Toning the Love Handles
You can have the best looking rectus abdominis you want (the six pack), but if you still have those love handles it just doesn't have the same appeal. Their scientific name is the obliques, and most of us either overlook them when we're doing an abs toning routine, or they just seem to never go away. It's usually the latter and might be because of the individual's metabolic rate or just the exercises they are doing. In order to find your obliques after years of being kidnapped by fat, you can do a couple basic exercises. The first is lying on your back and sitting your feet behind your butt. This should make your knees be positioned in the air. Now keep your torso with both shoulder blades touching ground, but lay the knees down to the right or left side. This setup will allow you to lift like you would be working on the six-pack, but you're actually helping the obliques.
If you want to add a little weight into the mix, you can never go wrong with a medicine ball. Get a partner and sit back to back. You will turn and pass the ball to your partner, then they will do the same and pass it back on the other side. This creates a nice motion for the obliques, as well as the other stomach muscles down in there. You can get even more created later on, but this is definitely a great place to start.
Crunches for the Six-pack
You might figure that we're going to tell you to do a bunch of crunches to see the rectus abdominis again. However, the thing about crunches is that they will only be an abs toning workout. See it won't actually get rid of the fat that has been hiding them for so long. This means you have to take the time to do a few aerobic exercises. Maybe just taking a jog after work or riding the bike with the family, but something that will help remove that extra thickness.
The Truth About Abs - 6 Common Myths
The Video Below will show you that doing crunches or other exercises is not the crucial part to get six pack abs.

Working the Transverse Abdominus
All of the information above is great, but if you don't have your transverse abdominus in shape you could end up do all that other work for nothing. Seriously, this is the #1 area you need to focus on, because it's the strength and stability of your body. This area is actually underneath the six-pack area, as well as around the rib cage. So how do you provide the most important abs toning abs workout for this area?
The funny thing is a little breathing technique can go a long way with the transverse abdominus. It allows you to strengthen this area as much as possible, just by taking a deep breath in and then exhaling while sucking in the stomach. There is a little bit more to this, but it's a good starting point to helping protect those organs and build a stronger center.
If you take the time to exercise appropriately for each area you will start to see the abs toning pattern. In the end it's not about how many crunches you do, but what type of abs workout you utilize for each area. Using these options as your initial push will put you on the right path to great looking abdominal muscles.
