably well for themselves in the money-motivated 1980s, Patsy as a fashion magazine editor, Edina with her PR/fashion company. Both women seemed to have virtually unlimited amounts of cash yet rarely found themselves engaged in real work, although Edina often went to her office where she barked orders at her inefficient and mentally bizarre secretary Bubble. At the beginning, Edina was supplementing her income with alimony from two ex-husbands but this cashflow ceased when they tumbled to the fact that they had both been paying her.

More on Absolutely Fabulous

The inverted generation gap theme between mother and daughter was central to the idea, with Saffy cast in the role of the responsible one to her errant mother. Edina's own, faintly senile, mother had much in common with Saffy in outlook, so mostly the two were united in their abhorrence of Edina and Patsy's hedonistic lifestyle.
Patsy and Edina were monstrous creations: selfish, shallow poseurs hell-bent on living life to the excess. They enthusiastically imbibed hard liquor, hashish, cigarettes and cocaine, and generally acted like irresponsible 20-year-olds. Their behaviour was outrageous, their rudeness devastating and their callous and acidic attitude towards good causes and traditional values absolutely shocking. In one stroke the programme dealt a telling blow against the rarefied PC atmosphere. Try watching Absolutely Fabulous it is a great comedy and was very popular on the american cable networks. If you cannot find it on your cable networks why not buy the series on either Amazon or eBay, I am sure you wont regret it as this is another british classic.

Ab Fab was a fantastic series and the chemistry between the actors made their characters really come to life. Another example of why the British have the best sense of humour!
