Of all the types of prints in art, Abstract art prints are the more interesting because of their use of form, color and line that creates a parallelism to the visual references in the world. This interesting visual language is a composition of various shapes, sizes and lines that expresses itself yet exhibits a degree of independence from what the ordinary eyes may see as art. There were three art movements that mainly contributed to the development of abstract art. These were Romanticism, Impressionism and Expressionism. James McNeill Whistler was known as the artist who gave the early suggestions of this new art when he placed a greater emphasis on the visual sensation rather than the depiction of realistic objects in his painting of Nocturne in Black and Gold: The falling Rocket in 1872.

Today, artistic independence can be seen in the way that abstract art prints are presented. This idea was advanced in the 19th century, when the act of painting outdoors or "en plein air" became very popular in France. While this is the Impressionist era, the presentation of objects from a single vantage point defined by the way the light diffused the colours gave way to "Cubism". This art style is the act of breaking up, analyzing and reassembling in an abstracted form objects that are depicted from one viewpoint. The resulting abstract art print are seen in the surfaces intersecting at seemingly random angles. Colours are modulated in flat areas to become the basis of a new visual art. The removal of a coherence in the sense of depth of the artwork creates a shallow, ambiguous space and allows the viewer to arrive at his own conclusions. Popular artists that used these methods are George Braque and Pablo Picasso.
